What a great book this is. The lavish photos by Mr. Lord are stunning, but the real deal is all his detailed inside information about Sissinghurst Garden. I assume most gardeners have heard of the place, but for those who haven't, this is widely considered to be the most beautiful garden of its kind in the world. Sissinghurst was created among the ruins of an English Tudor castle by Vita Sackville-West, her husband Harold Nicolson, their kids and gardening staff from the 1930's through the 1960's.The book is organized with one chapter for each garden area or outdoor room. A history of the area is given, with much failure and success along the way. Happily, the story doesn't stop with the passing of the Harold and Vita.The book continues the amazing efforts of Nigel Nicolson and the gardening staff once the property became a public trust in the 1970's. Not only has the original vision been preserved, but in many cases, it's been improved. A private garden originally made for a small family and their circle of friends had to learn to accomodate hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Stunning when you consider that a garden is among the most ephemeral things on earth.Any passionate gardener will identify with the stories. Inspiration abounds for any garden. It is tremendously fun and informative to see the plan drawings and plant lists for each garden area. Not every plant is detailed. That would take many volumes. But a good representative sample is given for each garden area so you feel you really get the full story. The book was published in 1996, so the chronicle ends there. If Mr. Lord's other Sissinghurst book carries the story further, I'll need to pick that one up too.For anyone who wonders how such a miraculous place of beauty can be created, preserved, and carried to even greater heights, this is the book for you.

Often gardening books are mere tours but this one is so full of useful information. I don't expect to recreate Sissinghurst but this book will be a fabulous help in creating a better garden.

Loved seeing and reading about the history of this great estate as we don't have such great gardens anymore. Anyone who can't visit there or who is planing to go will love this book as it gives you a wealth of plants and how to use them in your own garden.

Ok so first I want to say this program truly works but may not work for everyone. Or foe some it will take far longer than for others. The main difference between this program and Rosetta Stone is this: Rosetta Stone works best for those that are visual learners where as this works best for people like me who are audio learners. With Rosetta Stone it will show you several pictures of someone wearing a red shirt, someone playing with a red ball, etc and it's teaching yoj the word for red which is "rojo". Thr problem for me was I ended up focusing on the pictures and not the spanish word or the sound of the Spanish word. Same thing when it's teaching you word for cat (gato). It will show you many pics of cats and I became distracted by the photos and breeds of thr cats rather than just focusing on the sound of the word "gato". Also with Rosetta Stone they jump into basic phrases right away where as this program teaches you every single word BEFORE the phrase. I loved this because then you can speak the phrases all by you self because you know the building blocks of the phrase. Learn in Your Car is truly amazing and like other reviewers I found I was learning spanish without really knowing I was learning it. I do recommend listening in the car without distractions. If you have too many distractions you won't learn it. I tried using the program at work with my headphones and while doing data entry. This didn't work for me because my mind was too focused on thr data entry and the English words I was typing.I could go on and on but I have completed level 1 (all 3 discs) and went to Costa Rica recently. I WAS able to communicate there!!! And when they spoke slowly enough I could almost always understand what they were saying to me. I certainly didn't always respond with the exact right phrasing but I spoke well enough that they knew exactly what I was saying. It was so exciting! If you are dedicated to learning this program will probably work for you. Im even able to roll my R's now where as before I had no idea how to do that!! Oh and thr little booklets that accompany the discs are fantastic to carry around with you at all times for reference.In summary, I've tried different programs including Rosetta Stone and even books and workbooks and Learn in Your Car has worked best for me.Good luck and enjoy the new word that is about to open to you because you will be bilingual!!

The value of what you are getting for the price with this set is incredible. There are 11 total discs including the introduction, 8 lessons discs and 2 bonus discs. It includes 3 books (1 for each level) and a case to carry it all in.The format is good, with English words and phrases followed by a pause then 2 Spanish repetitions each followed by a pause. This gives you a chance to test yourself after the English when you think you've learned and the chance to practice either learning or pronunciation after each of the Spanish.The books are great, because if you learn like me, they have exactly the same lessons in written format so you can follow along or confirm what you have heard in writing. This has cleared up some pronunciation issues for me.My only regret with this set, is that the order of the lessons seems to be geared for someone who needs to learn words and phrases a traveler would need first. There are some basics first and then immediately, on the first disc, the lessons go into transportation, hotel, currency, and many other travel related words and phrases. Because you are also being taught some basics and conjugation of verbs at the same time, you really can't skip these sections and come back to them later, or you will miss some of the basics that will be built upon later. So...long story short, as someone who will not be travelling who wants to learn Spanish to help at work and getting along in society, it has frustrated me that I cannot use a lot of what I am learning so far. I can ask where the bus, train, train station, airport and taxi are. I can ask for a one way ticket, how to get a taxi from the airport, and how to get the train from Madrid to Paris, but I can't yet ask for 2 pounds of chicken at the local Mexican grocery store that I frequent.So...you'll need to be patient. I do like that they alternate a man and woman doing the English and Spanish and then vice versa on the next lesson. This exposes you to different pronunciations and voices and keeps the boredom at bay.I do recommend this set as a starter, but I will also be buying another to see if I can find something better.

Reads like a very well researched and detailed chronology of Bill Lerach’s career rather than a compelling business-insider drama. It’s all there, but hard to separate the wheat from chaff; would be a better book 30% shorter. But I enjoyed it and read every word.

The story of the lawyer Wall Street most feared for more than a decade is a difficult one to tell. The authors have excelled in their digging out of the the facts and then presenting them in a compelling read. Lerach is an awesome figure, literally - one can be in awe of the work he did in recovering billions of dollars from the shady crooks who misused their positions of power, whether in the Keating scandal, the Enron scandal, or the WorldCom scandal, etc.....and one can also be in awe of the way in which he paid scant attention to the law as he amassed his own personal fortune paying off professional plaintiffs to get the job done....and finally, one can be in awe of how little he seems to have accomplished in view of the crash of 2008, in which all the same kinds of immoral thieves repeated the sins of the 80's, 90's and early 00's, albeit this time without even a flawed legal genius to attack them the way Lerach did in the last go-round. Although I think the authors slighted Lerach's deep-seated beliefs in the righteousness of the battles he pursued, and paid too much attention to the money trail alone, this nevertheless led to a compelling read and a much deeper understanding of how difficult it is to make even the slightest dent in the immoral amoral world of reckless cowboy financial wheeler-dealers who rule our economy for now....

This is a compelling read--I couldn't put it down--and tells the remarkable story of Bill Lerach, the major fraud litigator in America for the 30 years between 1975 and 2005. It is dense with details, but it is surprisingly fair, both to Lerach and to the forces which brought him down. From a breakthrough case against the Methodist Church in the 1970s, through the Savings and Loan debacle of the 80s, the dot.com manipulations of the 90s and the colossal Enron and Worldcom collapses of the 00's, Lerach developed a reputation as a no-holds-barred fraud detector. Of course the corporate world thought of him as a despicable bloodsucker and archenemy. And his over-reaching led to his conviction and two years in prison as well as to the end of his legal career. He remains a hero to many, however, who got back some of the money they were robbed of by corporate malfeasance. This book tells the whole story--both sides of it--and tells it well. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. The lawyer is totally three-dimensional, an authentic human being; the story is engaging, in fact, I could not put the book down. Beyond a ripping biography, it is also the story of our times, telling how a decent, well-intentioned person can get somehow caught up in shortcuts that turn out to be illegal and eventually cause his undoing.

If you enjoy well-written non-fiction about interesting characters and their foibles in the business/legal world, certainly add 'Circle of Greed' to your reading list. Bill Lerach's personality, actions and place in history are certainly worthy of a serious book like this one. The authors Cannon and Dillon maintain a compelling narrative flow while relating an enormous volume of impeccably-researched information- some of it arcane- which is no small feat.If, however, you are looking for an excellent business-legal world character study/history book/thriller that is simultaneously a textbook on securities law and class action lawsuits, a precise survey of commute times in the Cleveland metropolitan area and completely devoid of any conventional narrative language, this may not be the book for you.

My son works in this law firm ( after the fall) Its a different place now. This was interesting revelation, but it seems the whole thing started out with good intentions,but gotted derailed by greed.

Excellent read for anyone interested in either the business of mass tort law in the U.S., or in learning the story of a William Lerach, a fascinating character. His rise and fall are extremely well-documented in a thorough yet easy to follow narrative. Highly highly recommended, for both lawyers and non-lawyers.

Fascinating story, well researched, thoughtful, incisive, insightful , well written. Author did his homework and demonstrates a deep understanding of the real world of lawyers and lawsuits.

Tamim Ansary is the author of Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes and West of Kabul, East of New York, among other books. For ten years he wrote a monthly column for Encarta.com, and has published essays and commentary in the San Francisco Chronicle, Salon, Alternet, TomPaine.com, Edutopia, Parade, Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. Born in Afghanistan in 1948, he moved to the U.S. in 1964. He lives in San Francisco, where he is director of the San Francisco Writers Workshop.

This is a pretty good history of modern Afghanistan from an Afghan perspective, which I bought because I only made it through a few pages of a history of Afghanistan written by a non Afghan before I was sick of the cliches. However, even though it does use plenty of citations, it’s written in more of a popular rather than a scholarly style and doesn’t include as much hard detail or go back as far in history as I would have liked. I have mixed feelings on when the author mentioned his own family history, because usually I don’t like it when historians insert themselves into the narrative, but this author came from a prominent family which was involved in or witnessed some historic moments, and the author also has a lot of personal anthropological and sociological knowledge which is interesting. But it still leaves me wanting a standard scholarly style book. Fortunately, the author cites or mentions several Afghan historians who seek to have written major works, so now thanks to this book I will look them up. Overall, I think this is a good history with a valuable perspective but it’s not fully scholarly and usable for citations like some other works are, so it’s not the best as a final history. It’s definitely better, though, than the cliches that many non-Afghans have written about Afghanistan though.

I bought the book for the subject matter-The history of Afghanistan-and quickly realized that the writing and style is perhaps the best history writing I have ever read. Ansary is a natural: his writing is elegant, descriptive, unstuffy, to-the-point, humorous at all the right and unexpected times, and above all succinct and clear. I am impressed with the writing ability of this author. He treats his subject matter with a perfect attention to detail, big picture, the right amount of flavorful stories, and modern political analysis, on top of the cultural and cross-historical contexts he sets up and enlivens so easily and understandably. Obviously, I recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject matter. In fact, I recommend it to any and all history buffs--whatever their "level"--as a prime example of supreme and approachable history writing.

The author writes in a very conversational, story-telling, style. It's an easy read, but difficult for me in another way. As an Army officer in the Vietnam era, it's difficult to read about the mistakes we've repeated, and the people we've tried to help, but harmed, yet again in an admittedly different time and place. I think the author's statement that Afghanistan is a twenty-first century culture overlaying a twelfth century culture is probably his key point. Afghanistan's location is probably always going to make it a place where great powers, of one form or another, will contend for influence. Sadly, Pakistan - another state that isn't a state but a place, created when the British abandoned the area - is increasingly feeling the consequences of its nurturing of the Taliban.It's an engaging read by a knowledgeable author who has lived a good part of the recent history. Sad, but ultimately hopeful. Would that our leaders in the US would read this book and learn from it before we recreate another tragedy both in another place and here, ultimately, at home. The consequences of Vietnam on our own veterans are peaking now, forty years later. I shudder to think of what we'll see in another 30-40 years as consequences of our "wars of convenience" and "wars of consequences".

This is a really quick and enjoyable read of the history of Afghanistan in the last 150 or so years. I was an advisor to the Afghan Army in 2010-2011 and while nothing decisively new is in this book for me it would have been great to have had this perspective then. The author does great job of summarizing the balance of remote and isolated rural village life punctuated by the upheavals of great power politics, military interventions, and disruption of modernity. The greatest divide in Afghan society is not actually that unusual: that between the socially and technologically progressive urban centers and the conservative and traditional rural countryside. I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to understand the cultural and historical underpinnings of our current conflict in Afghanistan. A must read if you are going to go there professionally.

Ansary not only relays historical facts and stories, but guides the reader inside the Afghan psyche.I love his writing style, with it's light touch of humor and transparent even-handedness in discussing controversial aspects of Afghan history. After reading this book I understand why people supported the communist government in the 80's and why others fought against them. I now understand the same thing about the current war.Games without Rules reads like a novel but is well documented and authoritative. The bits of Ansary's personal and family history make it more real. As always, I find Ansary's comments on the current Afghan situation right on target, and his analysis prescient. I look forward to more books by this insightful author.

This book was remarkable in how it unfolded history, culture, and apparent paradoxical values in a simple-to-understand and fun-to-read book. I completely enjoyed it. It helped me make sense of global interests in Afghanistan. It was a great read while I was deployed there
