This is outstanding reading -- the sort of voices (there are two readers) that one would like to imagine Donne himself might have had. My copy played immediately upon putting it in my machine. The engineers should be proud of their accomplishments. Arguably a good introduction to Donne, it should also provide hours of enjoyment to aficionados of the Master.

Why Donne's sermons aren't more widely read is a mystery. The poetry, grace, timeliness and thoughtfulness in them should be required reading of this generation of preachers-who-wanna-be-stand-up-comics!

This is one of those poets that motorra (at least my mom, who is in her 70's loves from youth! I personally very much like the poetry, sonnets and poems with regard to God that are all included (I chuckled at a few of the names). Even I loved and wrote poetry, haiku and emotional poetry into my 30's - as I read some of the great poets, (Browning, Dickensin, etc.), I see my lack of the beauty and love, despair and even the ones about hate, (at times), and am in awe of the gifts they naturally were given to share with those whom were to be meant to enjoy them.Perhaps, our children would become more literate, happier, (with MUCH better use of the English language). Just a dream - I do this for my son who is in his 20's! Imaging if your child were to actually sit down by you, and then talk to you about a problem they are having that they "KNOW" they are the very first person in world to hAve this "problem," - you could then go to some of these poets who are really easily understood, review table of contents; and if you hare personally never e xperienced what they have gone through, there have been GREAT TRUE poets who have been sharing their pain. Happiness, fear, dismay, unloved...on and on! You could share the poem with them! Of course, you will want to make SURE you havd read and understood the prose and ultimate meaning for them to understand some of them) - but think of the REWARDS! Christians use the Bible! I use it too, but I have also used poetry and / I taught him the different genre's and forms and before computers, put a dictionary in front of us; I say we began reading it when he was 3! He began attempting and, I think successfully beginning his love of writing, not only poems, although they are usually his outlet. - oh, please remember that this author is excellent! I wish thry had taught some of his works in my younger days! - LAST thing - I promise! I just get so excited about helping children with emotions, showing them others have experienced (at THEIR age), some of the hard times, despair, loneliness, cruelty by other children / that poetry is a good place to start with your kids (there IS poetry for young children) - to start or help them with the need to be able to not only think they are alone with their problems, but that others kids their age (again, I say this!), and see they are not alone in what they are suffering, PLUS, if they are scared to share them with you, you are also teaching them the tool of getting pain out / abc you get the joy at their very young age of showing them your excitement about their writing and thank them for trusting you! Huge issue!are the ones

This book saved my life! No really. When I read this book 12 years ago, I was able to quit heroin for good. And trust me when i say that I was an addict of the hopeless variety.

The Tao of Pooh was awesome. It really helped me be content with where I am in life at the moment. It stresses a release from ego and being in touch with the flow of the world. I am pretty new to the concept of Taoism, but the author presented it in an easy-to-follow way and put more emphasis on the philosophy part than the religious part.One common criticism is that it comes off as anti-intellectual at times. I agree to an extent, but it is important to realize that being smart doesn't instantly make your life better. There is no end to the pursuit of knowledge, and while science is a crucial part of modern life, it isn't the key to happiness or a fulfilling life.I would recommend this to anyone who feels like there is something missing in their life, or for those who struggle to be happy because of depression and/or anxiety.

It has a lot of good insight, and a lot of things to think about in life. Overall I'm glad that I read it but I did have quite a few issues with it as well. The author very obviously does not like modern technology or the United States. And that's fine, we do have a lot to work on. but he would say negative things about people being busy and basically talked negatively about workers, but then some of the examples for success he gave were the greatest inventor in architecture of our time, and Thomas Edison. Not making great correlations.Also, he talks negatively about things like Burger stands in the United States and saying that, how in China they have tea shops where you can sit and talk and interact and be social and Europe they have coffee shops where you can sit and talk and interact and be social, but in America we have Burger stands which force you to get in and get out quickly as possible. As if we don't have establishments in the United States where you can sit and talk and interact and be social, or that they don't have fast food restaurants in China they get you in and out the door as quick as possible.As I said I do like the book, I do appreciate and think he points out a lot of great things. I did write down a lot of things and take my own notes on a lot of things that he discussed and overall I'm very glad that I read it and I'll try to use the advice given.

I was introduced to this book as required reading for my yoga training certification. Not only did I love the book, but have bought several as gifts since reading it. It was a very easy to read, light-hearted and humorous, yet also contained deep philosophical ideas. The writing style is unique and entertaining and it is the perfect blend of entertaining and thought provoking content. As someone new to the ideas of Taoism, this book helps illustrate the major tenants in plain "layman's terms" even I could understand. Would be a great book for the vacation reader as well as the scholar. I think this book is suitable for readers of all ages, there is something to be gained for nearly every audience. I do not practice Taoism, however, the lessons in this book are applicable to nearly everyone living in our busy modern world. Definitely a great addition to your permanent library, I highly recommend.

Benjamin Hoff puts the teachings into the world and characters of Pooh and brings a unique way to understand what can be very difficult teachings to understand. This is my third purchase of this book, I wore the other two out. It's one of those books that you can read continuously, over and over, and keep learning new things every time.

It is a great story, but there is also a lot of practical advice. You have to root your organization in values and principles because if you have to think through every choice, you are killing valuable time. I liked the chapters on growing large, and feeling small. I liked the people focused dynamics. A lot of the topics translate into the church world well. If you are looking for a light read, this is a good book, and will make you think about your church culture too.

Although the book itself is great, this edition is CRAP!! The pictures, for which Howard Pyle was so famous, have been reproduced in some kind of cheap way so that they don't have ANY of the sharp, crisp lines of the original pictures!!!! Also, the type is TINY!!!! You'd need a magnifying glass to read it comfortably. So DO NOT waste your money on this large format, gray background book with an English castle on the cover. NO, NO, NO!!!!!

This is a nice new copy with a well-made sturdy cover. But I have NEVER seen such small print. There is nothing wrong with my eyesight and I have done a lot of reading in my life, but I will have a very difficult time reading this copy. I think that I will look to buy from another publisher instead of straining my eyes.

Howard Pyle's language is beautiful and draws a vision of a romantic era past. Recommended for any one young or old who enjoys a good tale and a look at not what once was, but what should have been

I have used all of Howard Pyle's books about King Arthur as read aloud books with my kids. My daughter (6) enjoys them as much as my son (8). They have become some of our favorite books. The language is beautiful. We have had to go to the dictionary at times for some of the words that are unfamiliar to us such as maugre, dolor, sucor etc. My two year old is frequently heard saying, "I'm Sir Lancelot of the Lake." We have enjoyed the King Arthur series so much that we hope to read all of Howard Pyle's books.

Enjoyed. Sad romantic tale.

Wonderful stories but slow reading due to the author's use of "olde English." There are also unfamiliar words included that even Kindle did not have a definition for. This book is a challenge, but if any reader is up for wading through these stories of chivalry then there is reward to be had. It would have been nice if the author had chosen modern usage, but he exercised his prerogative to make the book more "authentic." A fun read for those with patience and an interest in knights, knighthood and King Arthur's court.

I'm a web developer, not a DBA. However, I take my study of MySQL just as seriously as any other area of development. Any serious MySQL user should read this book, especially if you foresee the need to eventually scale your DB. The material is simply too deep and too dense to really absorb all this in one read. A broad spectrum of topics are covered from how clustered and non-clustered indexes are implemented, to replication, and various storage engines. I especially liked the coverage of storage engines including NDB Cluster, SolidDB, FalconDB, as well as the more traditional storage engines like MyISAM, InnoDB, archive, memory, blackhole etc. The coverage of things like Explain, Query Caching, Sharding, and other advanced topics is far more comprehensive than anything else I have found so far (most published mysql books are beginner to intermediate; few are advanced like this one). I have read this book once, and I plan to read it again...

This is obviously not a stand alone book on acquiring knowledge about mysql. It is a small piece in the puzzle of becoming a data expert.If you have read basic text books on mysql and other databases and still feel deprived or lacking of database knowledge. This book will help with optimizing your queries and making your web apps or IT system run much faster and efficient.On a side not, the world of data is changing almost every day. I would recommend learning about aws, hadoop hive, and other modern database systems that are becoming more widely used.

I work with MySQL in a web server environment every day and performanceis always an issue. This book is simply excellent. The authors are quite knowledgeable -- they not only tell you what settings to you, but also include why. They debunked a lot of misconceptions I held about getting the best performance out of the server and when to use MyISAM v. InnoDB.I especially appreciated the deep background into server operation and how data is stored and queries processed with the different storage engines. If you are thinking of using MySQL on a large project, you need this book.There's a good reason this is a 2nd edition -- a great book.

I have not finished reading book yet but I like it so far. I am nor expert neither newbie in MySQL. I like that authors decided to use common language to explain very complicated things. With help of practical examples they help me understand where each technology may be useful. They do not waste even a single page with impractical theory... they go deep in details only, when it may help make right decision which technology must be used. This book explains why MySQL team created it and what are positives and negatives of using them.

Nothing of real substance here. I was hoping for secrets, and explanations of each tuning option and it was pretty crappy honestly.

This is a must have book for any Mysql DBA who want to learn more about performance tuning beyond reading the explain plan. The only gripe I have is that aside from the Query Performance Optimization and Optimizing Server Settings section, the authors should have another section dealing specifically with Tuning Writes and Tuning Reads other than that it's an excellent book, it even includes snippets on Prepared statements which I used often along with stored procedures to optimize performance.

I got way more than I bargained for with this book. It goes into great detail on several ways to speed up and optimize MySQL. There are several chapters that I did not really need, but the ones I did were really good. I have implemented only a few changes and done testing and have seen increased performance from MySQL. Good book!

If you read the first edition and were underwhelmed, this is a vastly improved book. This second edition is entirely rewritten, more than twice as long, and covers a wide array of topics in depth, giving detailed advice and analysis in every chapter. The authors' advice on Innodb tuning, query optimization, and advanced replication issues is very strong. If you are responsible for a non-trivial MySQL installation, get this book.

Perfect reading material for a visit to Hilbert's Hotel (which has unlimited rooms and hence unlimited spaces in which to read), Eugenia Cheng's new book is an absolute delight. Cheng explores the bizarre implications of the infinite, and shows how not all infinities are the same. Her sense of humor is extraordinary and the examples highly imaginative, making the book a pleasure to read. For example, she compares the power of mathematicians to that of a spoiled child who must face the consequences of asking for (and promptly being eaten by) a pet lion; be careful what you wish for is the valuable lesson. Cheng makes mathematics seem so fun, I can imagine the book inspiring many young readers to pursue careers in the field. All in all, a book as entertaining as the works of Lewis Carroll.-Paul Halpern, author of The Quantum Labyrinth: How Richard Feynman and John Wheeler Revolutionized Time and Reality

I seem to be badly out of step with the current trend in popular science books. The chatty style in this one, including anecdotes from the author's personal life, did not grab me at all. I had the same feeling about a book on the fine structure constant, and my review on that has been poorly received. I have the same feeling about the two books: no worries at all about the expertise of the authors or the science contained in the books. Personally, though, I'd rather put the chat to one side and concentrate on the science. The other reviews of this book (and that) suggest that they are doing a good job in communicating science to the lay reader and I thoroughly approve of such an achievement. So, well done for that, and I'll face up to being out of step.

If you have an interest in mathematics and don't mind stretching your mind in unusual ways this is a great book

This book gets pretty abstract at times, and the examples that the author provides are not very good at providing clarity. (Maybe there is no way to make this topic clear though to non-mathematics folks). Having majored in mathematics in college, the book made sense to me and I understood most if not all. The Hilbert Hotel example which I have read about before was well described. However, the chapter on dimensions in mathematics was not very useful or interesting. Einstein has pretty much proven that the fourth dimension is time with his theory of relativity and the examples in this chapter were kind of lame. I would suggest that only those folks who have studied math and are interested in math should read this book.

I got about 40 pages in and found it kind of boring. I am an engineer by profession, so it wasn't a distaste for math that made me feel that way -- I just felt she was taking too long to build up to the points she was trying to make.

Eugenia Cheng’s book on infinity is a delightful, deceptively sophisticated introduction to math’s most mind-bending topic. It covers ground that math lovers will find familiar (e.g., Zeno’s paradoxes, Cantor’s theory of transfinite numbers, diverging and converging series, Hilbert’s Hotel, Dedekind and Cantor’s constructions of real numbers). But its artful explanations are highly original—Cheng has a rare knack for translating challenging mathematical abstractions into easily-grasped terms through the use of concrete metaphors and down-to-earth analogies. In one of my favorite examples, she deftly elucidates the strange nature of infinite ordinal numbers by describing the key ideas involved in terms of the amount of hassle involved in accommodating extra guests at an infinitely large hotel. (The Hilbert.) I was also charmed by her explanations of exponential growth in terms of puff pastry (and I learned some interesting baking lore along the way), by her referring to the iPod Shuffle to explain factorial growth, and by her explanation of how to make an infinitely long line of cookies with a (weirdly) finite amount of dough. Superb analogies like these are invaluable for helping non-experts get their minds around math concepts, and dreaming them up requires a special talent for isolating the essence of abstract ideas and figuring out how to put them in familiar terms. (Which I know from personal experience is a lot harder than it looks.) Few writers on math I’ve run across are as good at this as Cheng. I found her book almost shockingly readable, and she engagingly conveys her sense of delight about the mathematical enterprise throughout—it’s baked with joy.

When I read in the introduction that the author works in the area of category theory, I got all excited thinking that the tale would eventually lead there. Nope, that is the last we hear about category theory. the rest of the book does not even cover what I heard about infinity during my first year of college. A few of Cheng's metaphors are indeed useful for illustrating some aspects of the subject, but I was hoping to find out something new about infinity, and there I was left feeling short-changed.
