This text is fantastic. It does just what the description asserts... which is"...engages students in the essential theoretical debates around contemporary photography. While not shying away from the necessity for the serious study of theory, not least in the core approaches of semiotics and psychoanalysis, it strikes just the right balance between erudition and plain explanation."I couldn't have said it better myself... OBVIOUSLY.Chapter 5 (on Landscape) is worth the price of the entire book. In it, the author explores the distinction between "the picturesque" and "the sublime"... offering surprising insights into how we view the world. Chapter 6 (on still life) is similarly eye opening... as it opens up a fascinating discussion of how still life photography.. and the idolization and idealization of "the object" is explained as central to commercial advertising photography. And the images of advertising are (of course) the very images which construct our view of so much.Those two chapters (5 & 6) really shine.What is VERY interesting about this text is that the author explores the nature of photography by way of genres (documentary, portrait, landscape, and still life)... and in so doing, explores the very nature of art itself. It's interesting to consider that traditional fine art mediums such as painting are NEVER called upon to explain their genres.. but photography (late to the fine art party) must always explain WHAT and WHY it is doing. By considering the meanings in these genres, the author does a wonderful job of discussing the meaning of art at all.This was just a great text.

Smart, useful, a very good overview of current thinking about photography historically contextualized.

Very insightful book

This is a reasonably academic review about the philosophical and cultural impact of photography in recent history. It would likely work best as a supplimental college textbook for photographic theory at the post and undergraduate level. Concise and certainly worth one's time to read. Well broken down into short chapters and sections and is highly accessible as a result.

Well-organized, easy to find most of the answers for my notary reappointment test. Some of it is a bit difficult to understand (wordy, and some of the procedures are complex, which isn't the book's fault) but at least the table of contents and list of subjects at the beginning of each chapter makes it easy to find an answer.

Unauthorized publish of NC Department of Secretary of State. Is illegal according to our professor teaching the subject - Notary Public Manual. Even the cover of book is miss spelled - Manuala instead of Manual, North Crolina instead of North Carolina. The list goes on. DO NOT BUY!!!

According to NC Notary, this manual is a forgery. If you notice, the word "manual" is incorrectly spelled "manulal".

I bought this because I had to have it to take my exam. It was priced much lower than everywhere else. The information seems good, I don't really think it's fair to rate this book because the state of NC makes notaries purchase it....

I bought it, because the law requires me to have it.

I'm a model railroader and this book with its many, many pictures of civil war locomotives burst the image I had of all steam locomotives of the day looking like the one in Wild, Wild, West and all of the typical Westerns I had seen over the years.I'm getting myself a laser cutter soon and I'm going to enjoy making several models like the not quite the norm Civil War 4-4-0's in this book.It's got a real good perspective on everything on the rails and near the rails in both captures and text . I can tuck seriously into the detailed descriptions of the pictures and the general operations and situations of the day, or just sit back and zero in on the little noticed details hiding in each picture..It's a great book that I think is more overlooked than it deserves. Go for it.

This book combines two of my greatest interest, Railroads and the Civil War. After many, many hours searching websites and trying to collect Civil War era railroad photos, I came across this book. It was published back in the 60's, but Amazon connected me with someone willing to part with their copy. I am now holding all of those photos I've been trying to collect. If you've seen a Civil War railroad photo anywhere, I'm sure you will find it in this book. It does have writing as well, but you'll want it for the photos!

Bought this book for my brother who is a Civil War fanatic and train buff. Wonderful pictures, interesting information on trains used in the Civil War...

Had alot of marks written in it. Was not advertised as new. Correct book.

Love love LOVE this book! I teach a small class of kids ages 7-11, and this is just what they needed to be introduced to Shakespeare. I especially love the author's introduction where he explains how he came up with this idea and what the purpose of the book is (to introduce kids to Shakespeare in a fun way). My students just started reading this last week and so far are enjoying it - they can't wait to perform it. I especially like how there are 3 versions of the play, so I don't have to cut the script up myself if I have more/less students.

I have been using Brendon Kelso's, Shakespeare for Kids Books for several years in my sixth grade reading classes. My students LOVE these plays!I introduce each story by reading the children's version written in the book, Shakespeare Stories for Young Readers by Edith Nesbit. Then I select a couple of YouTube summaries of the play that have been posted by high school students and are usually quite funny. When students have a basic understanding of the play's story, they are given Brendan's scripts to act out. They have a ball! Character parts are picked randomly by drawing character names out of a bag. Then a two minute "switch time” is provided for students to trade character parts with other students. (However, more often than not male students TRY to get female parts.) By acting out the plays: true collaborative learning occurs, they get a real understanding of the stories, and they have a great time! Moreover, state standards are met when collaborative groups eagerly learn to create: plot structure diagrams, character analysis charts, themes, etc.You don’t have to be an expert on Shakespeare’s work in order to teach it, and your students will always remember the great time they had learning Shakespeare in your class!One more suggestion: Accompany the play with a showing of the movie version with Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton. There are some parts that should be skipped over for younger viewers, but my students were captivated by this old movie and they were able to accurately visualize the idea of a "Shrew", which added to their acting out the play!

The kids had so much fun putting on this play. I like how there were 3 different plays you could do depending on how many kids and how much time you had.

I bought this to see if it was acceptable for seventh grade drama. It was too short for my purpose but I loved it. It is well written and can be very funny with the right cast

(Starts throwing dollars all over the stage and in the audience).TRANIO: I have more! (Pulls out his credit card).BAPTISTA: (Grabs credit card) Okay then, Lucentio, you get Bianca! You can marry her after Katherina's wedding IF you can get your father to pay the dowry. If not then Gremio can have her. (BAPTISTA exits) Brendan Kelso is a talented writer. After I read The Taming of the Shrew, I fell in love with it! It is hilarious (like the excerpt above), and I love how melodramatic he makes the characters (especially Petruchio). I now own all of Kelso's plays, and I love them all. As a homeschooled student, I have acted in many of his plays, but my favorite is The Taming of the Shrew! I am currently reading Shakespeare's version, and I'm understanding it perfectly. I can't wait for his next script!

As a part of our Classical Conversations home school curriculum, we are diving into Shakespeare's "A Taming if the Shrew". I can already tell we are going to have a blast performing this version in class and for parents. I reached out to the authors for permission to copy the book for my students. About the Author

Noël Coward was born in 1899 in Teddington, Middlesex. He made his name as a playwright with The Vortex (1924), in which he also appeared. His numerous other successful plays included Fallen Angels (1925), Hay Fever (1925), Private Lives (1933), Design for Living (1933) and Blithe Spirit (1941). During the war he wrote screenplays such as Brief Encounter (1944) and In Which We Serve (1942). In the fifties he began a new career as a cabaret entertainer. He published volumes of verse and a novel (Pomp and Circumstance, 1960), two volumes of autobiography and four volumes of short stories: To Step Aside (1939), Star Quality (1951), Pretty Polly Barlow (1964) and Bon Voyage (1967). He was knighted in 1970 and died three years later in Jamaica.
