Great book for military personnel transitioning into civilian jobs

Words cannot describe how helpful this book is - for veterans and civilians alike! Lisa is gifted at breaking down complex marketing ideas (branding is a huge industry for a reason!) into approachable, easy to understand AND implement action steps. She explains why a veteran should work through his/her personal brand and then walks you through step-by-step. I've had multiple breakthroughs while working through this book and am excited to encourage others to not only read it, but study it as they transition. So grateful for Lida's contributions to our transitioning veteran community by sharing her knowledge in our terms. I can see the years of study and relationship building she put into this effort and it is clearly a passion project for her that our community will benefit from for years to come!

In the military we all learned to think and act like a team but when you transition out, you need to now focus on what you bring to the table and offer employers. Lida's book is a guide I wish I had when I got out but even now 20 years later, it's a great reference for maximizing your personal brand with others. As an Army Vet, it was strange to realize I needed a personal brand. Lida breaks down different aspects of of the transition including everything from a look at the culture you are transitioning into, to why personal branding is important and to how to prepare for an interview. She does this in an easy to read format filled with great examples. Definitely a must read for any of us who have served.

Lida Citroen takes her well documented civilian experience and applies it to our military personnel transitioning out of the service. Lida knows branding and how to coach our GIs. She has a remarkable way of speaking our language in a way that challenges and encourages us to identify our skills, abilities, and talents.I know Lida personally and have the privilege of working with her in a variety of venues. Lida writes in an honest, down to earth manner that both keeps it simple yet respects our hard work in the military. She explains in detail some of the most daunting things we face from how to even start writing a resume, what is "business" dress (explaining that a "suit" means a jacket and pants made of the same fabric!!) Yeah, we have a hard time sometimes after being in the military for 20+ years what we really need to do to make the successful transition. Everyone. Should. Read. This. Book! It's also applicable if you're transitioning from being a college student to the work world, or if you've been with one company for a long time and are laid off. THANK YOU LIDA!

As a business executive, I can appreciate the value of veterans in the corporate environment. What Lida spells out in "Your Next Mission" will give military veterans the clarity, tools and resources to effectively navigate the complexities of a civilian environment and build on their natural strengths to have successful and fulfilling careers. Dr. Michelle Stevens, a psychologist, is the founder and director of Post-Traumatic Success, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and inspiring those affected by psychological trauma. She studied writing at New York University before earning her doctorate in psychology from Saybrook University, where her thesis was honored as the Dissertation of Distinction. As a counselor with over 25 years experience working with abuse survivors, I found this book to be a beautiful mix of personal testimony and psychological treatise on the elements necessary to bring healing to such trauma. While I highly recommend this book to both professionals and any who desire a greater understanding of these themes, the reader should be aware that this book contains a great deal of painful, shocking realities which might be triggering to some.

This was a hard book to read being a victim of child sexual abuse. I read it over a weekend and had different emotions while reading it. I felt guilty reading the details of what was going on in her life at the time, maybe because I had hid my memories so much in the back of my mind for so many years... I am not sure. I do wish that she explained a little more on what happened when she took her parents to court. (she mentioned it briefly in the book).

It was an awesome book! I loved the fact that even though Michelle went through hell....she overcame and conquered her fears. I suffer from PTSD myself and although it is not from abuse...rather from multiple major car accidents. I learned a great deal. I am still in counseling and making great progress, although I still have my bad days as well. Injuries after injuries...plus 13 surgeries and facing another it has been gruesome at times. I taught many years myself, but started having physical signs from not acknowledging my own pain. It came out in seizures and fainting spells. I will never give up just as you didn't...I am so proud of you and all the people you are helping with DID!!! :-)

In a first for me, I could.not.put.this.book.down until i reached the last page. I read memoirs, autobiographies, true crime - never has any account changed my mind as completely as this story. To this day I still don't understand grown women who proclaim to "love" their abusers. Those who allow their children to be abused are despicable, like the author's mother, who had no reason to fear for her own safety. Prior to reading this book, I also could not understand why children don't "tell." The author has done a wonderful job in explaining why, in a way that no one has done before. I get it now. On behalf of his victims I do feel cheated that the evil called Gary Lundquist never suffered a single day of the pain, humiliation and trauma he inflicted. One can only hope there really is a hell for him and his ilk. I also hope that Michelle knows there are many thousands of us who are proud of her and wish continued happiness and success in her future. Final!y, thank you, Michelle, for opening my eyes.

I almost put this book away several times because it was hard to read the detailed abuse she suffered. However, she writes so well and true and helps the reader understand SO much more than her story. I feel more educated on abuse, abusers, mental illness and a lot more. Michelle's story has inspired me to help others that experienced what she did. Although I am not a survivor of child abuse, I hope to make a difference in someone else's life that is.

I highly recommend this book. I know most people don't like reading about child abuse, child trafficking but I feel it's necessary to understand and have empathy since the news outlets often downplay how common and terrible child trafficking is. It's much easier to read news about celebrities and light hearted issues vs something as terrible as child trafficking. However, I learned quite a bit about how child abuse can effect a person's entire life.

Michelle's narrative is clear and powerful. In telling her truth, she is making a difference in more lives than she knows. If you've been there, she gets you, if you love someone who has been assaulted, she opens your eyes. The time I spent reading this book changed my life and outlook. Thank you.

I'm a little bummed out on this book. I thought to myself when I first saw it listed - "Hey, finally here's a book that goes over the Beaglebone Black." (There aren't many books sad to say). I look in the sample, and see that the author chose Ubuntu over the Angstrom distro (which I cant stand), so I think cool. After working through the getting python up and running, I see the author go over Vision and Audio - over USB, and I go uh-oh. I scan through the rest of the book, and see nothing but USB sensors and devices.NOT ONE FREAKING BLURB ON USING ALL THAT GPIO HARDWARE ON THE BBB.The main excuse is - not wanting the user to damage his board. Duh. Why would I buy this board if I didn't want the hardware? I could have bought another RPi if I wanted that. There a lot easier to set up and use than the BBB.For all I know, the GPIO isn't even functional on the BBB with Ubuntu. Didn't see one iota of proof of it.Another complaint is the level of detail. An author of a book like this shouldn't gloss over detail on getting specific functionality - that is why you bought the book in the first place. With this book, your going to do a lot of googling to get the specifics. Not crazy about that.Other than those grouching points - I would still buy this book, since there are just so few - I just wish the title had been "Beaglebone Black USB Robotic Projects". That would have nailed it on the head, and I would have been aware of what I was getting.I was pretty much snookered on this one.Now you won't be :)

For people who learn by doing,this book will definitely hit the mark. The subject matter is presented through incremental builds of robotics projects, and delivers good value with lots of interesting and stimulating projects. I am definitely happy to own it, and the material gave me at least one or two missions after my current build.Having said that, this book misses out on the deeper elements of the beaglebone. The projects are heavy on integrating usb peripherals, and definitely target more rudimentary features of the beaglebone. I would have liked to see a little more around the GPIO pins, memory mapping to improve performance, and general expansion on the more technical aspects of the beaglebone.This book has plenty of positives going for it though, and I think it is a solid addition to the bookshelf. It was worth the money to me, and I would purchase it again in hindsight. I am still waiting for the brilliant technical reference to the beaglebone, but this book did a very nice job of walking readers through the possibilities of really neat experiments including vision, speech recognition, and autonomous behaviors. Would have gotten the 5th star if it took a dive into more geeky elements of the board.

"This book is designed for the informed beginner." is a quote from the author. I think it pretty accurately describes where I am with the Beaglebone Black. Actually, it is not too far from where I am with Linux as well.The book title suggests that it is for those who have an interest in robotics. I didn't have any interest in robotics when I started, but I do now. I just ordered a Sparkfun 2 wheeled robot platform and a couple of Pololu motor controllers with the intend of building a few of the projects that i didn't have the parts for.The Beaglebone Black can be frustrating - an Arduino clone it is not. But, it is a complete Linux 1Ghz computer with a lot of I/O. The default Angstrom distribution is not as close to being as stable as the Debian Wheezy distruibution supplied with the Raspberry Pi. (As of the time of this review the BBB is likely to get a default Debian distribution very soon.) Mr. Grimmett overcomes this by having you load an Ubuntu distribution on a sd card and boot from it instead. I used a 16GB card and have room to spare after reading the instructions on how to reclaim the unused space on page 89.I liked this book. It was almost a perfect fit for me. I knew the BBB could do lots of things but never really had any luck with some of the online tutorials that I tried. Because of the book I got my USB camera to work, showing video via OpenCV. With one of those cheapie USB sound cards and a Logitech headset I was able to record and play sounds via the ALSA library. I even tried a little speech recognition. This book is very good at showcasing the BBB's built in capabilities and actually getting them to work. To be honest, I had no idea you could build a robot by plugging in a bunch of controllers into a powered USB hub.So, should you buy this book? Well, if you're an "informed beginner", by all means. I found it a lot of fun - not only getting my Beaglebone Black to do something but giving me more much needed confidence with Linux. I am also looking forward to the day my robot parts arrive. There is a lot to get from this book.

I just returned from a 3-week safari in Africa where we visited 6 different national parks and conservancies, one of which, Amboseli National Park in Kenya, is known as an elephant sanctuary. We saw many elephants in every park, herds of up to 30 animals, and really enjoyed watching these giant beasts move gracefully across the land, munching everything in their paths.This collection of essays from experts in the field of elephant behavior and conservation addresses many aspects of the problems that have beset this species in a thoughtful and very academic way. I’ve been reading one essay a day and, though there is some duplication in what the authors are writing, each essay brings a different perspective to the issues. Some of the articles are quite academic, and there are some sections that I just skim through; however the in-depth treatment of this very complex topic is well worth the investment of time to read these articles. It’s easy to think that poaching is the main threat to elephants, but the human animal conflict caused by loss of habitat is equally dangerous. Addressing that problem thoughtfully will remain a challenge as long as both species continue to exist.The copy of the book I’m reading is an uncorrected black and white proof, but the many pictures are still quite beautiful. I’m sure they are stunning in full color! Whether you’re a conservationist or just a lover of this important species, there is much information and knowledge to be gained from this book.

I hesitated getting this book, because reading about bad things happening to elephants often makes me cry. I don't know why their deaths seem more devastating to me than the deaths of other wild animals. There is definitely death and much sadness in this book, from poaching to translocated orphaned baby elephants saved from culls. Yet there are also fascinating stories of elephant studies and individual elephants. Plus, stories of those who work to keep African elephants from becoming extinct, including the rangers who deal with the poachers. This book is loaded with all sorts of diverse information, as well as close-up and aerial pictures of elephant herds. The pictures in the ARC were black and white, but they will be in color in the final copy. It's a big, heavy book about a big, heavy animal that cannot be allowed to be annihilated by greed and stupidity.

This is a book with many authors -- activists, conservationists, photographers, zoologists, guides, scientists, even a criminologist.The first chapters focus on various aspects of conservation, starting with a fascinating census project, while the second half of the book looks at individual countries: South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Gabon, the Congo, the Central African Republic, Togo, Nigeria, Chad and Mali.The photos are fantastic, especially in the first chapters. The writing is sometimes factual and scientific, but just as often it's subjective and emotional.The book concludes with ways to get involved with conservation efforts, a guide to elephant behaviors, a good bibliography, and b&w images of postal stamps that feature elephants.

This book would appear to be the consummate consumer level publication on the present state of elephants on the African continent. Beautiful photographic illustrations. Heart warming individual studies and stories as well as (often too many) numbers and statistics. My heart breaks for these beautiful and possibly most majestic of God's creatures, indeed under threat of extinction just for monetary profit.As always, I resent the preachiness that I am part of the problem because I'm a human being. Not true. But there's not too much of that in this book and I was, of course, expecting it.Very, very comprehensive. The reader may give into the urge to browse this substantial work. Go ahead. Or read it all. Disturbing, informative, and will likely bring a tear to the eye.

I would love to give this book 5 stars as the subject is so worthy of it. Unfortunately many of the essayists get bogged down in stats and numbers. For those who support conservation but find it difficult to read pages of stats or even extrapolate what they mean, it makes this book difficult to get through. Not all the essays are written this way. It is a book worth reading but the reader has to pick the essays s/he wants to read.My advanced copy only had black and white photos. I do not know if the published book will have color photos. Those are needed to make the book appeal to more readers. those photos connect us more to the subject. We see the beauty in these magnificent creatures not just the starkness of their plight.

I love elephants, so human like...truly the gentle giants of the earth...the books is just full of such interesting facts...and, sadly, the reality is, poachers have no mercy on these gentle giants...so hurtful and disturbing to see some of the pix of tusks, etc, but this is the reality of our world, and it has compelled me to do my part....I got an advance copy, B&W, so pix are OK, but I think the final release will have pix that are much better, making it a good coffee table book for the animal lover...

You will take much from this book. If it is from the elephants angle, or from the rangers and what they do, or simply awareness. A sad book. And it does hurt to know that some people simply do not care about living things. You will leanr a lot in this book, as I did - very interesting facts present. The book is slightly on the heavier side. I wished it came with HD colors, it was instead black and white; I did receive an advanced copy.
