Was a very good read on the lives of the Transgendered community.

There are few surprises in this report for those of us who have been allies or activists for many years, but this book is the best I have seen so far to help those outside our community understand transgender at least a little better. It should be required reading in all gender studies courses.Fortunately, the authors use the term transgender in it's broadest meaning. One surprising result of their study is expressed as follows: "In our survey, respondents offered more than a hundred different descriptions for their gender identity besides the traditional categories of men, women, and transgender." Many, or perhaps most, of these unique categories are somewhere under the relatively new category genderqueer.This is the most difficult of all for those of us who have spent much of our lives in a binary world. We understand male and female. We may even understand transition from female to male or male to female, although it may be outside our personal experience. It is the hundreds of "in-between" genders that are difficult to understand. If you share this puzzlement, "Nina Here Nor There" by Nick Krieger (available at Amazon.com) is an outstanding book by a transgender writer whose experience places them firmly in the genderqueer category somewhat on the male side of the middle between male and female.Authors Beemyn and Rankin do a pretty good job of explaining this category through exposition and anecdotal segments quoted from survey participants. The size of their survey group (about 3500 respondents) provides a higher statistical probability to their conclusions. The breadth of their survey - incorporating diversity in gender, ethnicity, race, and religion - further validates that transgender is endemic to all populations.I heartily recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand the path our transgender friends have taken - or will take - in their lives.

When Geeny Beemyn and Susan Rankin set out to conduct a study of transgender people in the United States, they did something most people writing about transgender never do: they listened. They invited thousands of people to participate in surveys and to "self-identify," whether it was as transgender, transvestite, genderqueer, androgyne, drag queen or any other variation that described a gender identity other than binary male or female and in keeping with the gender one was assigned at birth. They also included people who used to identify as transgender but no longer did (as in the case of MTF or FTM transgenders who no longer identified as transgender after gender reassignment). By casting a wide net and allowing people to self-identify, the authors include voices often not heard in other studies, particularly among young people. I have almost every book Lieberman has written and I love his fairly simple explanations, and his occasionally funny commentary to go along with his explanation. It helps break up what would otherwise be very dry reading.

It's fine.

This is a great book for practicing process engineers, especially young engineers just beginning their careers. It contains a large number of different topics with real world examples and in-the-field, practical application shortcuts.

This is the 3rd or 4th Lieberman book I purchased and probably the best. Though there is significant overlap with other books of his, the additional material and the way it is presented make purchasing the book certainly worth it. This book is very different than Alberto's previous works. In "The Heart of the Shaman" he leads the shamanic reader away from their "conventional tools" of healing, ie, the illumination, soul retrieval, etc and onto the path of deep introspection and the sacred dream. Through personal anectdote and story Alberto teaches that mastering one's fearlessness of death and impermanence, practicing gratitude in everyday life, and becoming love are the truest and perhaps, the most powerful medicine of the shaman. "The Heart of the Shaman" is a page turner and quick read with a profound and life changing message. I would highly recommend it.

This writing has moved me as it should and could move you the reader. It is a rare book, a rare writer who can move one into and perhaps, through difficult points in their life. A cause to rekon with. I wish to thank Alberto for the many gifts he has so brilliantly brought forth to this world of ours.

The book was so very helpful. I completed training with The Four Winds Society - Dr. Villoldo - back in 2008 - and have been using my Shaman training ever since. I died in an auto accident in 1976 - with much damage to my body and brain - I obviously survived. Becoming a Shaman was my salvation. However, this past year I had a "crisis of faith" - caught up too much in the world as it is. I was hospitalized and almost died - from fear alone. I have been struggling for the past 6 months to get back on the firm footing I once had. The Heart of the Shaman helped me get over that last big hurdle - fear - of death. The meditation in the book which has you asking yourself "What dies?" and "Will I die" - changed my life. The answers that came to me were totally unexpected, but snapped me back into living. Thank you Dr. VIlloldo. This book is well worth reading and rereading.

I especially liked what Dr Villoldo said about giving up the notion of a soul mate, being perfect, and a God who only loves us when we are “do what is right”. That topic on transferring the dream is right on. I am a doctor of chiropractic and I shared that with 50 people the next day who I treated and the information helped them tremendously! All his books are beautifully written. This one is a special offering and if you allow it, just like a shaman ceremony, it will help you do “Soul Retrieval” for yourself. I had a major transformation from this book.

Raised by Sudan's Dinka tribe, the Deng brothers and their cousin Benjamin were all under the age of seven when they left their homes after terrifying attacks on their villages during the Sudanese civil war. In 2001, the three were relocated to the U.S. from Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp as part of an international refugee relief program. Arriving in this country, they immediately began to fill composition books with the memoirs of chaos and culture shock collected here. Well written, often poetic essays by Benson, Alepho and Benjamin, who are now San Diego residents in their mid-20s, are arranged in alternating chapters and recall their childhood experiences, their treacherous trek and their education in the camp ("People were learning under trees"). Other pieces remember the rampant disease and famine among refugees, and the tremendous hardship of day-to-day living ("Refugee life was like being devoured by wild animals"). When the boys arrived in America, Benson, upon seeing a Wal-Mart for the first time, remarked, "This is like a king's palace." Although some readers may wish for more commentary on what life in America is like for these transplants, this collection is moving in its depictions of unbelievable courage. First off, I want to say that anyone looking for an autobiographical read should get their hands on this book!! This book explains the long, treacherous journey that these three young men were forced to embark on. Leaving their villages behind in Southern Sudan due to the Second Sudanese Civil War, these boys illustrate the hardships and difficulties they themselves endured as well as thousands of others. In search of refuge these three boys were split up multiple times until they all ended up in a camp in Kenya. Fortunately all three of these young men were able to fly to America where they became a part of a program called the Lost Boys of Sudan to have a new life in America. Unfortunately, many girls didn't make it because they were usually in the house whereas boys were usually out in the fields and were able to escape once the war broke out. I highly encourage all to read this book!!

I became involved with a group like this from 2000-2004. It is an amazing act of courage to tell the story. The stories in this book parallel stories my friends told me first hand.The assistance they received upon arrival was desperately inadequate. Most found horrible minimum wage jobs. Many moved around from job to job without much stability. And I would say although very charming, most were unable initially to be valuable employees. They needed much more than just a few months or weeks to adjust.I remember going into an apartment in the winter and realizing they hadn't turned on the heat. Why? They didn't know it existed. They didn't know how to draw the blinds. Or use the stove. They didn't know that there was hot and cold water... Important if you plan to shower in the winter especially. And despite that, life was so much better than where they came from.Anything that increases the understanding of and compassion for these young men should be required reading..

This is a remarkable story about the strength of the human spirit. It gives one a better appreciation for the freedoms we have here in America. It is a story of faith having been tried by fire.I tells in gripping detail about the lives of 3 young boys escaping from the civil war in Sudan and all of the horrifying things they had to face on their escape southern Sudan to Ethiopia, and back and then to Kenya.They had to cross dangerous rivers and desserts, live in and out of refugee camps. Despite everything, they had to endure they managed to hang on to their humanity, sacrificing and helping others.The story even sheds some light on the unfortunate amount of corruption that prevents a lot of humanitarian aid from reaching those in need.After reading this one simply cannot help being so impressed with the boys' courage and perseverance in the face of everything happening to them.

I am in 9th grade and i was forced to read this book for honors english, and honestly I'm glad I was forced. The book is so inspiring and interesting as they talk about their years of walking not knowing if they were going to die the next day. It teaches you not to take anything for granted not your house, your family, food, even personal items. It also teaches you about the horrible war happening in sudan. I recomend that you purchase this book and learn about people who have almost nothing but still have hope in their sad world.

This book contains an amazing story- one ALL older children should read and adults as well. Seeing what these LITTLE boys as well as all the other Sudanese people went through will shock you and hopefully change the way you think about things. We complain about so many little things like the crack in our iPhone screen, or gas prices, or the fact that they are out of our favorite ice cream. These boys were surrounded by death, fear, poverty, and terrible conditions during a time of unspeakable terror for many people. They endured hardships and came out the other end and are creating a better life for themselves. The way they wrote their stories makes the book an easy read although it may bring tears to your eyes!! I have rotated it between each of my teenage children- knowing they need to see what life can be like for some many others. READ this ... It will be a story that will stay with you forever...
