The author argues that these dreams can bring guidance and inspiration to achieve what might otherwise seem impossible.The author offers advice on how to get the most information out of your dreams, what the most common dream themes are and what they mean, how to discover the real message hidden in your dreams, examples of other people's life changing dreams, and how to remember your dreams more clearly.I find this topic interesting, as it's part science, part spiritual and part almost mysticism. After offering an interpretation, the book also offers suggested actions for resolving a situation in your life, or questions to ask yourself about what is going on that might need changing. About the Author

Richard Lytle is the local history librarian at the Hammond Public Library and an officer of the Hammond Historical Society. He has previously published two books on military history, The Soldiers of America's First Army: 1791 and The Old Guard in 1898, and has been eager to write this book since taking on his post at the library eight years ago and gaining access to its collection of unpublished train wreck photos.

For as much information as the author compiled, you would think that the narrative would be gripping. Instead, it turned out to be a dud.What Richard M. Lytle accomplished was writing a detailed account of the origins of Hammond, Indiana and a chronicle of railroad activities through the area. The book is small at a mere 99 pages, and at least half of that had little to do with the incident.However, it served as a good point of origin for the further research on this subject. If you know very little about it, it's a good primer. If you are familiar with circus history and railroad history, you could probably skip this book. It was a detached viewpoint, dry narrative and poorly edited. Instead, we are left thinking, "what might have been" if a better writer had access to the same information as Lytle did.

This tragic tale of a circus train catastrophe seems to be relatively unknown outside the area in which it occurred. It's a very short book and the actual train accident only accounts for a few pages. The beginning of the book is heavy on detail about the rail system and the budding towns alongside the railway. There is of course some history about the forging of this particular circus and the reader learns a little about the circus members themselves. The last portion of the book describes improvements in rail cars since the accident. My rating of a 3 is really more generous than I'd typically give a book that only superficially discussed the event itself. However, it would seem callous to judge a book about the horrific loss of life and the devastation of countless families on quality of writing alone.

Warren Reeder's "No Performances Today", from about 1970 is a vastly better treatment of this subject -- in particular what happened to the survivors, and to the estates of those killed or maimed for life, in the decade-long aftermath. This shows me a highly biased slant in favor of the Michigan Central railroad, and an indefensible court/jury decissions. You can read Reeder's book via intra-library loan from the library in Dallas, Texas.Here I am again three years later, and I'll try to amplify the above. Although the historical review of early beginnings around Hammond, Indiana is informative, the treatment of the train wreck itself and it's aftermath is appalling, especially in view of the Interstate Commerce Commission report and Warren Reeder's book. Both are abundantly clear in showing who was at fault, here, and who bore the responsibility for restitution: The Michigan Central Railroad. They paid a few dollars north of zero, for the horrific loss of life and employability, to say nothing of those killed. To a veteran railroader, Lytle's book reads like a revisionist cover-up of the Michigan Central's callous treatment of the victims. Since the MEC is long defunct, absorbed by the New York Central and then Conrail, this book's content leaves one dumbstruck that a modern writer would write something so, so unnecessary. Just read the recorded comments of Alonzo Sargent, locomotive engineer, Michigan Central.

A tragic story, and a must read for those who loved/love the circus. It is incredibly touching and a book that will hold your interest from beginning to end.

Great review of a forgotten piece of history.

This book was very interesting and well researched. It is about a part of Lake County Indiana history that many people do not have much knowledge about. The author's writing made it very easy to understand what the circus was like at the time of the crash and how, exactly, this crash happened. I learned a lot and enjoyed reading it which is all you can ask for.

I've read a LOT of books about women in business and the issues we face in progressing (or not progressing) in our careers. Susan's book is one of my favorites. It's packed with both theory and practical examples that bring all the issues to life. She's open about her own areas of development - she makes herself vulnerable to her readers by saying, "I'm an expert and I'm still wrestling with some of the issues I write about. I think what I like most about the book is that Susan puts the responsibility for women's advancement clearly at our own doorstep - none of this glass ceiling whining, but rather just practical advice for the things as women we need to do to take charge of our own development. It's a must-read for male leaders as well because it will help understand the female psyche and the issues with which even the most senior and talented women often wrestle. This book was purchased for me, having taken a large step up in my career. I do not typically read business or leadership books but I did find it easy to read, the author was relatable and it was not filled with business jargon or above the understanding of someone not in the business world. I’d recommend this book to other leaders, regardless of their field.

Overall, I've been happy with Fodor's Travel books, but I was very disappointed in this one. I was interested in information on nature attractions and activities in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Western Maine. The book provides very little of that, nothing that I didn't already find on the web, but rather a bunch of information about lodging and restaurants.

This book was a great help for us while visiting the New England States. Since we weren't sure what we wanted to see or where to visit, we paged through this book and ended up seeing much more then we would have without using the book. We had a great vacation.

Such helpful articles about where to go!! This will be packed into our bags for our trip this fall!!

I took a year of calculus in college, several decades ago. Now I need to get my calculus skills back, because my job requires it (something I never imagined would happen).I began by taking an online alegbra class--turns out that was a really good decision. I then took an online calculus course, one of the easier ones, and eventually bombed out. It moved too fast and was just too much for me.I've bought several books to try to remedy the situation, and I think this has been the best one so far. I really, really like the straightforward explanations. Maybe, if I hadn't already struggled with a caclculus course, this book wouldn't seem so straightforward to me. I can't say. But I think that, at the very least, this would serve as a great companion to a calculus course.It does not have lots of practice problems, and if you want to progress, you really need plenty of practice. So I don't think this can serve as a standalone way to learn calculus. But you could probably gain a lot by reading the various chapters of this book before reading the corresponding chapters in a more traditional, more comprehensive, more confusing calculus textbook.I'm about halfway through the book now, almost to the point where it begins coverage of integration. I have definitely deepened my familiarity with differential calculus thanks to this book. Well worth the modest purchase price.The book assumes that your algebra and trig skills are pretty much up to snuff. If they're not, you will probably not be able to get much use out of this, or any, calculus text.UPDATE: I've now read the chapter introducing integrals and I'm raising my review from four to five stars. This doesn't change the fact that this is a very limited, brief book, and probably won't make a very good standalone way to learn calculus. But the clear, simple way in which integrals are introduced is almost perfect. I could think of a few ways to improve phrasing, and provide additional examples, but by the time I had read this chapter, I really "got it" on what an integral is, and why it's so important. I can now "see" how an integral works in my mind.If you're taking a calculus course and struggling, I can't recommend this book as a secondary resource highly enough. I'm also pairing it with Schaum's 3000 Solved Problems in Calculus, as well as videos at Khan Academy, which give me lots and lots of practice. I'm moving very slowly, but I feel that, unlike when I was trying to keep up with a course, I am absorbing the concepts deeply, and so they will really stick. If I had done this before taking the course, I'm pretty sure I would be cruising easily through the course now, or maybe tackling the "challenge" problems.

This is a great text for someone who has already had Calculus or as a review text for someone who is CURRENTLY taking a Calculus course. The writing is crisp and to the point without the baloney found in many of the modern glitzy tomes. I use it often to brush up on concepts that have long faded away. My suggestion would be to use this text as review material ALONG WITH a full fledged textbook like "Technical Calculus With Analytic Geometry" by Gersting.

My son attends one of the US Service Academies... He has used this book to help crystalize what he knows and fill in a few gaps. So far he reports having "aced" all his quizzes. We have yet to see how he does on his final, but if the quizzes are any indicator, he is on the right track. He sent me a photo of his desk on which he has a place for all his "Frequently used Reference Books." The "Calculus Essentials" and other essential books "For Dummies" are stacked neatly for easy access. Apparently his room mate uses them regularly, as well. Thanks for creating these books and making the shipping so easy.

Very easy to follow. Studying Calc and Analytical Geometry (MTH-131) and this makes the subject way more approachable and easy to grasp. I'd recommend this to anyone looking at calculus as it's a night and day difference.

I was a math major and my masters is math oriented. I helped my sister-in-law when she went back to college in 1987, but haven't used calculus since. This was a great refresher so that I could help my grandkids through their high school calculus. Great, quick refresher.I will say that I also purchased The Calculus Lifesaver by Adrian Banner in hard copy. It gives me a great reference for more complicated problems. This book just got me started and The Calculus Lifesaver keeps me going.

I have downloaded a number of samples from the various Calculus books offered on Kindle, hoping to refresh my knowledge of Calculus. I took Calculus in college and did very well in it, but never understood what I was doing. That may sound strange, but I was able to conquer the abstract motions of solving problems without having a clue why and was able to get all "A"s through all of differentiation and integration problems. I wanted to finally find a book that could explain simply what all those exercise were about. This book does it nicely. None of the other Calculus books came close to explaining it in simple words with diagrams that made sense. I just wish it didn't call itself Calculus for Dummies. I don't think I am a dummy!?!

Some of the formulas are images. I had to select the image and enlarge it to read it. I recommend the hardcopy but not the Kindle version.

This book was really helpful for me. I am taking Differential Equations right now and my Calculus I and II skills had gotten rusty. If you have already taken Calc I and II then this book will help you blow through what you have already learned, quickly. I would also recommend this to anyone who has yet to take Calc I or II. This book breaks things down into simple, human terms. I bought other Calculus for Dummy books and I am sure they are good too, but this thing gets you up to speed much faster. Hope this helps.

It was not long ago that I treated an irrepressible 8 year old boy at the children's hospital where I worked. This kid was something else. He was smart, articulate and bubbly. We got to talking about books, and I told him about Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' (one of my long-standing favourites by that author). "Have you read Captain Underpants?" he asked me. Then he proceeded to regale me with the story of Mr Krupp and Harold and George. I was intrigued.At the follow-up appointment, my patient brought me one of his own copies of Captain Underpants, so I could see what he was going on about. I promised him the next time he came for an appointment, I would have read the whole series. His mom told me later, "You're the only doctor here who's willing to read Captain Underpants. You're doing pretty well."And here I am. I read Captain Underpants and I thoroughly loved it. It is one of the most banned books in libraries in the US, which probably goes to show you that it is extremely effective at engaging its target audience. I laughed in delight, reading the adventures of Harold and George, and remembered all the childhood hours I spent with my brother thinking up practical jokes that landed us in trouble again and again. I remembered the stink bombs, the fart spray, the whoopee cushions, and simply remembered what it was like to be a kid.I have read a few of the reviews that express concern that the series encourages defiance of authority, but I have several points to make in response. Firstly, the authority figures in the book should be challenged. Quite frankly, if kids had to attend a school where the principal punished naughty behaviour by making them clean his house and mow his lawn, I would mount a protest. That is a highly inappropriate punishment. Secondly, I seriously doubt that reading Captain Underpants is going to turn a kid into a criminal or miscreant of the justice system. If you really looked at the kinds of things that turn kids into criminals, reading books is not one of them. Thirdly, Captain Underpants was wonderfully imaginative. It turns mundane things into objects of great potential (nefarious or otherwise). I love that it encourages kids to dream and imagine, and not be confined by the dictates of our time. If not for challenging ideas, we wouldn't know that the earth revolved around the sun, or that gravity makes apples fall to the ground, or that spores from a fungus (penicillin) could be critical in treating infection.Let's let kids enjoy being kids. Heaven knows, growing up isn't much fun. And for the love of all that is cotton-y and pre-shrunk, if they love the Captain, let them read it.

Around when I was in third grade and all the other kids were reading these books, I was very hesitant to read these books and didn't want anything to do with them. About four years later I saw the first trailer for the Captain Underpants movie and didn't think it would really be worth seeing. A few months later I started watching the trailer nonstop and searched YouTube for every possible scene in the movie. A couple of days later I decided that before I saw the movie itself that I should read as many of the books I could so that I wouldn't have to handle the wait much longer. Ten minutes later I finished the first epic novel.I bet you're wondering why my opinion on these novels changed so suddenly. You see, once I saw a trailer for the movie saying that the critics thought it was heartwarming, far more emotional then you'd ever believe, and about the power of friendship and imagination, I immediately fell in love with it. I became absolutely hypnotized by every trailer I saw on TV just like how Mr. Krupp became hypnotized by George's and Harold's ring. I then saw that it got 85% by Rotten Tomatoes and was astonished.The main reason why I fell in love with this franchise in the first place was because I thought it could possibly teach me something about friendship and what it means to truly have a best friend at your side at all times, since I didn't currently have a best friend at my side at all times like everyone else in school did.When I first read this book, I couldn't stop smiling at how close George and Harold seemed to be and just how clever they were with all their pranks. Overall, I don't think I'll ever stop reading these books anytime soon and that I'd recommend it to every child out there and not just the ones in the lower grades. I mean, I was thirteen when I first started reading these books and I'm even a girl! Also, whatever you do, don't be hesitant to read these books no matter how many there are! Trust me, you'll be surprised and humored by what you read in these novels.

This book is great! As a 12 year old, I'm obviously pretty old to be reading this book, but when I was younger, I read this book, and it definitely helped me love to read. I think that this book falls in the 3rd-4th grade age level.Some of the other reviews said that this book would make you hate school and make you say potty talk and stuff. Some even said it woul make your kid a "juvinile delinquet"... (not sure if I spelled that correctly). Anyway, I'm proud to say that (though I can't help the potty talk, but what type of kid can?) I have sraight A's, and I am very good at sports, though I don't know how that has much to do with anything!Anyway, I think that the main characters, George and Harold, are very clever and funny. They must be good at english and art too if they make comic books. I wish my school had signs where you can switch around the letters! Read the book and you will know what I'm talking about.Mr. Krupp is the perfect villian. He actually turns into "the greatest superhero of all time" with a 3-D Hypno Ring. Now the villian has turned into a hero, gets into lots of trouble, and George and Harold have lots of adventures.New villians show up through the series, and George and Harold fight them off. The wisecracks make this book halarious. There is also some random grown-up humor! The stories are not too complicated, and the comics are supercool!As a kid, I suggest to other kids to read this book. You will laugh. If you don't want to act like a kid, if you want to be all grown-upy, I don't know what's wrong with you, but I think that this book is totally worth reading. If you are 8 years old or 100, you will still love this book so much!!Wow, I must admit I'm proud of that last speech!
