I'm very pleased with this book. As someone who is a little OCD, I've been going through it and annotating it- I'm on my second read. I love the way it's organized. Since Berlin is a pretty compact city, it's nice the books is organized in to districts. We're staying in Mitte (the middle) so I started with that one. This book gives you great descriptions of the museums, layouts of the floor plans (very helpful) and it also suggests places to eat that are near. I Yelped several of the places (and found a few more that I'd already booked into, because I looked for the Yelp list of best restaurants in Berlin). I'd combine the recommendations in the book with Yelp- just to make sure you're not going to a tourist trap, or a place that isn't very good. A few of the recommendations in this book were clunkers, and a few were closed- so check before you go! You'll get a nice little history of many of the buildings and monuments in the books, and a nice pull out map. There are sections on where to stay (I did not need that- and my very nice hotel was not listed, so not sure about this section), where to eat, where to be entertained- etc. Some of the walks mentioned in the book seemed interesting. I might do a few of them. They seem like decent suggestions. All in all I am very glad I bought the book. It's given me a lot of useful information and allowed me to plan my days so I keep everything close together, and don't waste to much time walking to and fro- as I'd like to see as much as I can in the short amount of time I have in the city.
After reading and examining the guide from cover to cover, I realized that it is a very informative and efficient little guide. There are a couple of points I would like to discuss. I will try to be as brief as possible.Granted, this guide has a lot of details and useful information. Perhaps, one of the best things about the guide is that it makes references to the main places in Berlin (e.g. Brandenburg Gate) by their German connotations and spellings. This, I personally think is useful, since once you are in Berlin, it would be easier to ask for directions and/or the specific cultural landmarks.Further, the pull-out map is simply AMAZING. It is not too big, but not too small, either. In fact, I find it to be the perfect side. So you get an idea, I was able to use Post-It's on the map for notation purposes and other uses. Also, since it is laminated, you can mark it with Sharpie. You can also use highlighter, but it fades away with use quicker (much more) than with a Sharpie.The reason I am giving this pocket guide a four is due to the fact that when making cross-references with online research (e.g. with hotels or restaurants), some of the places or names given in the guide were not completely accurate. In other words, when I tried looking for a restaurant or a hotel, I would have a hard time finding information of the same because they have different names. That, to me at least, is a disadvantage.Moreover, I wish the guide focused a bit more on solo-travelers. The way the guide is written, it seems as it was designed for family-traveling. In this sense, I wish it had more detail on traveling (via public transpiration). Don't get me wrong. The U- and S-Bahn map is useful (once you learn how to read it lol), but I wish it had more detail.Finally, although the guide has multiple pages dedicated solely to restaurants and bars, their descriptions seem to be rather short. They have a tiny paragraph for tens of restaurants. I wish that, instead, they had only a couple of hand-picked restaurants with full-blown menu and place description.Overall, I do think that this guide will definitely be my survival bible once I am at Berlin. Highly recommend it, though!
What I like best about this guide was the suggested itineraries. Giving ideas for day trips and multi-day adventures. Suggestions for your mornings, lunches and afternoons. Ideas based on where you are and how much time you have, with kids or without, frugal traveler or 1st class extravagance were all presented. Very handy.Even better is the comprehensive, tourist friendly street map and the also included removable street map! Yes, two maps of subway, train and streets.Various chapters sort the book into neighborhoods, attractions, food choices and general information. All presented with fabulous pictures and illustrations. I found this book to be incredibly useful for planning and general activities while in Berlin.Highly recommended.
Excellent travel guide for Berlin. The pictures were quite lovely, and it was fairly easy to find the sections of Berlin where sights were located. The maps could have been better by showing more detail. All in all, I was pleased with the book.
The Berlin travel guide by DK is the third that I have purchased before traveling overseas. They're great for planning your trip and helping you around the city once you get there. The information has always been accurate and they are small enough to carry around with you. I'm a big history geek too, so I appreciate all of the background information that these books provide. They give you a lot of insight into your destination. If you had to pick one travel guide to take with you, this is it! I wouldn't travel without one.
