Review

Named one of Amazon’s best graphic novels of 2018!"Continuing on where My Lesbian Experience left off, this new installment follows the author-artist through a new chapter in her life as she exposes herself through words and pictures to those closest to her. Awkward and wholly authentic, it is visually stunning, translating the nuance of emotion into heartbreaking graphics that tackle tough subject matter such as anxiety, substance use, self-esteem, female sexuality, and coming out all set against the backdrop of long standing societal and familial pressures." – Teen Vogue"...fans will be eager to check in on Kabi and cheer for her floundering movements toward happiness." – Publishers Weekly"She may not realize it, but manga author Nagata Kabi is a voice for this generation." – Boston Bastard Brigade"I will not type that this genre of visually exaggerated autobiographical comic is new, but instead that I haven't seen it expressed this way before. The scale is a single family and Ms. Kabi uses that claustrophobic scale to show how devastating the disapproval of the family unit can be." – The Matador Review"...readers who devoured My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness need to pick up this volume, if for no other reason than to know that happiness is a never-ending battle for many, but there are always reasons to keep putting up the good fight." – Anime News Network

If you want a emotional punch in the gut, Nagata Kabi's work is for you. She rarely pulls punches or hesitates to catalogue her life in all its nitty gritty detail. It is honest, raw and far more real than most autobio comics get. If you've ever dealt with depression, struggled to prove your worth to your peers or parents, or feel whole this comic is very much something you should read. It doesn't have a 'narratively' satisfying ending (given its auto-bio comic, thats not surprising) but it makes you think about your own life. Seeing Nagata Kabi struggle makes you think about your own struggles and getting that ball rolling is usually more than enough to change aspects of your life. Her artwork has improved by leaps and bounds since her first book, you can see and feel the confidence in her linework without it losing that loose almost sketchy artwork that drew me in originally. She has a strong grasp on details without it ever dragging down her sense of movement or the mood she wants to convey. She experiments with depicting her emotional state more with images/visual short hand than plainly telling us this time, which works fantastically. I still find myself going back to the pages where her parents find out about her first book and linger on how she handled it.I'd highly recommend this book to anyone struggling to make a life for themselves and wanting to find solace with someone else who understands.

My Solo Exchange Diary continues to follow the life of Nagata Kabi after the success of her first manga. In this addition, she struggles with discovering her self-esteem outside of seeking her parents approval, ventures out to live on her own and finally gain her independence. Although, it seems that she can never truly escape the judgements of her parents.Likes:- As someone who recently moved out of her parents' house to gain her own independent, my heart went out to the author as she struggled to find her strength to distance herself from her parents.- Nagata equates developing one's own measuring stick of self with a developed self -esteem. Those that tend to measure themselves against the accomplishment of others tend to be the ones still building their own self esteem .- The novel hits on many common issues that many individuals are experiencing daily: depression, loneliness and how to cope with the harsh, judgmental views of others. I love that the novel is completely relatable, offering an alternate point of view to many issues that I myself have dealt with as I grow up.Dislikes:- I don't understand the motivation of Nagata's parents to judge and ridicule their daughter. How can a parent not see how that contributes to poor self-esteem and self - doubt? It's no wonder that Nagata was so worried about her parents coming across the material as it seems like they've never had anything positive to say.- I don't feel like Nagata had to internalize her dismissal of the woman interested in her. Not being interested in someone that likes or wants you isn't a sign of some deeper issue. It's just a note that you two aren't meant to become anything more than friends. Hang in there Nagata! You will find someone to hold you.

If you like her previous work, My lesbian experience with loniness, you will love this. As it tackle her depression while also showing progress in her life. With moving out, learning to be happy and even dating. It is a book that personally connected with me and I cannot reccomend enough. Is a great slife of life of someone dealing with depression and her reflecting her life and how to improve it as she ask the question of what makes someone independent, happy and being in a healthy relationship.

I wasn't sure what to expect when a sequel was announced, but I was certain that I wanted more. This book delves deeper into Kabi's mental health than I ever thought possible, making for a difficult (but incredibly satisfying) read. She dishes out brutal honesty as well as mindful tips for coping with one's mental/physical anguish. I'm always awestruck by Kabi's soft rounded and playful artstyle. It really complements, the grave tone of the book and always has me gawking at the page.

Not quite as good as the first one, but still worth reading.I feel Kabi was struggling to find content to put into this one.

Fantastic follow up to Lesbian Experience With Loneliness! The worst thing I can say about it is how long it takes them to be translated - it's a bit sad getting to care about someone's life and wellbeing so much when you're on a 2 year delay. The best thing I can say, though, is that Nagata's works should be mandatory for anyone who wants to better understand mental illness and responsibility to yourself and others.

A worthy sequel to My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. This follows the authors life just as that prior volume is being published and what it means for her relationship with her family. You just can't help but root for her!

No matter how you feel about the author, there's no denying that this is a story of complete brutal honesty and emotion that hooks you in from beginning to end. As someone who suffers with anxiety and who has suffered from depression in the past, I completely relate to everything she feels -- even things I would probably never admit outloud or even to myself. The story is in a diary format, covering day to day experiences and changes going on in her life. There are some times where it's a little hard to follow given the lack of concrete dates for when things are happening, but that also helps in that you aren't thinking too hard about how much time has passed. The art is also consistently great, with the sketchy style and occasional switch from color to black and white really helping you to get a feel for the mood the artist is going for.I can't wait for volume 2!

I was super stoked to get and read this book as I have been following Josh on social media and occasionally on his Bravo TV show. The book was OK and not "awe-inspiring" or any fancy adjective that a lot of the five star reviews have suggested. That leads me to believe a lot of the top ratings are fake. :( and I noticed a lot of the 5 star ratings were posted within a couple days of the book coming out.The book itself was OK. Some parts were really entertaining but I didn't get a lot out of it, other than Josh loves his fiancée and has an uber successful real estate business. There were some motivational quotes sprinkled throughout but I definitely think this book could have been condensed down into a short YouTube video, or blog post.

I felt as if who Josh is on the show is how he is in the book. Very egotistical. Some of the topics (trying shrooms) I did not find necessary to talk about in a book about real estate. Some parts, the parts not about him, I enjoyed reading and got great advice for my real estate business.Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Good stuff. I enjoyed it for the positive spirit and honesty. Josh may come off as egotistical, but he also strikes me as well grounded, for which I credit his family.I think it's easy to discount what Josh and the other realtors on the TV show do, and to write it off as the product of a lucky break in getting on the show in the first place. But no way these guys would last on the show if they didn't possess some real talent.Enjoyed hearing Josh's account of heading into the original interview to get on the show. He was scared, but determined to get in there and fight. To me, this sums it all up. This took guts. He seems to have the right approach to life in general and is able to capitalize on his many good breaks. To me, this is what makes the book inspiring.Recommended reading.

As a fan of the show, I have admire and like the way all these agents in one of the most challenging markets operate, and I have identified with Josh Almant the most and wanted to pick his brain. Well in this book Josh has been able to provide his views in Real Estate, his tactics, his business model in a story telling type of way to give great examples of his successes as well as his failures, because you learn from both. Great book easy to read, amazing content!

Josh has alot of good points in this book but uses unnecessary examples to get his point across. Also felt like this book was definitely targeted to Men. He uses a lot of examples about women and things of that nature that sometimes seem inappropriate. If you take those things out. It's actually a decent book. But his ego does come through alot in this book.

Not that inspiring...........

The informal Josh imparts is incredible. The book is well written, and full of great Josh'-isms that are practical and usable in all business, not just real estate. Mr. Altman is articulate, funny, and down to earth.I look forward to her release of his next book in April.

So sure all these 5 stars reviews are fake! Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Review

"This is War and Peace without the peace and the love interest, and therefore a fraction of the length. But it was Tolstoy's major source: the History of Napoleon and the Grande Armée in 1812, the diaries of Bonaparte's aide de camp, Philippe-Paul, Comte de Ségur, was first published in 1824. Defeat is a reissue of the 1958 translation by the late David Townsend, with an introduction by the journalist and historian Mark Danner...His account of the march on Moscow is a work of reflection and justification as well as narrative, but it still conveys the horror." --London Times“Count de Ségur’s famed diary of Napoleon’s Russian campaign is not just another book about Bonaparte; it is the main source of a thousand schoolbooks, cartoons, legends, sermons and second thoughts for would-be conquerors…Ségur wonderfully evokes the opening scenes of the disastrous war…[he] was a war chronicler ranking with Herodotus and Bernal Díaz.” –Time magazine“The influence of the work now made available in a new translation, was felt for many years. The giants of literature used it as a source book and as an inspiration…It is still the most vivid account of that apocalyptic disaster…it’s appeal is eternal.” –The New York Times (June 22, 1958)“The book is valuable…a most entertaining and interesting work.” –The New York Times (June 5th, 1895)“Ségur served throughout the Napoleonic era as an aide-de-camp to the Emperor, becoming a brigadier on the eve of the Russian campaign. His memoirs remain the classic account of the destruction of the Grand Army.” –Parameters, The US Army War College QuarterlyMilitary History Appeal: “One of the most celebrated debacles in all military history, it is the subject of a brilliant eye-witness account…extremely well written…Filled with exact observation and filled also with the grief and horror Ségur had personally experienced, it is one of the enduring classics of war memoirs. Its narrative of battles and routs, starvation and panic, is outstanding. It’s close-up view of Napoleon vacillating and apprehensive, blundering into defeat, is fascinating.” –The New York Times (July 25, 1958)

About the Author

Philippe-Paul de Ségur (1780–1873), the scion of an old French aristocratic family, was the son of Louis-Philippe de Ségur, a diplomat and historian who welcomed the Revolution and aligned himself with Napoleon. Sharing his his father’s sympathies, the young Ségur enlisted in the French cavalry in 1800 and quickly rose to became a member of Napoleon’s personal staff. Ségur distinguished himself repeatedly in battle and supported the Emperor until the final defeat at Waterloo. His History of Napoleon and the Grande Armée in the Year 1812 was published in two volumes in 1824, and the book, a great success which sold out ten editions in three years, was widely translated. Effectively retired from the army during the Restoration, Ségur was promoted to lieutenant general and received a peerage after the establishment of the July Monarchy in 1830. He was enrolled in the French Academy in 1830 and received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1847. I've heard of authors appearing in court to defend their literary art, but Count Philippe-Paul de Segur risked his life twice: first, during the deadly Russian Campaign itself when, as personal aide to Napoleon, he wrote down his observations while men dropped dead all around him; then, the second time, after the resulting memoir was published in 1824, an intimate friend of Napoleon thought Segur was too critical of the fallen emperor and challenged him to a duel, during which the author was wounded. While Segur had been loyal to Napoleon right up to Waterloo, apparently for some readers, he should not have acknowledged the good qualities of the Russians, nor should he have drawn such a detailed portrait of Napoleon under pressure. While you can read for yourself how the French emperor and his most brilliant Marshals and officers were drawn deep into Russia, then defeated by the winter and harried out of the vast country by an steady flow of Russian troops and resources, there are three things that stand out to me. First of all, Segur was familiar with the craft of writing, how to take the facts and shape them concisely for a purpose. He knew how to use the actual battle scenes, the entry into Moscow, and Napoleon's temperament to develop his plot, to turn each scene lyrically. Obviously, Segur began his memoir with the end in mind, namely, to illustrate one of history's greatest lessons about one nation attacking another. People loved Napoleon, but Segur concludes, ". . . this great man in those great circumstances was unable to subdue nature . . . . certain mistakes were made, which were punished by abysmal suffering," Segur continues. "On this ocean of disaster, I have erected a melancholy beacon with a lurid beam; and if my weak hand has not been equal to the painful task, I have at least attempted to give this warning, that those who came after us may see the peril and avoid it" (289). Segur wrote with a coherent, carefully gauged purpose which he sustained throughout, thereby, making this military memoir a classic.Secondly, Segur shows why men were willing to follow Napoleon to the ends of the earth. I won't go into detail, but the Emperor must have had a seductive personality, charming manners, and a cult of celebrity built around him. Throughout the book, Segur shows us Napoleon's fine qualities as a person--yes, he had them--and many wise sayings were attributed to him. After riding through the Borodino battlefield littered with corpses, a dying soldier groaned; someone said that it is only a Russian, to which Napoleon replied, "There are no enemies after a victory, but only men!" (81).Thirdly, Segur acknowledges the fine qualities of the Russians. Previously, the French had defeated the them in Western Europe in 1805 and again in 1807, but on their own soil, in 1812, they did not crush the French when they could have--they let the winter do its horrible work. I've never heard ice on a river described to feel so cold in the reading, nor have I heard what it looks like when men living or dead slip beneath the ice to freeze in the grip of the frigid water. But--winter or not--in other scenes, the Russian troops often seemed to hold back. At one point, Segur claims that once the commanding officers noticed that the weather was defeating the French, they refrained from attacking. "Comrades, we must do them justice," Segur writes of the Russian enemy after Moscow. In burning their own capital, "Their sacrifice was complete, without reservation or tardy regrets; and since that time they have never made any demands on us, even in our capital [Paris], which they left unharmed" (118). Yes, two years later, in 1814, the Russians occupied Paris (with other nations) but did not take the revenge they could have. "Their reputation has remained high and spotless," Segur concluded. Of course, he was French and he believed the Russians as a whole had not developed culturally. This astonishing account of the disintegration of an army of over half a-million men, mostly French, but from anyone willing to follow the charismatic Napoleon, is a must read for background on 19th-century literature. Of course, Tolstoy's War and Peace comes to mind, but so does Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma. The Pierre-Antoine Daru mentioned frequently as Napoleon's Minister of War was an older cousin of the writer-to-be (who was merely Henri Beyle then). Daru was a close relation of Beyle's mother and got Beyle/Stendhal his first serious government career-track job, which alas would have been fatal if the 29-year-old Beyle hadn't learned some survival skills. After I finished Segur's account, I read Beyle/Stendhal's letters which he managed to send out to friends and family during the retreat from Moscow; Beyle claims he managed to keep his sang-froid during the disaster--once you're far into the mess there's no point in whining--but lost his carriage, money, journals, everything but the clothes he wore. How one survives such military disasters is a mystery to me, but the fact that certain men still order others into battle is--if not hubris--an insane pursuit after empire.

Written by a member of Napoleon's staff , Defeat is one of the most compelling books I've read in a long time. The Grand Armee advances through Russia all the way to Moscow and occupies the city as it is being abandoned and burned by the Russians themselves. The Czar decides to destroy his own capital to avoid Russian peasants joining the French. Then the Russian winter sets in as Napoleon begins the slow dreadful retreat. The retreat and withdrawal prove disastrous on a scale that almost defies belief. Yet De Segur witnessed and records every grim detail in this remarkable book written a few years later. The translation is excellent and the book flows like a novel. For anyone in interested in military history and the Napoleonic wars this is indispensable.

The narrative about the defeat and routing of Napoleon's Grand Army is graceful and detailed. Segur's understanding of Napoleon's fears, anxieties, superstitions, his temerity yet hesitant, erratic decisions facing well-concealed doubts is an extraordinary personal history of a man fate has abandonned amidst bad judgments and declining competence. Nappy is a fallen hero here, someone we can scarcely reconcile with his glorious cinnamon-colored marble tomb in Invalides in Paris. While the reader follows the movement of troops on opposing sides, overwhelming these manoeuvres is the accursed winter ice and snow and minus temperatures devastating the strongest as the wounded and setting the stage as the true enemy of every living soul in Russia. Yearning to return to France and its benign climate was the companiable hope of every French soldier awake or asleep, a vision that disolved in a petrifying glacial death at the hands of nature. This Russian campaign stands alongside monumental invsions of classical times.

Excellent short book from an eye witness participant. Many details were new to me even though I thought I knew a lot about Napoleon's invasion of Russia.Every child should be taught that invading Russia during the winter on foot, with only summer clothes, not enough food and having a confused idea of your goals, is as bad an idea as starting a land war in Asia.

Very easy read.
