If you are taking a remedies course, these should be added to your studying. Fletcher makes the topic easy to understand and is a must have for law school essay writing.

"Willie Fletcher," as he introduces himself explains the subject clearly, has good examples, and speaks in a voice that makes it sound like he's in your living room, just having a friendly chat. The overall result makes for a great review to listen to while commuting and studying for a Remedies course or the bar exam.

I used this product for my Remedies course. Found it useful especially as a good overview of Remedies. Worth your time as a supplement.

Remedies is a great course as taught by this professor. The sound quality on these CDs is much better than others I own.

The content is good, but the CDs are not indexed; they are just a single hour and three minute track.

I transcribed this lecture nearly word for word & use it to study with. Professor Fletcher is easy to listen to & gives excellent tips and mneumonics (sp?) to help you figure out how to take apart and analyze a remedies hypo step-by-step. I quit buying the Sum & Substance lectures & go with the Gilbert series now. They're great lectures by great professors.

I found these lectures excellent. Conviser has a really good voice, a way of speaking that keeps you awake, a sense of humor, and really guides you along the rails to preparation for the Bar exam.

I loved this book; Louis L'Amour was an extraordinary man, not because he could tell a good story, though he certainly could do that, but because he had a great thirst for knowledge and he spent his entire life on a quest to educate himself. His education came not from school, but from his life experiences and books. Wherever life took him, and he traveled all over the world as a seaman, he listened to the local people, he sought out their stories, and he sought out books, books that would tell him of people, of places, and of history. In this book he talks of that education and he tells of the many hundreds of books he read. He did not read because he had a school assignment he had to meet, he read because he had an inexhaustible desire for knowledge and understanding; he read for depth and breadth of understanding. This is the third book I've read this year where the author spent many years developing his education through a reading agenda outside of a traditional university course of study leading to a degree. The others are Nassim Nicholas Taleb, his book is Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, and Oliver DeMille, his books are A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century, and The Coming Aristocracy. Each of these authors embarked on a course of study much broader and deeper than would ever be provided by a university course of study. I wish I had done this many years ago; I'm doing it now. These authors are seeking an education not job skills, and wisdom not credentialed favoritism. They promote becoming informed and developing the courage to act rather than complacency.

Lots of little nuggets of joy in here. I didn't know much about Louis L'Amour before reading this, afterwards, I don't know how much I know but I liked what I saw. I was a book addict but L'Amour puts me to shame. Like me growing up, he had a book in his pocket constantly and read whenever he stood still for two minuetes. Unlike me, he left home, had adventures, saw the world while doing it.That's the other fascinating thing about this book: it opens a window to a world that's gone for good. L'Amour actually met some of the men who tamed the West, he listened to him, absorbed their stories, saw the land. This book, and all his books, are a link to those times. I'm way to fond of my comfort to even try what he did, to live by my wits and from the strength of my back. But he did, he really lived his life. There isn't a lot about his private life, his loves, his emotional development. He just suddenly is married and has kids with no mention of the woman or how they met. There a number of strange voids here, but this one stands out considering how much a woman can teach a wandering man or a non-wandering one. But then, there's a midwestern prudishness that seems to be a part of his core, which is fine. Not everyone is a libertine or even wants to be one.A major part of the book is a discussion of what he read and what he thought about it. Trivia, sure, but interesting. It's not a bad booklist for any self-educated person. Got me interested in Livy, which I've added to my Kindle library (Technology is cool).Lots of little tidbits I enjoyed, like how to fight four men at once...something that came up in his early life more than once, it seems. Or what it's like to survey a mine or why you have to shoot rabbits or starve if you live off the contents of your garden. The details stand out, like little scenes that are self-contained and isloated. One thing, though the book is worth a read, it was published posthumously and with minimal edits, I suspect. So there are repeated phrases and thoughts and oftentimes there will be tangents that don't seem to serve any purpose. If the man had lived to revise and publish it himself, I'm sure it would come out differently.

I will say, honestly, that I am not familiar with this writer or the other books he's written. Amazon suggested this book and the reviews seemed promising. I must say that I really didn't care for the book. It had a few paragraphs worth highlighting and I did like the general premiss. It was inspiring to hear of a man's life, which was spent adrift in the world, traveling here and there. It gave inspiration to me to read much more than I do and really opened my mind to the importance of the written word, not just for education, but to tell the story of "us" and our lives and history. He made a point that touched deeply for me. My parents just passed away and in going through their stuff we unearthed some pictures of my great great great grandparents and even some land deeds from further back to the 1830's, to the first generation of my family that came to the united states. I found this material so interesting, but there is nothing of substance to tell me what these relatives were like or what their struggles were. Louis L'Amour touched on how important the written word is to us and our story and I can't agree more. My biggest criticism of this book is that the story of his life seem to be in random, rambling order and throughout the book there are paragraphs of what he read at the time. It gets a little old after a while...i mean we get it, you read everything, twice. So, as I said, it's a so-so book in my opinion but that's just me.

Bubba is awesome. Do not doubt Bubba. If Bubba comes to your town, buy him a lot of beer and direct him to your local strip club.Word of warning: this is a collection of previously collected short stories, so if you're a faithful reader of Bubba's adventures, you may already own most of what's included. Even so, it's worth it to have them all in one book. The allure of Bubba is...oddly complex for such a simple man. It's refreshing to meet a main character who just...is what he is. There was no single amazingly traumatic event in his past that formed him into a monster hunter. It's just the family business and he grew up doing it. If his family had owned a garage, Bubba would be a mechanic. And he's the best sort of good ol' boy. In today's society, we're conditioned to consider rednecks and hillbillies as backwards, ignorant, racist, sexist, and virtually every other negative -ist out there. The average redneck hero runs from his past, wants to be `better than those ignorant folks back home'. Not Bubba. He likes beer, likes ogling strippers, likes fishing...and he'll dig graves for little old ladies and get the crap beat out of him on a daily basis because it's the right thing to do.It doesn't matter that he's a redneck. He's a hero to us; to him, he's just a guy doing his job, trying to make the world a little better because it's the right thing to do.So yeah, he deserves a beer.

WOW, what else can I say but WOW. Harness does it again with this book. He hits emotional highs and lows. I don't know anyone who can make you fall in love with a 350 6ft plus redneck monster hunter. This book is filled with backstory, emotion, and damn funny plot points. If you're thinking of reading this you've probably already read Bubba The Monster Hunter or one of Hartness's other great works so stop reading my damned review and read the book already.

OMG I love this author and Bubba! I came across these stories a few years ago, and I've loved them ever since. Bubba is always the man for the job, no matter how weird or dangerous. The various characters and critters make this whole series of stories the most fun and awesome thing I've read in a long time. If you love country boy + weird + crypto critters, you will want to read these! :D

Once you read one of the stories, you get the drift. Fast paced, entertaining and light. Caught a few typos and continuity glitches here and there. There is a certain continuity between the stories, but that means a few paragraphs in each, reviewing what has previously transpired. Good for occasional light entertainment, but I don't think anyone is going to sit down and read the whole series, start to finish.

Book two of the Bubba the Monster Hunter series was just as enjoyable as the first book. I just can't get enough of reading about Bubba, Amy, Uncle Father Joe and Skeeter. Loving the characters and the adventures that they always get into. Can't wait to finish book 3!

I laughed all through Season 1 but this became a bit tedious. Bubba becomes more sensitive and serious with some fairly cliched situations. Some editing errors were distracting as well.

I love these stories... Funny, short, and a lot of today's cultural references make this a great book to read on my work breaks.

Getting better. I'll keep buying to see where Hartness goes with the story.

Such a funny book to teach about nasal hygiene! Love Julia Cook's books and highly recommend her titles as options to teach your own children or for use in a daycare/school setting. The gross, little booger caught the interest of my students and kept it, while also delivering an important message, as most of her books do.

I teach 2nd grade and saw this when I was looking for another book. I shared it with our school nurse, who bought her own copy to use with students. I saw a jump in kids washing their hands after reading it. I also find its easier to address a nasty habit by using quotes from the book.

Funny, but helpful and informative. My daughter thinks this book is hilarious and it is really helping us! After only reading it a couple of times she was already remembering to ask for a tissue. She is 3 years old and has a picking problem. She saw kids doing it in her preschool and thought it was so funny to gross mom out, then it became a habit for her. We have 2 other books regarding this issue and this one has helped us the most. Almost an overnight change! So so so so glad I found this book!

This book captivated my kindergarten children. I have children with Asperger syndrome who are very bright and intelligent but often don't do the appropriate thing in social situations. We had a big problem with one particular child, his finger, his nose, and more. We laughed so much with this book. The kids requested it over and over. The therapists, guidance counselors, and other teachers want to borrow it. It Works!!! After one day, the nose picking, etc. was extinguished. The book sends a powerful and explicit message about germs and about socially acceptable behavior. It taught the children how others react to their behavior. It is a must have in any early childhood or special education class. Love it.

I was introduced to Julia cook when I read my prek class tattle tongue. I knew I had found a new favorite author when the kids continued to request the book. This lady gets kids and how their minds work. Boogers are something we discuss alot in prek and instead of embarrassing or singling out this might raise some light into why we don't eat our boogs lol

The book arrived quickly. It is a great book for parents, pre-school & elementary teachers. It teaches children about how to care for their boogers and the proper way to get rid of them. It is fun and educational. A must have for every classroom.

Love it! My kids were really engaged and grossed to tried to put their finger on their nose again.

The most I liked about this book was that my 4 year old Great Granddaughter understood about the importance of washing her hands after picking here nose without a tissue and that she was able to tell me that she had just washed her hands with soap and water because she had picked her "Booger" without a tissue.

From the Inside Flap

Allison Edwards, author of the best-selling book Why Smart Kids Worry, gives a glimpse into the ways worry whispers to young minds, and offers a powerful tool all children can use to silence those fears. Worry and anxiety are currently the top mental health issues among children and teens. Children have a number of worries throughout childhood that will come and go. The problem is not with the worries themselves, but that children believe the worries to be true. I bought this book for my daughter who suffers from anxiety. While it brought up some difficult emotions, she could completely identify with the characters. This book is beautifully written for young children and allows them to name their feelings. I love that this book is available for my daughter and can’t wait to share it with other parents of anxious children

Cute story about standing up to your “worry monster”. I use it in groups with elementary kids for dealing with anxiety. Addresses worries about social anxiety, taking risks, night time, and academics. Good book and illustrations.

Great book to help young Ones face their worries. Great topic starter.

I wasn't 100% sure what to expect from this book, but it is cute--nicely illustrated and the message is good and understandable to my 5 year old daughter. It felt like a good introduction into learning how to identify and overcome anxiety in a child...

Love! As a school counselor, I’m using this book several times a week! I use it for guidance lessons, small groups & in one-on-ones! Lends itself to conversations about growth mindset & positive self-talk!

I bought this book to use in my private counseling practice. I see a lot of children who have worries and this book has helped them get some perspective on their feelings!

I loved how this book flowed, and I loved all the relatable anxiety events that was discussed in the book. Brings up something that every kid should be able to relate to. Brings up plenty of talking points and ways to handle those scary thoughts. I encourage all parents to have this book.

Wonderful book, I use it as a therapy tool. Great illustrations and the story is wonderful

The quantity of projects in this book is amazing. There is so much to build from the simple to the complex. Everything is laid out with easy designs to follow, along with a comprehensive parts and materials list to buy. The beginning of the book has good info for the beginner on how to work with wood and what tools you will need to help overall construction. I bought this for my wife and told her to mark the pages of the things she wanted me to build. Near half the book is dog eared, I'll be busy for a long time and she'll be happy for a long time.

This is a great book for a DIYer that needs plans or ideas for projects. Already built the rabbit hutch in it.

I am not a carpenter or wood worker, but am attempting and slowly learning to be a homesteader. I was super excited to get this book and dig into it, and was so pleased to find projects I KNOW I will be able to complete myself! This is a book with many different projects that will serve both homesteaders and do-it-yourselfers alike. The photography along with the project directions will make these projects a true pleasure to dig into!

Great ideas. I think there could be a little more explanation needed for some of the directions as I am a 100% novice in this skill set. Glad I bought the book though and am looking forward to some construction projects. The author could add a difficulty rating to the designs to help.

It's for sure not a moderate diyers book. If you've been doing projects for awhile you could pull it off but not for me.

Kept the copy from the public library so long, we owed $1.40 in fines! This is a great book - solid resource for basic information, wonderful photos, project lists, and how-to information. It will be dog-eared in no time, as we are having s blast reviewing the many projects we'd like to tackle. Though our carpentry skills are basic, this gives enough information that I'm confident we will begin projects with greater confidence and end with success.

This book seems to have a lot of information that will be helpful. I'm pretty good at building my own projects so I think some of this info may not be as useful to me as the other books I received (The Backyard Homestead Farm Animals and The Backyard Homestead). Either way...this book is great and is worth purchasing!

Bought this for my do it all hubby, he is looking forward to trying out several of the projects this summer.

The Quest for Z: The True Story of Explorer Percy Fawcett and a Lost City in the Amazon, by Greg Pizzoli

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Percy Fawcett dreamed of being an explorer from the time he was a young child in the 1860s; the accounts of his explorer father and brother fueled his enthusiasm. Even his stint in the British Army in Sri Lanka afforded him the opportunity to investigate local jungles. On Fawcett's return home, he began training through the Royal Geographical Society, learning, for instance, which plants were poisonous and which were not. The Society hired him to map areas of Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru, including some of the most dangerous regions of the Amazon rain forest. Fawcett kept coming home safe and finding a new trip to lead. Throughout, he heard rumors of a fantastic ancient city reportedly deep in the Amazon area, a ruin he wanted to locate. So off he went in April 1925, with his 21-year-old son and another young man. Fawcett sold his story to a newspaper and promised regular reports so the papers could bring "live" news to their readers. This offering is for daring readers who prefer nonfiction: there's an unknown explorer to pique their interest, great back matter to demonstrate how to deepen their research, and Pizzoli's clever, humorous illustrations. However, this is very much a tale of British colonialism and will likely need to be supplemented with further discussions. VERDICT A swashbuckling adventure for large elementary school and nonfiction collections.—Dorcas Hand, formerly at Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston

Greg Pizzoli's lucid text, compelling light-hearted illustrations and serendipitous sidebars make this book hard to put down--even for adult readers. A tour de force for its projected readership, which should find it even more an adventure than his earlier masterful "Tricky Vic" which charmed our grandchildren, now 9 and 14 years old.

The author of Tricky Vic returns with another rip-roaring nonfiction picture book. It is the true story of Percy Fawcett, a British explorer who searched for an ancient city hidden in the Amazon rainforest. Fawcett had dreamed his entire life of being an explorer and as an adult took many treks into South America to map the region. They faced many dangers, such as huge snakes and natives with weapons. Many of the men he traveled with perished on the adventures but Fawcett survived. Others thought that the Amazon city was a myth while Fawcett insisted that it existed. If he found it, it would make him one of the most famous explorers of all time and one of the wealthiest too. This book tells his tale as he searched for the lost city.Pizzoli has a knack for selecting real life stories that most people, adults and children, will not have heard of. This one is a fascinating story of belief and bravery, about a man who left family and country behind in his quest to discover the unknown. Pizzoli tells the story with lots of action and a sense of adventure in his prose. There are moments where Pizzoli allows the action to slow, the wonder of the moment to grow, and the dangers to almost overwhelm. It’s written with skill and knowledge, building to a conclusion that suits the life of Fawcett to a Z.The book design and illustrations add so much to this nonfiction read. Done in a simple and clever style, just like Pizzoli’s picture books, the images add necessary humor to the book. The design of the book also allows additional information to be added on sidebars. Pizzoli uses his illustrations to also create moments of tension and drama, pausing the action for effect.Smart, stylish and successful, this nonfiction picture book will take readers on quite an adventure. Appropriate for ages 5-9.

A picture book biography of Percy Fawcett, a turn of the century British explorer who mapped many areas of the Amazon and disappeared into the jungle in a quest to find proof of an ancient major civilization in the Amazon which he referred to as Z.I've read the adult book on Fawcett by Grann The Lost City of Z and based on that, Pizzoli has done a great job of summarizing Fawcett's life and accomplishments for kids. He also manages to convey the dangers of jungle exploration without traumatizing readers. The illustration style helps with that, it's almost like illustration with icons or emoji-like. It's not super detailed but is attractive. A nice picture book biography for the more adventurous reader or those who like unsolved mysteries.Notes on content: A death is mentioned by arrows, but it is illustrated as a human outline with arrows resting on it and isn't gory. Dangers are mentioned, but they are illustrated apart from humans. Other explorers who disappeared are mentioned, no gory deaths described.

Pizzoli's biography of Fawcett starts on page 5 with a legend of an ancient city in Brazil that had been "forgotten." He tells us that "no one" knew where it was. That centers the story--and the reader, too--in a British point of view. The British didn't know where that city was.Let's assume there was, in fact, a city. If you centered the story in an Indigenous point of view, would we be reading "no one" knew where it was? I doubt it. For various reasons, Indigenous people who knew where it was might withhold its location from the likes of Fawcett. By the time Fawcett was traipsing about, the Indigenous people of South America had been fighting Brits for literally, hundreds of years. British expeditions were all over South America, looking for riches and enslaving Indigenous people to work on plantations and in mines. My point: British people didn't know where it was; saying "nobody" means that the only people who count, in this book, are British. The next pages in The Quest for Z tell us that every since he was little, Fawcett had dreams of traveling the world and exploring new places. On page 6, we see an illustration of him as a baby, holding a globe. On page 7, there's this one, too, showing him as a little boy, a teenager, and then as an adult. Overall, he looks harmless. Some might even say he looks endearing. You're supposed to see him that way. You're supposed to cheer for him. You're supposed to like him. You're supposed to want to go on his adventures with him.Percy Fawcett's first trip to South America was in 1906. When preparing for that trip, Pizzoli tells us that Fawcett took "gifts for any potentially hostile tribes he might encounter" (p. 12).That's all we get. Tribes who might be hostile. Why, though, might they feel unfriendly to Europeans? Do children who are reading this book have the knowledge they need to process why Indigenous people are being characterized as "hostile"? Pizzoli does nothing to tell children (or adults) why they might be hostile. If a book like this is going to be done, I think it is important to contextualize things like that. Leaving them simply as "hostile tribes" affirms and feeds ignorance.A few pages later, Pizzoli tells us about an expedition down the Rio Negro. The river got rough, so they had to get out of the water and carry their canoes through the forest to find safer waters. One of the crew went off to look for a route they could go on and didn't return. They found him, dead, "with forty-two arrows in his body" (p. 19).We aren't told who shot those 42 arrows, but we know who it was. Someone from those hostile tribes. We're supposed to feel bad for that fellow, there, with those arrows in him. Count them if you wish; Pizzoli made sure there are 42. Because this whole story is being told to us from a British (White) point of view, we're meant to see that man as courageous as he tried to find a better route. The account of his death is in the Exploration Fawcett, too. In it, Fawcett writes that the river was "infested" by "the dreaded Pascaguara Indians" (p. 115). Infested? Again, I wondered why this picture book for children was written. Fawcett was clearly racist but in Pizzoli's book, none of that comes through. We get lots of images of Fawcett as a jolly and courageous fellow.Turning the page, we learn that on another of his trips, Fawcett was warned to stay away from a certain area because "the natives who lived there would attack outsiders" (p. 20). The use of "outsiders" is the closest we get to a reason why the Native peoples there would respond as they did but I think it is far from sufficient. We already know that Fawcett is not one to turn away from danger. He goes on, despite the warnings.Soon, poison-tipped arrows fell from the sky. Fawcett and his crew were surrounded. He gave a bizarre order. The order? He told his crew to sing. They sang British songs. One guy played an accordion. It worked. The arrows stopped, and, "the two groups parted as friends." That account--about singing--is in the "Good Savage" chapter of Exploration Fawcett. Again, I wonder why this book was written, published, and why it is getting such rave reviews? What we have, in Pizzoli's book, is this:--hostile tribes--a British man killed by some of those hostile tribespeople--natives who would attack outsiders but who were won over by British music.Readers are not shown any of the Indigenous peoples in the places Percy Fawcett went. Instead, we have words about them, and illustrations of their poison-tipped arrows in and all around British men. In short, we have biased and stereotypical content. The "hostile tribes" in The Quest for Z are a stereotype. They are the Indians who attack, apparently without provocation or reason. We're meant to understand them as savages. But were they? In fact, they were attacking outsiders because those outsiders had been taking family members into slavery. Let's be real about what was going on! They were fighting to protect their moms. Their kids. Their dads, grandparents, and their siblings. Some of those "hostile" Indians are simple minded, lulled out of their aggression by British song.I noted above that I read Fawcett's writings as I reviewed Pizzoli's picture book. In the chapter titled River of Evil, Fawcett wrote about how construction of a railroad had driven Indigenous people from their homelands in Madeira. He shares a story told to him by a "half-caste" who described finding two Indigenous people who went on a hunger strike to protest what was happening. One died, but the other? "We strung him up to a tree by the heels and had a little rifle practice on him. He died at the eight shot. It was great fun!" (p. 123).During those trips, Fawcett continued to hear about that lost city. In April of 1925, he set out to find it. Newspapers carried reports of his progress. In his last report, he wrote that he expected to find the city in August. But that was, in fact, his last report. He didn't return. Since then, Pizzoli tells readers in the final pages of his book, many treasure hunters, fame seekers, and movie stars have tried to find out what happened to him. As many as a hundred of them have gone missing, too.On the last page (p. 40), Pizzoli tells us that Fawcett is famous--not for his success--but for his failure. His "amazing adventures" and his "unparalleled passion" give him a place in history. With his book, Pizzoli adds to this racist man having a place in history. But with this book, Pizzoli also adds to, and affirms, stereotypes of Indigenous people. He's made colonialism a good thing. It was not.So--again--why did this book get published? What does it offer?Obviously, I do not recommend Greg Pizzoli's The True Story of Explorer Percy Fawcett and a Lost City in the Amazon. In the first paragraph of his Author's Note, Pizzoli writes that, as he worked on this biography, he felt like he had lost his way, but he kept on working on this book because, he writes in the fourth paragraph, "we all hunt for unknowable answers, and dream of places where the problems of our lives will dissolve away." He's right. Many of us do that, but I wish Pizzoli had set the manuscript aside--or that he'd written it in a way that was critical of racism, stereotypical ideas, and colonialism. He didn't do that, though, and so--we've got another book for children that denigrates Native peoples. This vicious cycle, continues, and we're all the worse for it.

This biography of explorer Percy Fawcett is beautifully illustrated and well told. Pizzoli likes to choose historical figures that are unpopular or famous for the wrong reason. In this case, Fawcett never actually found a Lost City, and died in his pursuit of it. I think it's important for children to read about failure sometimes, and to realize that a life lived doing what one is passionate about is a success in itself.

Very enjoyable book. I started getting restless about 3/4 of the way through because it started to repeat itself. Face it, the quintuplets didn’t really do new and exciting things but the author was able to add some romance. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I would have liked to have more of the main characters story. The ending was a surprise.

Somewhere in the back of our minds, we all probably remember hearing about the Dionne quintuplets – the first full set of quintuplets to survive past birth. But I doubt many know their names or anything at all about them. Did you even know that there are only two surviving Dionne quintuplets today?I had no idea that that quintuplets lived their first decade of life as “animals in a zoo”. They were confined within a “hospital” built across the road from the house they were born in and where the rest of their family lived. The story is told from the perspective of a young woman who was with them at the moment of their birth and continued to live with the girls for several years. Emma Trimpany, aged 17, was pushed into midwifery by her mother with the Dionnes being her first - and only - client. She was present for the harrowing birth of Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Marie, and Émilie. The quintuplets were born to a French-Canadian couple who already had five children. Due to the uniqueness of the situation, the Canadian government made the babies wards of the British king. Hired to care for them were Dr. Dafoe, who delivered the babies and is credited for their survival, and a small staff of nurses which included Emma who kept a detailed journal on the girls. It is estimated that each day there were over 6000 visitors come to view the babies at “Quintland”, as the “hospital” came to be known. They were a commercial entity bringing in millions of dollars to the Canadian government and advertising companies. Much was made of the girls being identical, but what makes this book so interesting is the focus on the uniqueness of each girl. “One loves bumblebees and bath time; one loves thunderstorms but is scared of the dark; one for whom the only thing better than building sand castles is getting to knock them all down; one who loves to finger-paint and knows how to tie her shoes; one who hates beets but is not the least bit squeamish about blood.”I felt sickened to read of the battles regarding custody and the products the girls may have used, such as which company’s corn syrup they first used. But my heart was warmed by the efforts made by some of the nurses to protect the girls from their celebrity and the greedy power struggles that surrounded them. I enjoyed the scenes describing the children as typical little mischief makers and moments of tenderness. It is obvious that Wood did extensive research in preparation for writing her book. She includes several archived newspaper articles from the Toronto Star. She also weaves in a couple of love stories. The writing was superb and I loved the book until the train scene toward the end. What??!! Was VERY disappointed.

Reality television – or any television – hadn’t been invented yet when the Dionne Quintuplets were born in Canada in 1934, but if it had been, their lives wouldn’t have been any less tragic, or crazy.Their story, as told by Emma Trimpany, a seventeen-year-old midwife-in-training, is the dichotomy of the the fish and the fishbowl. Inside, Emma sees each of the five “Quintland Sisters” – ripped from their family by the doctors who saw them as a means to fame and fortune – as a unique person, each with a name, a personality, her own personhood. But to outsiders it’s the similarities that attract, and people come from miles around to gawk at the girls in their specially-built playground. What struck me about this book, which is a fictional retelling of a true story, is how much the Dionne Quintuplets’ story is so similar to the stories we see today – the OctoMom media frenzy ended up with similar product placement opportunities, and, while not precisely the same, the Hensel twins (the famous conjoined twins) have likewise been media darlings their entire lives.Wood does an amazing job capturing the period, the Dionne family’s distress and confusion – sure, they’re uneducated and poor, but that doesn’t make them unfit parents. The juxtaposition of Depression-era austerity with the lavishness given to the girls, and not their parents was also quite well shown. I liked the device of using Emily as the point of view character, as she was closer in class to the Dionnes and closer in education to the doctors… she was the perfect betwixt-and-between person to let us see all perspectives.Overall, I found the story to be unsettling, but I believe that was the intent. It should be unsettling to read about children being treated more like an exhibition than people.Goes well with tea and strawberry cupcakes. Carnival food.

In some ways, given how common multiple births are today, it's amazing and jaw dropping to read about what happened to the Dionne quintuplets. Told from the perspective of their young nanny Emma, it covers their first five years. Emma's an interesting character (she's not a real person) and her view of things, as well as her involvement provides the fiction element of a story which has become better known over the years. There are parts of this which I found annoying - Wood is especially unkind to the mom- but others that were intriguing. There's a plot line which seemed incongruous at first and made the end less than satisfying for me. That said, it was a good read. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. For fans of historical fiction.

More than just book of wonderful recipes, this is a book that chronicles an extraordinary life-- a life well lived. A beautifully written verbal map precedes each recipe and gives the food historical and visual context. The images conjured by Mr. Kempton’s prose made me feel connected to the food, as if I were dining in a Basque village or some tropical paradise. Oh yes, the food is delicious, and the recipes are well executed and easy to follow. I found that Amazon is able to deliver many of the exotic or difficult to find ingredients in one day.

Surfers and non-surfers will all enjoy and cherish this book. I've purchased 3 copies ( as gifts) because Jim's book is perfect for anyone who enjoys travel, cooking, great photography, and has a respect for global surfing.

Great book written by a high school friend. Am enjoying the stories and will soon try some of the recipes.

The recipes are inspiring, diverse, and mostly pretty simple; the author's stories from his world travels are engaging even for non-surfers; and the photography, both of the food and the destinations (Morocco, Hawaii, Peru, California, France, and more), is gorgeous.

I initially bought this book as a hostess gift (its visually appealing cover caught my eye.) Before my event, I couldn't help but take my own sneak peek. I found myself completely captivated by Jim's stories and imagery. Each recipe is beautifully set up by putting the reader in the location and experiencing the culture from where the recipe originated. Of course, I couldn't help but purchase a copy of my own!! I also love that there is so much recipe variety (in terms of both region and meal course.) I highly recommend for surfers and non-surfers alike! I'm sure I'll be buying again as it truly does make a great gift and one that I can be proud giving.

Good stories that made me remember some fine old times. Time with friends doing 2 things we love to do; surf and eat! Isn't that what a good book should do...put the reader right into the scene. Kempton does that very well. Then comes the food. The recipes all sound amazing. The crab bisque is delicious. I haven't prepared many of these yet but I will be.

Taking inspiration from his own experiences as a surfer, journalist, entrepreneur, and world traveler. Jim has created a blend of gourmet and visual thought-provoking reflections of scenes few will ever experience.Jim gives food for thought, for readers to imagine themselves as part of an interesting culture. Incredible photos, stories, and fantastic recipes, makes this book a must for anyone who loves travel and great food. One of the best presents you can give this year for the holidays.

I got this cookbook for my wife and I have to say I can't put it down myself. The amazing travels and stories filled in with insane food dish recipes. I'm super stoked I got this cookbook. Can't recommend it highly enough ...5 stars doesn't do it justice. A must have ~ enjoy
