I bought this for my husband - he's loved it and has made several items on the menu. One quirky thing - sometimes a recipe will call specifically for "Bailey's Irish Cream" and other recipes will call for "irish cream". It's a weird editing/sponsorship error that is a little odd. But the recipes turn out great no matter what brand you use. Be aware this is the size of a sheet of paper, it's not really a "card" size.

This is a tri-fold laminated bar guide to help you get started. It has recipes for vodka, gin, cocktails and whiskey recipes. It contains rum recipes, brandy recipes and punch recipes. It is a 6 page guide with measurements and the types of glasses to make drinks in. I think it is a great way to learn how to mix a good drink!

I didn’t read ALL the details of this product, so it may have been specified that this was more than one page. I thought the price was reasonable and I only expected a one-page, laminated, 8.5x10 sheet, but I received a large, laminated, tri-folded, hole-punched ‘pamphlet’ with MANY recipes and other information. I’m pleased.

Absolutely perfect. I got it for the bar at work. It's laminated, sturdy, it has holes punched in it for you (not blocking any of the words) and the font/layout is easy to read.

THE LOW PRICE, HAS ME A LITLE SKIDDISH . I'LL CHECK LATER, AFTER I WRAP IT IN A TOWEL AND PUT IT IN MY TRUCK CATCH ALL BOX. THE OUT OF THE PACKAGE LOOKS AND WORKS PERFECT. SO FAR STEP ONE IS OK! BANGING AROUND IN THE TRUCK SHOULD GIVE IT A FAIR "SHAKED OWN"!?!?? !

Pretty straight-forward and clever design with the drinks divided up by their main ingredient. Comes laminated which makes perfect sense considering the liquid that you'll be working around. I would give it 5 stars but I reserve those ratings for things that are absolutely perfect and this (for as good as it is), is not that. Still a great buy though!

This is one of the best guides to popular cocktails and accessories I have seen. It is listed by the type of liquor, and the laminated pages are well organized and easy to follow. Has three rings if you want to keep it in a binder. Very handy guide to common cocktails. . .

Perfect for quick reference and can offer new shots to the younger generation and they spread like wild fire even though they are much older than they think lol.

Review

"Kristoff again graces his story with hilarious asides, vicious competition, and a protagonist as relentless as she is fearless. Her brutal world is populated with a fascinating array of characters who often meet dismal and bloody fates.... Through tragedy, betrayal, and victory, this glorious adventure thrills and satisfies with cold violence, terrifying monsters, roaring crowds, and bloody honor." ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Sexier, grittier, fiercer, bloodier ― Jay Kristoff’s Godsgrave is an action-packed showstopper. ... Godsgrave thrums with unrelenting tension and suspense and you won’t know what to do with yourself once it’s over." ―USA Today"I feel like I really can't do this book justice with words. But it is in fact bloodier, sexier, stabbier and badassier (just go with it) than Nevernight. Seriously, who knew that was even possible? Questions are answered, many more are asked and we are slowly fed more information about Mia's past." ―The YA Circle blog on Godsgrave"Kristoff has put together an excellent follow-up to Nevernight, and it will not disappoint....Things get more and more intense in just about every area of Mia's life, and it's all leading to a showstopping conclusion in book three. I'll be waiting for it!" ―The Eater of Books blog on Godsgrave"Godsgrave is intense and dark... There’s a lot of dynamic and strong characters especially the women. The last 80 pages will leave you shouting your head off and it’s never info dumped or out of left field.... If you like YA fantasy but want more sex and blood and language, read Nevernight and then quickly follow it with Godsgrave..." ―Bang Bang Books blog on Godsgrave"The Nevernight Chronicle is a fantastic story. Absolutely original work, fantastic interaction between characters, a well developed world and politics. Jay is truly an amazing writer." ―Burkhead's Books and Bad Reviews blog on Godsgrave"All I can say is "Wow!" I'm speechless with wonder, with awe at the twists and turns the story had taken. Though I'm expecting things not to go swimmingly for Mia, I never imagined the routes the plot would take to bring her to where she was by the end of the book." ―The Romance Reviews blog"I rate this book a glowing 5 out of 5 stars! Perfect for fantasy readers who love a badass heroine, assassins, action, and blood!" ―The Introverted Book Nerd blog"Come for the vengeful assassins, stay for the fear-drinking shadowcats. Godsgrave is a stylish, fast-paced and welcome return to the world of Nevernight." ―Peter Newman, award-winning author of The Vagrant"Launching the Nevernight fantasy series, Kristoff (the Lotus War trilogy) creates a splendid world of corruption and violence. Kristoff portrays a world as rife with villains and treachery as the ancient Italian civilizations it echoes. Absorbing in its complexity and bold in its bloodiness, this beginning promises (and delivers) equal shares of beauty and decay."―Publishers Weekly, starred review on Nevernight"A sensuous, shades-of-moral-gray world; a compelling, passionate heroine; a high-stakes quest for revenge―this is a fantasy fans won't be able to put down."―Kirkus Reviews on Nevernight"The world-building is delightfully detailed, its baroque flourishes supplied by sarcastic footnotes, but we are drawn through the narrative by Mia’s triple quest: to rescue her family members, to avenge her father’s death and to survive her education at the church, where the ultimate test is to avoid being killed by the training."―The Daily Mail on Nevernight"Kristoff's new fantasy series is off to a rollicking start."―Booklist on Nevernight"A very entertaining and well thought out story with a very readable main protagonist and her sidekick set at it’s heart.... It’s dark and twisted with a great streak of humour that softens some of the blows. An excellent start to series and one that I’m really looking forward to continuing with." ―The Speculative Herald blog on Nevernight"The innovative setting, fast-moving plot, vivid descriptions, and thrilling action scenes make this a refreshing addition to the steampunk canon." ―Publishers Weekly, starred review on Stormdancer"Soars higher than the arashitora Kristoff writes about; superb." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review on Stormdancer

Godsgrave is a true work of art! For me this does not suffer from the sophomore slump instead it takes everything that made Nevernight brilliant and capitalizes on that to make a worthy and downright fantastic continuation! Godsgrave picks up 8 months after the closing events of Nevernight and we discover Mia has a new destination, the Collegium. One thing I loved about Nevernight was the storytelling and Kristoff keeps it up. The book itself is split into 3 parts and I absolutely love how part 1 tells the story of here we are now but let me also tell you how we got to now, this is told through flashbacks. To me it is never hard to follow the past and present story lines because each one is very unique. I also love how the flashbacks do not overstay their welcome, it has a precise story line and ends.As for the present story and plot, Godsgrave amps up all the action and drama by 100. Kristoff writes some of the best action scenes ever, period. They are gripping, exhilarating, and downright gruesome. Every action scene is vivid and well detailed and that is all thanks to Kristoff's incredible writing style. Now the plot stays it's course from Nevernight, we are still after those that ruined Mia's life, however we now join a Collegium rather then a school for assassin's. Man did I love the Collegium in this book! The new characters were all fleshed out, some likeable some not so likeable. However I do have to tell myself when it comes to Jay Kristoff books I really need to not get so attached to the characters because well you will just have to read the book to find out. The new characters add a fresh new feel to the book to the point that we get to see a more softer side to Mia that we really didn't get to see in the first book, so I appreciated that. Seeing a softer side to Mia really showed some great character development and there definitely was quite a bit of character development throughout this book. We also see some old faces return in Godsgrave which was exciting and bloody shocking (I AM LOOKING AT YOU CLIFFHANGER)! The Collegium is also where we get to see all the action take place. Like I said before these action sequences were epic. They all weren't the same either and what I mean by that is, we didn't have just big blood bath battles. Like a true Colosseum in Rome, their were games, chariot races, and of course blood baths.Last but not least I want to talk about the world a little bit. In Nevernight we only peak at the world of Itreya. In Godgrave we get a whole new perspective of this grand world Kristoff has created for us. We get to see loads more of the city of Godsgrave itself but also we travel to new corners of Itreya. I am hoping this world building and exploration continues in the grand finale of the Nevernight chronicles. All in All Godsgrave was everything I wanted and more and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on the conclusion, hopefully next year. With this book Jay Kristoff has definitely earned the title of auto-buy author in my books and I cannot wait for all the stories Jay has in store for me!!!

I was very excited to read this second installment and it didn't disappoint. Things I liked:- Mia is still this tough as nails assassin who doesn't hesitate to kill but doesn't come off as cold hearted. I do have to say that this book shows Mia being a bit more vulnerable than the first.- I loved the gladiator aspect of the book. I found it completely engaging and enthralling and it definitely had ( and kept) my attention.- I loved all the new characters we were introduced to!Things I didn't like as much:- the footnotes! I've mentioned before (and this is what kept me from giving the first book a 5 star rating) that I hate footnotes in books as it takes you out of the story so completely and doesn't add anything to the plot. I will admit though that this sequel has far far less footnotes than the first book so I really appreciated that.- *SPOILER* I really didn't like how the author used the trope of characters we thought were dead but actually aren't. This actually applies to more than one character in this sequel and I wish it wasn't used because it honestly had me rolling my eyes and thinking 'oh of course this character is still alive how NOT shocking'.Both of these points are still minor things and I have to say I did really love this graphic, explicit addition to the nevernight series.

When I finished "Nevernight," I immediately sent an e-mail to the publisher basically begging them for a copy of "Godsgrave." I think I used the word desperate in my e-mail. I didn't hear anything back and thought I was going to die from need for the second book in the The "Nevernight" Chronicles. Imagine my PURE GLEE when "Godsgrave" was dropped onto my doorstep (aka my desk at work) by an angel (aka the mailman). I couldn't wait to read it. This book took me stinking forever to get through due to life and other similar distracting things, but it was SO VERY WORTH IT.4 Reasons I loved Godsgrave (and why you'll love it to):1. Like "Nevernight," "Godsgrave" follows no rules. Kristoff blends different fantasy worlds, real-life cultures, and sci-fi-like settings to create an entirely unique world. As readers, we have grown to expect certain things of "fantasy" and "sci-fi." Kristoff smashes those boundaries so that, as a reader, you don't know what the hell you're reading (in a good way, I promise). I can't even describe these books to people, because I feel like I have to use so many adjectives. They're truly their own thing. And that, my friends, is pretty damn impressive.2. DAMNIT THESE CHARACTERS ARE SO STINKING GOOD. I'm getting all giddy thinking about how many characters I hated, then loved, hated again, then finally loved. Kristoff takes you on a whirlwind of emotions as you read through these characters interactions, and you don't know who you can and can't trust (sometimes you're even left questioning our main character, Mia).3. The authentic-AF relationship. I won't spoil much about it. But it's FANTASTIC.4. The bad-ass battles!!!!!!! I can't add enough exclamation points to this. There is a massive gladiator-esque tournament going on for the majority of this book, and it's gory, disturbing, heart-wrenching, and AMAZING. I was tense through so much of this book. The bottom line: This book is a raunchy and violent rule-breaker. Don't read this series because you think you know what to expect. Read this book to be uncomfortable, have your heart ripped out of your chest, and jump for joy when you find a new, completely unexpected favorite.

I have been reading fantasy since discovering A Wrinkle in Time at age 12, 50 years of diving deep into new worlds. I find I have very little patience for authors who don’t take time to build language, culture, and a sense of place in their world. Olivia Cole does just that. In addition, her character development is golden. I read as much for character as for plot, and both were very satisfying. After reading only a little while, I started looking around for the characters, as though they were real people. That is the sign that I have become truly immersed in the world. I am delighted to have another author to seek out.

Excellent read with great world-building as well as a beautiful tribute to Octavia Butler. I often wonder at the "YA" label, in that my nearly-40-year-old self enjoys just as much "YA" as I do any other type of fiction. Don't let labels deter or distract you from an excellent read.I hope Ms Cole doesn't keep Part Two from us for too long; leaving us with such a breathless final 20-30 pages as she did, she better be sitting at her laptop polishing a draft as I write this review!

Olivia Cole has produced a science fiction novel that is a very good introduction for her to the YA format. I enjoyed it and could think of four or five people I would recommend it to right away. That is my highest praise. The plot is varied, covering a lot ifinteresting topics, including budding romance and parental approval, imaginative, and compelling. The pacing of the plot is good. The reader sees things gradually unfold at a logical and measured rate that does not become forced.Characters are very well rounded. There are no stock characters that the writer has fallen back on. The main characters are not perfect and also arenotine-sided. The reader connects with them.Ms Cole has created a believable world for her story. There is enough description to engage the reader but does not bog down the pacingFirst person present tense is easy to write in but hard to write well. Ms Cole has done well. She does not force readers to feel artificial or forced emotions through this choice of style and tone. All in all, I think this book is a good addition to my library and I will be loaning my copy out several times. Great job!

One of the elements that pulled me into A Conspiracy of Stars is Octavia's voice. She's smart and perceptive, yes, but also impatient and reckless. In other words, she's a teenager. It's difficult to write teenagers so deftly, but Olivia Cole has that gift, that perfect ear. A Conspiracy of Stars is more than a sci-fi thriller; it's also a coming-of-age, pro-science story with uncomfortable but necessary parallels to America's racist past and present. Ms. Cole doesn't shy away from the explorers' depiction of indigenous people as the dangerous, unpredictable 'other' in order to rationalize the exploitation of the planet's resources. She refuses to preach, instead letting Octavia's realizations unfold with all of the emotion and pain a young person experiences when the world she thought she knows comes into sharp, clear focus. Octavia is an extraordinary heroine for the ages.

This story takes you to a completely different place, yet has you searching things within yourself. The main character Octavia's explorations bring the inner adventurer out of you, in all senses. The thick themes within this book are crucial during this time.I am not a traditional Sci-Fi reader but Olivia A. Cole makes Sci-Fi accessible. She helps us see how close Sci-Fi is to our reality. This book will keep you engaged, fill your Sci-Fi needs, and leave you feeling more fulfilled.

A well written, well-paced book with a main character who engages me from the first...That's true, but cliche. I find it difficult to write reviews, but I can show you the tweet I sent to the author:"I just finished A Conspiracy of Stars. I feel breathless and energised. I'm not exaggerating. Thank you for writing it...I loved the ride!"A book that gets that kind of emotional AND physical reaction from me gets all the stars.

I loved this book! Right from the first page I quickly began to appreciate the rich world of Faloiv that this author created so vividly. I enjoyed the full development of the beautifully diverse characters; I felt as though I was sharing every experience right alongside of Octavia the heroine and her friends Alma and Rondo. The creatures on the world of Faloiv are written with such imagination and unique design that I could easily envision them on a big screen! The parallels to many of today's challenges in our own world are compelling and thought provoking. The villains in Octavia's life display an astonishing lack of empathy and compassion for other people and creatures on their world of Faloiv. In their quest to return to the days (planet) of earlier times they choose to disregard nature, science and new truths all in the name of self-interest.This book flows easily and the suspenseful and enthralling plot makes it a real page turner. I hope the sequel is right on the heels of this great read because it is a cliffhanger of the best kind!

The book is written in gorgeous prose and the world-building is intricate, to say the least. However, the pacing was simply too slow for my tastes. All of the action happened in the last 10% of the novel. Prior to that, the protagonist, Octavia, spends the entire novel stumbling upon conclusions that the reader figured out right away. I would have rather spent that time watching Octavia develop her abilities, build relationships with creatures, test her strength, etc.Ultimately, I enjoyed the premise but got a bit bogged down in the execution.

GRADE: A-4.5 StarsCaitlin's best friend Ingrid commits suicide, leaving her journal beneath Caitlin's bed. HOLD STILL is the story of the first year of Caitlin's grief, as she comes to terms with the Ingrid she knew and the Ingrid who kept herself hidden. In that year, broken into seasons, Caitlin will find a new friend, discover two talents and get her first boyfriend.Losing a friend as a teenager is difficult under any circumstances. For many, it's a first experience with loss, mortality and a reminder that we aren't guaranteed futures. Suicide compounds the grief process with questions of guilt--Could I have done something to prevent this.Nina LaCour brilliantly shows Caitlin's grief process, from sadness, numbness, anger, confusion and a myriad of other emotions by giving her an authentic voice. Caitlin is a complex character, not always friendly or kind. She doesn't always make the best decisions, particularly in the months after the suicide. I love LaCour's writing style as well as we storytelling skill. My only criticism is I wish LaCour had ventured into anger at Ingrid, which would have been even more realistic. Anger at the deceased is a common emotion for those left behind in the wake of suicide.HOLD STILL is an important book for those grieving from suicide or any death, as well as a story of hope in the far of sadness.

Honestly, I don't regret reading this book. There were a handful of times that I was thinking to myself "wtf", as well as a couple loose ends (I won't say to not spoil the story), but other than that it was enjoyable and touching. As someone who has been suicidal most of their life, it definitely made me step back and think about the effects that I have on others, especially my best friends. As horrible as it sounds, the thought was placed into my head that if I had killed myself, my best friend would probably be in the same position as Caitlin. I'm planning on reading Nina LaCour's other works as well, her writing in this book really flows together and even though the subject matter is tough, this book really is a page turner.

Caitlin is working through the grief of losing her best friend Ingrid to suicide. She finds Ingrid's journal hidden beneath her bed. She is surprised, anxious, afraid, mostly clinging to the idea that she has one more way of holding onto Ingrid's memory within the journal's pages. So she reads it slowly, savoring every entry.High school is hard. Teenaged years are very difficult. Without difficulties in our teenaged years, we wouldn't have the strength to get through the rest of our lives- adulthood and everything that comes with it.Hold Still is beautiful. I couldn't get enough of it. It isn't just about suicide. It's about overcoming grief, moving forward, holding onto moments and memories while still forging through a life of complete unknowns.Every character is alive, except Henry. I loved Taylor, Caitlin's crush, and identified with Caitlin's character, Dylan the new girl at school, as well as her Art teacher Ms Delani. There is so much human passion within each character that I don't think I could choose a favorite. Everyone seems real. Like I've passed them on the streets or have ordered a coffee from them at some point in my life.Like this? Try Catch by Will Leitch, Okay by Katherine Marple, and Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers

I enjoyed Hold Still, but it isn't a book I'd recommend to all my friends. It's like so many other books about losing a friend and finding something they left behind. It was a very fast read, but also a heavy subject. It is by no means a book to read sitting on the beach trying to relax (as I did).I would recommend this book to someone who is struggling with losing someone they love--by death or even just by physical or emotional distance. The protagonist struggles with understanding who she is without her best friend and ultimately comes to the realization that she does have other connections in the world and can be a part of that world without her deceased friend.

On Philosophical Style (Key Texts), by Brand Blanshard

Review

"In these few pages, Professor Blanshard has said the last word on style in philosophy. The reader is expertly conducted on a tour of inspection of all relevant areas, in and out of philosophy proper." (Virgil C. Aldrich, The Journal of Philosophy) "Everything he says may be said about writing in general, and that some philosophers - or at least one - can write clearly, rhythmically, and profoundly is proven by the author himself." (John J. Kessler, The Humanist) "Notable as probably the first book specifically on this subject by a distinguished philosopher." -- Bibliographie de la Philosophie

Brand Blanshard (1892 --1987) was an American philosopher who taught at Yale for many years. During his lifetime, Blanshard was out of the philosophical mainstream and remains so. He was a rationalist with a commitment to the Absolute and to speculative metaphysics in a distinctly analytic, naturalistic age. I don't think Blanshard has received the attention he deserves. With several lengthy philosophical works to his credit, Blanshard's most famous book is this 68 page booklet "On Philosophical Style" which originated as a lecture he gave in 1953 at Manchester University. A pleasure to read, "On Philosophical Style argues that philosophical writing does not have to be obscure or turgid to have depth and meaning. In the "Tractatus", Wittgenstein said that "whatever can be said, can be said clearly". Blanshard was not a follower of either the early or the late Wittgenstein, but this insight from early Wittgenstein might, in its own way, be a motto for Blanshard's book. The book offers examples of jargon-filled, almost unreadable philosophical prose from usual suspects such as Kant and Hegel and from others. Although not offering any easy formulas for good writing, Blanshard praises short, direct sentences, use of the specific term more than the general, a limited use of subordinate qualifiers, simple English, and a rhythmical prose that might be read aloud. The book offers many insights and turns of phrase in its own right, with astute comments about Nietzsche, Santayana, and Berkeley, among others.Although the book is about style in philosophical writing, Blanshard has a deeper purpose. In discussing the style appropriate to philosophy, as opposed, say, to a novel, Blanshard offers thoughts on what philosophy is. Blanshard says that philosophy "belongs to the literature of knowledge" but people demand of it "the literature of power". He describes philosophy as an intellectual enterprise which examines fundamental concepts and assumptions in an attempt to reach the truth. Philosophy shares some characteristics with the sciences but differs from them in the breadth of its concerns and in the importance of its questions to human life and value. Thus, unlike work in chemistry or particle physics, the non-specialist has an interest in the investigations of philosophers and a right to demand clarity in what passes for philosophy.Blanshard's discussion mirrors his own rationalistic conception of philosophy and might not be accepted by most philosophers. Some philosophers would deny that philosophy tells us facts about nature on grounds that this work is exclusively within the province of the sciences. Similarly, some philosophers might challenge Blanshard's belief in the alleged impersonal, rational character of the philosophical search or his claim that it discovers the truth. Those holding to a different understanding of philosophy might have in part a different conception of good philosophical writing. Still, there is much for philosophers and students of all persuasions to learn from this book. I have sympathy with Blanshard's understanding of philosophy. The book is full of allusions to many writers, philosophers and non-philosophers together with many sharp observations that are easy to pass over in the context of reading about philosophical style. For example, Blanshard advises the philosopher to be aware in his writing that he may be criticizing the deeply-held feelings of some readers: Blanshard writes, for example: "Even if he thinks that religion and morals are the political progeny that flattery begets upon pride, he will know that this is hardly the most persuasive way of putting his case."In the last pages of the work, Blanshard considers the relationship between style and substance in philosophy. Some would emphasize style while others would find it of little importance. Blanshard finds a strong connection between thought and feeling and expression in writing that philosophers, and others who write, must work at improving with time. More importantly, he argues that their is a relationship between philosophical style on one had, and having a proper mind and being a good person on the other hand. Blanshard writes:"The more perfectly one's style fits the inner man and reveals its strength and defect, the clearer it becomes that the problem of style is not a problem of words and sentences merely, but of being the right kind of mind. .... [I]t show also that the problem we have been discussing is no petty or merely technical one, but very far-reaching indeed. We may have to agree with Professor Raleigh that 'to write perfect prose is neither more nor less difficult than to lead a perfect life.'"This is an excellent, rewarding book for readers interested in philosophy or writing. It makes me want to explore in greater detail Blanshard's longer philosophical books.Robin Friedman

Brand Blanshard's prose style was itself a seamless implementation of the content of his philosophy: intelligible, clear, precise, and invariably suffused by what he called the "rational temper." In this book (really an extended essay) he offers helpful advice to would-be writers of philosophical prose -- advice that he had more than earned the right to give. This single volume, if its advice were heeded, would have spared us the dark cogitations of many an obfuscatory philosopher and left the field of philosophy in the hands of those who had something to say. Those who are impressed by the bold pronouncements of Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein will find little solace here, but anyone who expects philosophers actually to love wisdom will be delighted to encounter a kindred spirit. Read it not only to profit from its advice on prose style but also to absorb something of the spirit of twentieth century philosophy's greatest exemplar of reasonableness.

Blanshard's text is an enjoyable read and strangely hilarious with such gems as "A philosopher who is precious, mannered, or self-conscious is a bore, either in person or on paper." His peculiar need for every sentence to be accessible to Blanshard's standards leads him to side with Reichenbach's critique of Hegel's prose as being misleading because Hegel, of all things, does not use the term "reason" as it is "generally used." I would think it might be the end of philosophy if philosophers only used terms as they had been used before. Oh, sorry, Plato, but we don't use eidos that way. But all of this frumpy analytic harrumphing over philosophy is itself part of the curious charm of this book. It is like watching a eloquent old eccentric man chastise the youth of today. Now, could we imagine previous greats in philosophy as achieving even greater heights if they had bothered cleaning up their prose? Or is the density of the material part of its message? Blanshard believes that because there are eloquent philosophers, it cannot be the case that obscurity is required for good philosophy. "Berkeley proved against all the Heideggers of the world that philosophy can be written clearly, against all the Hegels that it can be written simply, against all the Kants that it can be written with grace." Suffering through Hegel or Kant seems a rite of passage, but I do have to agree with Blanshard after suffering through some impenetrable contemporary philosophy articles the other day that a little grace would be welcome.

Blanshard, an eminent American philosopher and a master of philosophic prose, offers sage advice to budding writers in this little book. Blanshard is a charming and gracious guide who reminds his readers that consideration for others is vital in writing as in life. Do read this book. You'll be glad you made the author's acquaintance.

Brand Blanshard was one of the great philosophers of the 20th century, now badly neglected. His "On Philosophical Style" is a gem about how to write well, namely, how to think well. I used it for many years in philosophy courses.
