I've been through this text now several times for private reading and for teaching classes on Arthur specifically and medieval studies generally.This book affords very good prose translations of Chretien's romances, from which both I and my students profited. The notes and introduction are quite sound. But something is clearly lost when verse is lost. I understand full well that there are serious complications when translating from the verse of another language into English (which has its own maddening complications, starting with its bizarre irregularities), but I sense something is lost, terribly lost, when the stories are not presented in verse.While they will cost you a good bit more than this volume, there are very fine verse translations available both from the U.Ga. press and from the Yale U. press.So a sensible strategy for the Arthurian seeker or scholar would be to start with this modestly priced volume and then move on to the verse translations.

This collection is one of the most important primary texts that informs Arthurian lore. The translation feels more contemporary but doesn't sacrifice essential material that makes the original text so important to Arthurian studies. One also gets very unique judgments of round table figures. Chretien's account of Lancelot is probably the most damning retelling of Arthur's most famous knight's fall from his king's favor. The book is worth it for the chronicling of the Lancelot/Guinevere episode, perhaps the most intricate detailing and morally focussed interpretation of the legend, whose judgmental tone continues to inform new incarnations of the affair portion of Arthurian mythos.In addition to the important Lancelot story, Chretien's stories provide a very lucid glimpse of both artistic and broadly cultural views of these staple romances, along with a crucial view into the changing nature of written accounts of legendary material that was in flux soon after the tales were put to paper. The writing is particularly subtle, in the spirit of Sir Gawain's romance. On a personal note, I used to be quite involved in tales about Arthur but felt I lost my fire for the subject. Chretien de Troyes reignited that fire for me.

I had to read parts of this book for philosophy class one semester. I went back and reread the whole book. Very enjoyable. I love those short stories and all that they encompass. Filled with love, action, lessons, and everything in between. I don't like how the last book wasn't finished, but there's nothing to change that...

Having never read Chretien de Troyes before, I found that I was delighted with the work which is a delightful, swift moving presentation of Arthurian materials.

The book is exactly how it was presented, received in time and is in good condition. I am totally satisfied.

Got it for school, but I'm not too big on romances so maybe I'm biased. I'm trying.It's a pretty good story...actually a set of stories written by this Troyes guy, all about everyone except noble King Arthur. Gotta buy a different book to get the sword in the stone story. Great for in depth details on the romance-period view of the barbarian Arthurian story, and even better for writing a detailed paper on it.If you're into Arthurian stories (and already know the story lines of the main story but want more on the offshoots and the only-mentioned-once characters like Yvain) this is a great book for you! Not good for people who don't know the story. Watch the disney movie first for some background or read the Mists of Avalon (long but good).

I had to get this book for a college class. While it wasn't my favorite book to read, it wasn't terrible either. The quality of the book was great and it arrived on time.

First, a word of warning - most of these recipes you can get free online at America's Test Kitchen The Feed (AmericasTestKitchenFeed [dot] com). I was unaware of that when I ordered the book, so I just paid for a book of recipes that I already had for free and was very disappointed. THIS WAS MY MISTAKE AND WILL NOT AFFECT MY RATING.With that said, it's a good book. If you are the type of person that prefers to have all of your recipes in a book instead of a digital copy, I recommend getting it. If you're a kitchen geek like I am and would love to learn how to make your own root beer and cured meats, the America's Test Kitchen DIY Cookbook provides a nice foundation. It is very basic and touches on a few different topics like pickled vegetables, jams and jellies, homemade nutella, and charcuterie. It had only a handful of recipes for each topic and doesn't go into any great depth about each item.I think that it might be a good book to give you an idea what each preparation is like and help you decide if you would like to learn more about each topic.

I was about to not buy this book because another review told me that all of these recipes are available for free on the America's Test Kitchen Feed site. That was a great tip and review because I never knew about that site before and it was a great find. However, when I started to look at what was available online and what was in this book (according to the description) I noticed that a lot of the recipes in this book where not online. I ended up buying the book and am really happy I did. This book has a lot more recipes than are available online.I just made pickled beets with this book and I had never pickled or canned a thing in my life. I was a bit intimidated but when I read through the instructions they laid things out so simply. It was easy to follow and I ended up having a great, easy time. The recipe started out with a story about how the recipe came to be and why each step is there. This is really great if you want to make any deviations from the recipe. This doesn't just give you straight instructions on how to replicate what they made, but really explains to you why each step is there and what it does for the whole process. FYI the beets turned out tasty!

It is great fun to make everyday products, and try to put my own spin on some old favorites.I strongly urge people who like to cook to try their hand at DIY for ordinary products like mustard. This is America's Home Kitchen's great starter book that I have used to make many different products. Often I don't save any money, but it is a real joy to share a new spin on mustard, for example, that no one else in the world can buy.Here is the basic mustard recipe, simple eh?Sock the mustard seeds in a liquid — vinegar, plus if desired beer, wine, cider or water — for 24 hours.For a smooth mustard, skip the soaking and start with ground mustard powder and whisk in the liquid.Second, blend in a food processor.Optional: add flavorings -- sweeteners, herbs, or spices.Let it meld for awhile, a day, a week, a month, in the refrigerator. Taste and serve, or pitch and try again.You will discover many, many variations over time, and America's Home Kitchen will lead your way, if you wish.Robert C. RossNovember 2018

I heard about this when NPR interviewed two of the contributing authors. I only caught the end of the program, but I was sold on the super-simple strawberry jam recipe they mentioned. I tried a sample of the book on my Kindle (which actually included a recipe or two, not like the usual "samples" that only include 2 pgs of a foreward) and decided to buy the paper edition. I've since made about 10 batches of jam (I'll never eat store-bought again, and it really is incredibly simple), just made the apple butter (had to hide it in the back of the fridge so I don't eat the whole jar at once), and have ordered supplies to make vanilla extract for Christmas gifts. And the book is covered in post-it bookmarks marking "need to try" recipes. Yes, a lot of the recipes could be easily found elsewhere on the internet for free, but I find that when cooking from Americas Test Kitchen recipes I can feel pretty confident that they'll turn out well. The color step-by-step photos are great, and recipes are grouped and organized well. There are recipes in here for things that I had no idea could be made at home; there are relatively easy recipes for a novice as well as involved and technical recipes for those looking for a challenge. I'm pretty sure that no matter what your skill level or taste or sense of culinary adventure you'll be able to find something in here that'll excite you. And because many of the recipes are for things that are usually expensive and hard-to-find gourmet items, there are lots of things that would make great handmade gifts for the holidays.

I love ATK and Cook's Illustrated books that I purchase (or get as a gift) most of there books. I was excited to see the DIY book and was not disappointed. I hope they make a DIY 2 and give recipes for curing olives. I have one recipe but can't find any others and I usually make them in the 50 lb batches. Everybody wants them and can't believe that I cure them myself.So PLEASE ATK AND COOK'S ILLUSTRATED please do a recipe or two on curing olives...both green and black.Your biggest fan.

I guess if I have one compliant it is it should be thicker and cover more recipes. Pickled daikon and sag panneer (sp) didn't make the cut. However, it's a great book for learning all those odd skills that used to be part of cooking. I've been making bacon, pickling, playing at cheese making and brewing for a bit and this book would have been a great help when we started. For one, it has color pictures of steps for each project and very detailed instructions. It's not as good as having Dad or Grandma teach you to do it, but they are better than anything else I've seen and it covers a lot of ground. The book touches on fermentation, pickling, cheese-making, etc so you get an idea of the range of things to do as well as how complicated they are. It's definitely a keeper.

Teacher Sara is a sexual predator and has decided she’s going to make seemingly innocent Jess her prey. After reading a very naughty and dirty letter that Jess has written to her Mistress, she realizes that maybe jess isn’t as innocent as she originally thought,I kind of thought given the title of the story and the characters themselves, there would’ve been more overlap between the two women. But as it happens, since this is the first book in the series, you are seeing their separate worlds and how the two women fit into their own worlds. This is dual POV as each chapter switches between Sara and Jess. I liked that the story was dark, but I had a hard time with Jess’ character. Given what she’s going through and how she feels; I would’ve appreciated just a little bit of a beginning of a back-story for her so I could empathize with the situation she’s in. One that doesn’t really appear to be totally consensual. I do feel bad for her character but because I don’t have any inkling as to why she would remain in the situation she’s in, with no apparent reason, I just ended up having a hard time caring because it seemed so trite. I may end up reading the next installments in the future, if they end up being free, but as of right now I’m just not into the story enough to continue.

Great start to what I hope to be a delicious series. Truly enjoy how each chapter is told from the point of view of a specific character. It is always nice to know how the other side feels good in the storyline. BDSM lesbian themes are my favorites. The fact that this writer is taking you on a trip to some of the darker desires in an intimate way with respect is greatly appreciate.

A high school girl is a slave to a mean mistress who rents her out to members of a club. But one of her high school teachers has a crush on her. Too one sided for my taste

It was ok. Not what I expected.

Different, but entertaining

I'm not sure why this ended up in my Unlimited recommended queue, it's classified as Horror and I've never downloaded a KU horror book. Anyway I got it and figured, "Here come's a one star." Wrong. It's actually a really good story. I would not categorize it as horror. I'm guessing the publisher did because they are trying to avoid the ban hammer if they called it erotica. The thing is it's actually pretty standard D/s fare, maybe even on the tame side compared to what I've seen. So if you see it and think "Ick, horror," don't.Most of the book consensual. Not even "seduced into consent" it's "Yes I know going in I want this" consent. There is one very short scene at the end that is not one hundred percent consensual, but isn't written to be erotic and isn't sexualized. It's written to demonstrate a dysfunctional relationship. I've read stuff in the "Romance" category -without the erotica filter- with more violent non-consensual explicit sex than this story has.The sex is written from the internal emotional view of the characters. It's not simply descriptions of their plumbing, Quite frankly I would call it a Dark Romance without even the erotica filter because it's about the character's feelings and search for someone to share their "quirks' with. Not just about getting a good boinking in.The loss of one star is because the author has a problem with capitalization and dialogue punctuation. The book should be edited to show titles used in place of proper names are capitalized. "Yes, Mistress.". And when a statement is followed by the action of speaking the statement - "Hi," Bob said; they should be separated by a comma, not a period. The two issues are tiny bit distracting but the story telling overcomes them easily.Other than those issues the story moves at a good pace, tension builds as we learn about the two protagonists. It's not just a race to see how fast they can be tossed into bed with each other. Some of the supporting characters have meat on their bones and aren't just cardboard cutouts. A couple are just named placeholders. But again, not a big distraction from the story.

I love the story looking forward to how it ends. I've waited two years for the ending or maybe just the beginning.

We are expecting our first child in early 2017 and picked up this book as we are starting to think about wills and guardianship. I expected to maybe get one or two good tidbits out of it, but I can easily say it was the most important book I read this year. Perfect for someone who has some very basic understanding but no experience of estate planning. This book touches on several important topics and is a good jumping off point for further reading or discussions with a lawyer. Very glad that I read it and will certainly keep it for referencing, as many topics will also apply further down the road.

This book is brief, clear, organized, and exactly what we were looking for to prep for our first Estate Planning session. If you are looking to do complicated things with taxes, this is probably not the book for you. This is the "Monarch Review Book" of estate planning. The chapters are identified in a way that one only needs to read relevant information, and not overload on irrelevant issues.It is therefore not at all daunting.......

I enjoyed reading this book. It had good information and was written in a pretty simple and straight forward easy to understand manner. The personal examples the author used from her friends experiences were a nice touch also. It seems to be a little more focused on people who are fairly wealthy and providing advice and guidance on how to avoid estate tax pitfalls that most people would never have to worry about. But it does have good general information on a variety of topics. I would recommend it to friends and family.

Written like a "For Dummies" book, cutesy and slow to get to the point. Difficult to skip what's irrelevant for your situation and get to what you need.

Good and clear information to get an all round education. Actually I was looking for a book just on Revocable Living Trust. It has a valuable page on what none US citizen can and cannot do.

Many ideas to consider and address to craft an estate plan before visiting an attorney. More than worth the price,

For as much information as the author compiled, you would think that the narrative would be gripping. Instead, it turned out to be a dud.What Richard M. Lytle accomplished was writing a detailed account of the origins of Hammond, Indiana and a chronicle of railroad activities through the area. The book is small at a mere 99 pages, and at least half of that had little to do with the incident.However, it served as a good point of origin for the further research on this subject. If you know very little about it, it's a good primer. If you are familiar with circus history and railroad history, you could probably skip this book. It was a detached viewpoint, dry narrative and poorly edited. Instead, we are left thinking, "what might have been" if a better writer had access to the same information as Lytle did.

This tragic tale of a circus train catastrophe seems to be relatively unknown outside the area in which it occurred. It's a very short book and the actual train accident only accounts for a few pages. The beginning of the book is heavy on detail about the rail system and the budding towns alongside the railway. There is of course some history about the forging of this particular circus and the reader learns a little about the circus members themselves. The last portion of the book describes improvements in rail cars since the accident. My rating of a 3 is really more generous than I'd typically give a book that only superficially discussed the event itself. However, it would seem callous to judge a book about the horrific loss of life and the devastation of countless families on quality of writing alone.

Warren Reeder's "No Performances Today", from about 1970 is a vastly better treatment of this subject -- in particular what happened to the survivors, and to the estates of those killed or maimed for life, in the decade-long aftermath. This shows me a highly biased slant in favor of the Michigan Central railroad, and an indefensible court/jury decissions. You can read Reeder's book via intra-library loan from the library in Dallas, Texas.Here I am again three years later, and I'll try to amplify the above. Although the historical review of early beginnings around Hammond, Indiana is informative, the treatment of the train wreck itself and it's aftermath is appalling, especially in view of the Interstate Commerce Commission report and Warren Reeder's book. Both are abundantly clear in showing who was at fault, here, and who bore the responsibility for restitution: The Michigan Central Railroad. They paid a few dollars north of zero, for the horrific loss of life and employability, to say nothing of those killed. To a veteran railroader, Lytle's book reads like a revisionist cover-up of the Michigan Central's callous treatment of the victims. Since the MEC is long defunct, absorbed by the New York Central and then Conrail, this book's content leaves one dumbstruck that a modern writer would write something so, so unnecessary. Just read the recorded comments of Alonzo Sargent, locomotive engineer, Michigan Central.

A tragic story, and a must read for those who loved/love the circus. It is incredibly touching and a book that will hold your interest from beginning to end.

Great review of a forgotten piece of history.

This book was very interesting and well researched. It is about a part of Lake County Indiana history that many people do not have much knowledge about. The author's writing made it very easy to understand what the circus was like at the time of the crash and how, exactly, this crash happened. I learned a lot and enjoyed reading it which is all you can ask for.

I've read a LOT of books about women in business and the issues we face in progressing (or not progressing) in our careers. Susan's book is one of my favorites. It's packed with both theory and practical examples that bring all the issues to life. She's open about her own areas of development - she makes herself vulnerable to her readers by saying, "I'm an expert and I'm still wrestling with some of the issues I write about. We're all works in progress!" I think what I like most about the book is that Susan puts the responsibility for women's advancement clearly at our own doorstep - none of this glass ceiling whining, but rather just practical advice for the things as women we need to do to take charge of our own development. It's a must-read for male leaders as well because it will help understand the female psyche and the issues with which even the most senior and talented women often wrestle. Any man who cares about the development of half the workforce should care about this book. Anxiously awaiting Susan's next masterpiece...

Truly a great read-- for women, young girls, professionals-- for ALL. The framework the book provides is right on and the stories are experience based which allow for immediate action. The authenticity of the book and the way it is written makes it a wonderful experience to learn and do!

Enlightening - Inspiring - Refreshing:This book sheds a crystal clear spotlight on the path forward as women advance our careers towards equanimity and past the audacious 'CLIFF'. Many books on the market today approach this subject armed with an over kill of data, and can become so prescriptive that they don't quite hit the mark towards direct relevance to the individual reader. Susan graciously infuses and leverages a myriad of rich research WHILE also connecting directly to you as the reader, opening your heart in a way that makes you feel validated, heard and not alone with the challenges we face in today's world. Susan also gives us language, to the things that we can't quite put our finger on, that continue to trip us up. While also weaving in powerful stories of REAL corporate women around the globe who have navigated this path and continue to be game changers for other women. It is a must read for sure if you are a women leader looking to continue your career path forward.

This book not only provides the construct of what might be getting in a leaders' way to moving "up the ladder', but also provides insights that allowed me to learn to interact with the world in a way that is relational and developmental. It showed me that I am not alone on this journey to figuring out what might get in my way to success. It showed me the things that I might be dismissing (networking) or even creating my own bias around (over rowing the boat) that has been getting in the way of my own success and that I can do something about it. Most of all, it introduced me to the voice in my head, gave her a name, and allowed me to figure out how to reset and come at life and conversations in a balanced way. Thank you Susan Brady and Linkage for putting this point of view into the market of leadership and specifically women in leadership!

This book was purchased for me, having taken a large step up in my career. I do not typically read business or leadership books but I did find it easy to read, the author was relatable and it was not filled with business jargon or above the understanding of someone not in the business world. I’d recommend this book to other leaders, regardless of their field.
