I am an avid reader, and I read across all genres. I have had a special interest in authentic Native American fiction and nonfiction my whole life because I was born on the Ute Reservation in Northeastern Utah. This book is a compilation of Native American (especially North Dakota Souix) wisdom and tales. It also contains a few excerpts from speeches spoken by a few of the noblest, wisest and best leaders to ever grace this continent. I have read other books by Kent Nerburn, and I can tell you, he is the real thing.
The treatment of the native American through out US history is a damn shame. We've been repeatedly lied to, robbed and murdered . Our culture was crushed and erased. In Texas, countless tribes were forced off our land and counted among the Mexicans. Many of us took on spanish names even though we spoke no spanish. And yet here we are.Our ceremonies today are mixtures of Apache, Karancuha, Comanche and many others. we even celebrate with an Abenaki song. (Abenaki are from New Hampshire area.) So much has happen to the Indian nation. Our elders struggle to teach our young to forgive and to forego revenge and hate. And yet here we are hoping for a better tomorrow. It will come according to Wakan Tanka's time table. So be it.
“The Wisdom of the Native Americans†edited by Kent Newburn This is one of the better, and more readable, books about Native American philosophies. A lot of the material here can be found in other books about Native American ideas but in this book Newburn has organized the excerpts by general subject matter so the reader gets a sense of the overall context that generated the thought(s) that, in turn, generated the ideas expressed. This adds a level of accuracy to the interpretation of passages that many other books simply don't achieve.
The American Indian has always fascinated me and this started in my pre-teens watching the old Western films. These films usually portrayed them as the baddies and the cannon fodder to the upright and `civilised` white `settlers`. As I read more extensively this picture was put on its head. The truth about the genocide and bad faith of the whites truly appalled me. Thankfully, what has endured is the wisdom and spirituality of these amazing people. The lessons one can take from their way of life are numerous. They lived in harmony with nature and only took what they needed. They respected and honoured nature. How different to the so called civilised world where conflict has become a way of life and nature is seen as something that needs to be harnessed and pillaged.
Growing up in the 50s and playing "cowboys and indians" with lots of tv westerns and movies, my view of Native Americans was slanted to say the least. With age, maturity, and reading along the way, I have learned that Indian culture was not primitive. They were not patent savages and the white man, not without more than his share of the blame for the violence in early America. This book is an eye opening look at the beliefs and practices of the American Indians. I highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent, life-changing book. Historically and spiritually rich. Every American should read this for better understanding of our country's history and how American Indian people were affected by the political and religious authorities who were driven by greed.
Excellent overview of Indian wisdom and philosophy mostly in the form of speeches and excerpts from Native American chiefs and leaders. It includes the indispensable "Soul of the Indian" which is a must read. Strenuously recommend this book for students and believers in Christianity as the universality of Indian beliefs is striking especially in its similarity to ancient Hebrew philosophy. As a caution, the Indian philosophy calls into question the very foundation of 'white' society and as such can be unsettling to a thoughtful reader.
My mother bought me this book years ago in an Airport gift shop, of all places. It has been a great comfort to me and given me much strength over the years. I have had three surgeries in the past year, and as I struggle through getting well, I find much of the wisdom and philosophy shared in this book from many tribes fits a situation I am in and helps me through the pain. There are several pieces on women that are inspiring and I have shared them gladly with those who needed that inspiration the most. This book helped me through the rough spots. Those who are Christian may be a bit surprised at what is said about Christianity from an outside viewpoint, and it will give them genuine food for thought. I myself am not Christian. I would recommend it to anyone seeking guidance as although the quotes are not Christian, they are definitely Christ-like in their ideology (sharing with one another, taking care of one another, giving the best so your fellow man can by safe and well). For a different perspective, read and enjoy. The great speeches of Red Jacket, Chief Seattle and Chief Joseph are presented in their entirety. A wonderful book.
