This is the second McLaren book I've read, and I have the same issue with both - he has a good idea, he states it clearly at the outset, he spends a chapter or two doing a good job setting it up....and then he just gets lost. In reading both books I had the exact same experience of being really excited, going along with him for the ride for several chapters, and then finding myself just tossing the thing aside, because it got bogged down. So to be fair, I have to say I did not finish this book. I TRIED - mightily. But after really making his point in the first couple of chapters, teasing you that he would develop them further in the remainder of the book, he simply didn't. So I left.

I liked this book a lot. McLaren is very warm to those that would disagree with him, and many of his ideas are very compelling. He makes the case for a new "kind" of Christian identity, which he calls "strong and benevolent" in contrast to the "strong but hostile" style of hardline Conservative Christianity, and the "weak but benevolent" style of the more liberal/unitarian beliefs.I think this book is worth reading regardless of your beliefs or views. McLaren's challenges in this book are very needed in today's world, and I found myself regularly challenged by it. He also really seems to live it out. However, I will say that this book is directed to Christians. The book title might be a little misleading - the book is largely about Christianity, and doesn't spend much more than a chapter talking about the specifics of Islam or Judaism.Personally there are many aspects of Christianity that I hold dearly such as the afterlife, and the problem of suffering apart from human evil, or spiritual formation that are either unaddressed or de-emphasized by McLaren. But no book is complete. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I think it will help me be a better neighbor.

Why do we think that our beliefs are supreme over others' beliefs? And based on those differences, oftentimes, results in the most violent and offensive actions. Beliefs always transfer into decisions and then actions. The kind of God you believe in, whether loving and benevolent, or violent and retributive, determines how you treat "the other".Brian gives a very insightful perspective of our historical decisions that have not always resulted in benevolence but rather conflict and murder. We should walk the road with benevolence toward our fellow Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist to work together to help the poor, the needy, the outcasts, as well as making sound decisions about our use of this beautiful planet, keeping in mind how our decisions and actions might affect individuals' well being across the globe.

"To accept and love God, must I betray my neighbor of another religion? To accept and love my neighbor, must I betray the God of my religion?"The past couple of decades have been exceptional when it comes to religious diversity. Christianity is no longer the cultural norm in America. Incidents across the world have highlighted our many differences. How do Christians respond to Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and so on?Brian McLaren's appropriately titled book Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? attempts to refocus our goals as followers of Christ. From a purely historical and literary perspective, Jesus is a very interesting character. He spends almost his entire ministry with societal outcasts while specifically avoiding the religious authority of the day. Now fast forward over two thousand years, where do we find the followers of Jesus? Are they more concerned about loving people or staying in line with Christian values?McLaren divides this book into four sections. The Crisis of Christian Identity. Identify yourself as a Christian and you will unfortunately be labeled with several negative qualities. Regrettably, most of these perceived qualities have been earned by well-intended but severely misguided Christians. Just like the Pharisees found in the Gospels, Christians today have become more concerned about staying holy and not sinning that we forget to love our brothers and sisters on earth. To be strong Christians, we need humble hearts. To be strong Christians, we need to focus on loving others as an act of loving God. We will definitely receive reprimands from the Christian mainstream but as McLaren reminds us, "Crucifixion happens, not at the hand of others, but Us."The Doctrinal Challenge and The Liturgical Challenge. These two sections were a bit weak in my opinion. I understand McLaren's desire to refocus our doctrines and liturgy so that we focus more on others and the love that God wants us to show. I liked the areas where I felt like he was correcting doctrinal misunderstandings, but I didn't like how he tried to change the entire focus of a tradition or sacrament. See chapter on baptism. I certainly don't disagree with his changes or adjustments, I just don't think the changes are the solution. There was not much tie in to the whole theme of the book. The Missional Challenge. The best way to describe the challenge of being a Christian in a multifaith world can be summed up by Gandhi. One, be like Christ. Two, don't tone done your message. Three, center on love. Four, study non-Christian religions. In conclusion, this is great book on religious diversity and more importantly, loving others. This is the book I think Rob Bell was trying to write when he penned Love Wins. Brian McLaren does a great job writing in simple and straightforward terms. He does not try to throw Greek words at you to prove a theological point. I look forward to reading more from McLaren in the future.

Excellent book for our time when there is so much hatred for people of other faiths. Mr McLaren shows how we can connect with other faiths without diluting our own faith. He shows us how to give compassion to others and to see God at work in other faiths. I have always believed that God shows himself to all in different ways. He does not despise others as they are His children also. Remember the story of Abraham, Sarah and her servant Hagar. Sarah was jealous of Hagar as Ismael was the first born of their family and Isaac the second born. But God did not desert Ismael and Hagar but promised them blessings in the future. We have to look at others and see God in them. This is the way to bring peace to earth by joining together for the good of all.

The regular volumes always seemed to short for me, and if you wanna get them now that they're all at their lowest prices, they still will add up to more than these so called omnibus editions. The only real difference is that you don't get the orginal covers, but if you love One Piece, then you know that it's the story that gets you, not what's on the outside. Still, I figure that the complete sagas will eventually be released, so you have a choice to make, wait for what may come..... or go after what you love, before its too late!

I'll admit, when I first saw a chapter of this manga in Shonen Jump YEARS ago, I hated it. The drawing style was a huge turn off to me, the elongated bodies and morphed shapes when fighting, not to mention the whole blah blah pirates thing blah, were a huge turn off to me. And I knew without a doubt that I would NEVER want to read this stupid series.I am now eating those words. I have Collections 1-6 of the anime and have just bought the 3-in-1 volumes 7-9, 10-12, 13-15. So here I am, hooked on another manga series I swore I'd NEVER like that just so happens to be LONGER THEN BLEACH CURRENTLY! *Sigh*Volume 7 and half of 8 are the end of the getting Sanji story while the second half of 8 and all of 9 are the beginnings of the truth about Nami section. These have great fight scenes, wonderful character development, and some interesting plot developments. This is still early days, though we are seeing the beginnings of twilight on the East Blue section of the One Piece Saga. Luffy is facing two of the toughest foes in the East Blue, which will start to prepare him for future conflicts he will face. The artwork is excellent. For people new to manga, this may not be readily apparent. Make no mistake, this is not Rumiko Takahashi or Tite Kubo, whose styles are more...normal perhaps then Eiichiro Oda's. His style is very distinctive, which is a good thing is the competitive manga market. What I found was that his elongated bodies imply movement to a degree that the still black and while pages seem to come alive in a way that I've not really experienced in other manga. I don't know if that is what the artist is going for but that is what I've experienced.Something else that strikes me about this series is how diverse the information is in it. You have Sanji who waxes eloquently about cooking and uses french terms for his kicks, to Nami who talks about navigational information, to naval practices that are at least partially based on historical information...the list goes on and on. There is so much packed into this manga that there seems to be something for everyone, even someone who just wants an action pack story and doesn't want to look beyond that. For those that do, you'll learn a thing or two.*The Rant*The artwork might be a turn off for some people. The main issue some might have with this was something that shocked me even after watching the anime. This is not a child's manga. There are some rather dark segments of this story; not horrible or scarring for life necessarily but not for all readers. The best example of this is in volume 7 when (view spoiler) This was disturbing even for me as this is quite different from what they have happen the anime. It shows the desperate straits that sailors could find themselves in on the high seas but not everyone should read such things.*Conclusion*If you are interested in manga, the One Piece series is something to consider. In someways a unique series, it has a little bit of everything that makes it fun for many different people to read. It is however, clearly a teen book and should not be read below that level. If you are just now starting to collect, these 3-in-1 books are great ways to catch up as you basically get one of the volumes free based on the cost of three separate volumes versus one of these

great condition

My son loves it!

One Piece: East Blue, Vols. 7-8-9 is another 600-page monster of a collection, the third of 12 so far in the One Piece series. The collection starts off on the Baratie, a floating restaurant, where Don Krieg, commander of the Pirate Armada, has attacked. The first 200 pages or so are a continuation of that battle from the previous volume, including about an 80-page flashback to when the current sous-chef, Sanji, was a boy. Following that, Sanji joins the crew, but Nami, their navigator, has disappeared with all their money. They go in search of her and find out that she betrays people for a living! There's another 80-page flashback about Nami's childhood, but will the betrayer be betrayed, herself?I really wasn't a fan of most of Vol. 7. The battle went on entirely too long, and there was unfortunately too long of a break between me reading One Piece: East Blue, Vols. 4-5-6 and me reading this volume. Simply put, if you liked the first six volumes of One Piece: East Blue, then get to reading this volume right away. For me, the highlights of the book were the two flashback sequences. Oda has a very good style with flashbacks. I also got a couple of belly laughs out of Vol. 8, which was my favorite of the three. ****

Son liked them.
