Really wanted to like this book. My children love dragons and we practice mindfulness in our home. This book encouraged the kids to “wipe away their tears and smile” in order to live in the present. Rather than understanding that kids need to process their feelings and emotions. Mindfulness isn’t about not feeling hard feelings or not crying. I wanted something my kids could relate to. This is not it.

The story was Wonderful,but the book I received had some pages upside & the words got cut off at the bottom of some pages? The first 7pages upside down? At first I wondered if it was on purpose ,but then noticed cut off words. The story is Excellent! The condition the book came...not so much

The dragon books have quickly earned a permanent place on the table next to our rocking chair. Both our kids request reading them each and every night. They love the dragon learning about mindfulness, which has helped them not worry so much with our frequent moving and required life inconsistencies.

The Mindful Dragon is a cute book about how things in life can be out of our control (past) AND we have control over what we do right now. I think it is better for older kids. My four year old really liked it and wanted to read it over and over again but when asked to talk about it, he didn't get the message. (Be totally got the message for the saying no one and the birthday one -kind of for the bullying one). He must have really liked the pictures and I like the message for me (simple words to get the message across).

Great book for kids to learn how to maintain grace under pressure.

My 3 year old son and 5 year old daughter love this book. Simple words without being simplistic about mindfulness. Good reminder for me everytime I read it to them!

Walter Scheidel tackles a very ambitious project here. He attempts nothing less than a one volume account of economic inequality throughout all of human history. In my opinion he succeeds brilliantly.This is a book of impressive scholarship. It is rare that someone is motivated to study this topic without an obvious political and policy agenda. Even after finishing the book I still could not tell you what Professor Scheidel’s political views are. The book is descriptive not prescriptive.The thesis of the book is that, throughout all of human history, only violent cataclysms and plagues have produced significant and long standing reductions in economic inequality. Peace and prosperity always tend to lead to increasing inequality over the long term. With the benefit of hindsight, this is less surprising than it first appears. The overwhelming majority of humans have always lived with little or no economic savings or financial net worth. That is the constant.Peace and prosperity necessarily change the net worth and income of the richest more than the poorest because the economic situation of the poorest just can’t get a lot worse. The effect of compounding earnings is very powerful and not intuitively well understood by most people. This effect is even more dramatic when it spans several generations in a family. Increasing (or at least high and stable) inequality has been the default tendency throughout all of human history.Scheidel cites what he calls the Four Horsemen of economic leveling: mass mobilization warfare, transformative revolution, state collapse and plagues as the only forces that have consistently led to major economic leveling. It is important to note that only mass mobilization warfare has this effect. Ordinary warfare tends to shift fortunes between victor and vanquished without overall leveling.The period of the 20th Century that included the two World Wars and the communist revolutions represented one of the great economic levelings in all of human history. Those of us who grew up just after those events consequently have a somewhat distorted view of what is a typical historical level of economic inequality. Before reading this book I felt that there was something abnormal about he increasing degree of economic inequality we see around us. After reading it I feel like I knew all along this was inevitable. It is a rare book that can change your perspective like that.Scheidel is not arguing that economic inequality is good. He is well aware of the role of plunder and cronyism in contributing to it. He realizes that economic inequality is problematic for a number of reasons including the possibility that it may contain the seeds of the next cataclysm. He is just giving the history here not making any argument about the appropriate policy response.It’s not that the cataclysms that produce leveling don’t also hurt the poor. They always do. It’s just that the rich have a lot more to lose when a lot of people lose everything. Scheidel closes with this: “All of us who prize greater economic equality would do well to remember that with the rarest of exceptions, it was only ever brought forth in sorrow. Be careful what you wish for.”To put it another way, and to put it in the words of Woody Allen, after the next great leveling we may well look back on the previous period of inequality and think “We were happy then but we didn’t know it."

Walter Scheidel, author of The Great Leveler, provides a scientifically rigorous, excruciatingly detailed and politically agnostic survey of wealth inequality from pre-history to the present. The focus is on factors that reduce, or level, that inequality and the core message is disheartening.Given the far-reaching scope, in both time and geography, finding reliable and comparable data related to wealth requires making some assumptions — actually, a LOT of assumptions. But he’s very straightforward about that, explaining each at length including, for example, how burial practices might indicate wealth, how measures of wheat could be stand in for wages and — at least in the modern world — how reported income may not accurately reflect hidden assets.He relies heavily on one metric especially, the Gini coefficient, which attempts to capture wealth inequality in a closed system (say, a country) in which zero represents full wealth and resource equality for all members (everyone has as much as everyone else) and 1 equaling maximum inequality, in which one person possesses all the wealth.It’s a thorough and far-reaching study leading to a disheartening and inescapable conclusion: wealth and resource inequality (which is maximized by the compounding advantages of wealth, access to political influence and the narrowing effects of inheritance) — has always been part of the human experience.In his view, only four things have ever leveled inequality in any significant way — mass mobilization warfare (WWI and WWII, for example), pandemics (the Plague), transformative revolutions (as in, the communist variety) and state collapse.He walks readers through many, many explorations of each of the four examples, studying before and after wealth and resource distribution from countries around the globe and throughout recorded history (and even a bit before).The research brings to life a troubling trend — a gulf of wealth inequality that continually increases, putting the capital and resources into the hands of a small (and shrinking) wealthy elite while extracting them from basically everyone else (especially the working- and lower-classes). Then one of the four levelers unwinds and the rich — who have the most to lose — slip down the social scale and working poor (who suddenly have a resource that’s in demand — their labor) are able to charge more and live more cheaply, and so move up the scale.Then it all starts over again.His research skills are incredible, so perhaps it’s no surprise the writing is solid but never lofty or in the slightest bit lyrical, but still is a punch in the gut.For example: “…in eleven of the twenty-one countries with published top incomes shares, the portion of all income obtained by the “1 percent” rose between 50 percent and more than 100 percent between 1980 and 2010. In 2012, inequality in the United States even set several records: in that year, top 1 percent income shares (both with and without capital gains) and the share of private wealth owned by the richest 0.01 percent of households for the first time exceeded the high water mark of 1929.”In other words, congratulation America, the chasm of inequality is now greater than during the era of the robber barons.The question the book raises, and one he frames specifically, is — given that inequality in the U.S. is at near historic levels (or beyond) — are there any leveling events that could close the gap, even briefly, and are there in ways we could use policy to reduce inequality. The answers, it seems, are no (short of a far-reaching nuclear conflagration, which he deems unlikely), and also no, given the lack of political will needed to redistribute wealth away from the controlling elite (even though there are scads of ways — dozens of which he lists — to at least nibble around the edges without actually leveling).It’s an important work that is, at times, mind-numbingly boring and at times pants-wettingly frightening, and almost always disheartening. Be careful with the audiobook.The book itself is quite good for what it's trying to do. It's a comprehensive summary of all the instances where inequality has changed throughout history, trying to establish the causes of these changes.Because the author wanted to be data-driven, precise and comprehensive, there is a lot of data and not much narrative.This is very well suited for a written book, where you can look at all the data on the pages at once, going back and forth from one data point to another.Unfortunately, it doesn't work for an audiobook. I had to rewind once every minute or two, totalling hundreds or thousands of times I had to rewind. It's also really hard to keep the focus on: when you're walking and hearing "the share of the national income to the top decile went from 17.6% to 15.2% between 1921 and 1933 in Australia, but 19.7% to 14.3% in France", it's pretty easy to zoom out.That would be ok if the audiobook came with a free kindle. Unfortunately, it doesn't. At the steep price of both versions, I don't think it's acceptable to only sell a barely usable one.

I received this book today only to find out that the lettering in some pages washed off like if the printer ran out of ink. The entire book seems like if it was printed at a regular printing machine, i disregarded that detail, just to find out later that page 586 fell out of the book like if it was never attached to it, or glued to it, and i just opened this book for the first time because i received it today! I'm going to return this printed copy of the book and get the hardcover version.

WARNING! Do not buy the paperback version. After five weeks of gentle use--it never left my desk--pages began falling out. Not tearing out, but simply falling out, as if the binding glue had failed. Amazon, to their credit, allowed me to return the paperback copy past the normal 30 day limit. Thank you Amaz-ing-on. Still need the book--hopefully the hardcopy will be more durable.

This is another text book that is actually fun to read. The front contains basic scientific information about plants. Leaf structure and how it is defined, reproduction, flower structure, etc. The body of the book is species of plants and cultivars. There are not any color pictures or photographs. Merely line drawing for individual leaves and flowers. It is arranged in alphabetical order based on Latin name. There is cross reference in the back that has common names.I use this book all the time because I am always trying to identify a species of plant, or a cultivar within a species. Mostly for customers, but also myself. It is also quite helpful in determining what cultivars are likely to do well, and which ones have underperformed in the landscape (in the opinion of the author of course). The author frequently expresses his opinion, and he does so in an entertaining fashion that makes using this book fun. There are lists of what plants are quick references for what plants work well in different soil or moisture condition. What zone plants are suited to. Some indicate air pollution tolerance. There is a wealth of information in this publication.If you are an amateur looking for an easy identification guide, or something with great photos, this is not going to suit your needs. While I usually classify Dr. Dirr's books as additions to the basic gardening library, I have to include this one in the basic book section--one you should have. Most all of us have woody landscape plants and among us the knowledge of how to care for them is mixed. Having been associated with the Master Gardener Volunteer program in three states, I find this book to contain the answers to many relevant questions that presented to the call in volunteers.

excellent reference book. Just keep in mind that Dr. Dirr is coming from a Georgia climate perspective so keep that in mind. The book has all the most common woody landscaping plants.

The book is fantastic...it is extensive, very detailed and precise, the drawings are accurate and lovely. All in all, I'm very pleased with the book and am certain it will be very useful among my reference books.The bad things was that about the last fourth of the pages had a severe crease in them that made it hard to use for a long time. I put it under a large stack of books and used it from that weighted stack with much effort. It has straightened out a great deal, but is still not perfect. I needed it immediately or I would have refused to accept it, and returned it.

This was a "recommended" book for a horticulture class. I'm so glad I bought it. The information is presented in a friendly style, like you're sitting down for a cup of coffee with the author and he's telling you about the interesting plants he has seen and grown. Details of various cultivars make this a valuable reference that I'm sure I'll use frequently.

At first glance this book does not look like much next to the stack of glossy, color gardening books. Spend a half-hour with it and it's value becomes apparent. No photos but that doesn't hurt this book's usefulness at all. The drawings in this book are extremely helpful. I have an "Elm thing" that a relative was positive was an American Elm. I had my doubts since I think it was planted by bird droppings. I opened up the manual and looked at those line drawings and saw the new buds on Siberian Elm are spherical and the ones on American are pointed. The buds on my tree are round. A positive ID.Information on how plants do in California is rather sketchy but there are tidbits in this book you won't find anywhere else.This is no dry treatise: When Dirr gets on the subject of a plant he hates, it makes entertaining reading. Some of his commentary is thought provoking as well.I bought the hardcover. Someone mentioned the thin pages. At 1200 or so pages they need to be to save your back. The cover looks like it can be wiped off with a damp cloth and the binding is sewn, not glued. With reasonable care this book will last a long time.Should be on every gardener's shelf.

Clark Spencer Larsen heads the Department of Anthropology at Ohio State University, Columbus. Is was hoping to read about the camera. Tips, hide features, etc.But, in the most of the book, all you gonna see is tips about photography and videomaker in general.Super frustrated with the book

Breezed thru the book and it appears to be well written -- covers each aspect in easy to understand terms. It seems to cover each aspect of the camera plus a little extra. MUCH better than the information that comes with the camera. I feel its worth buying if you want to make the most of your camera without the hassle of trying ti find everything online.

I consider myself an intermediate GoPro Camera user. But this book has definitely helped me immensely in understanding the basics to advanced settings that the GoPro Hero7 Black has to offer, as well as, taking my video/photography skills up to a whole new level. Although, you can use this book as a standalone, I would recommend reading the manual just to get a basic understanding of the settings. This book will then serve to give you professional camera/video tips and advice.

After watching numerous youtube videos on the Gopro Hero7, I came upon Jordan Hetrick's youtube video on the Hero7. He briefly touched on making macro video which I will be doing when working on my bee hives and putting the same on youtube. I recommend buying this book if you have the Hero7.

I picked this up for a photo shoot I had coming up. I just could not get my head around the new features of my new GoPro so I decided to pick this up. It really has been a godsend. I like the clarity it offers and just the overall easy to follow outline of it. It is also in layman's terms so I don't feel like I am reading a boring instruction manual. I have already learned heaps from it and am absolutely positive I will be referring to this little gem for a long time to come. Mega thanks!!!

Touches on 95% of what I need. If it went in deeper I would have gotten lost. Enough info to go on your own. Too bad the author didn’t use QR to link real videos. Example- warp drive- I got in my car and drove up/ down the main drag in town to see difference in frame rates. A link to video for this and others features would have been great.But as-is well worth the price.

I upgraded from a Hero 3 to Hero 7, so I knew a lot of the basics. This book was still quite helpful in understanding the features of the Hero 7. It includes some recommended settings to start with. Easy read and good reference for future.

This book was very easy to read and understand. It covered all aspects of using the camera from settings for photos and videos to how best to use it in the field. I got a very good understanding of the camera and its use.

Obviously created by a nurse this book is fantastic! As a nurse myself I can certainly related to every page and it brings back many memorable moments in my nursing career. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that nurse on the cover could’ve have shorter skirt ;) So far every book by Day Drinking Press has been top quality, can’t wait to see their next release

I should have read the description better. These are nasty. I purchased to give as gifts to co-workers but they are offensive and have vulgar language. Unfortunately it's too late to return them. I won't give them away as I find the language in them offensive. I will put them in the recycling bin and maybe they will be recycled and come back as something encouraging.

Hilarious! This coloring book is perfect for anyone involved in nursing. All of the jokes are spot on. Give it as a gift to your nursing friends. It will be one they won’t soon forget!

Awesome coloring book. I bought this as a gag gift for the nurses on my unit, but it backfired on me and they all ended up loving it. The entire book waas colored completely after only 1 week and they're already asking for more. Great gift for the nurse in your family or friend group.
