The one reviewer who gave this atlas one star seems to be stuck on one thing: she doesn't like the grid layout. No one system will be completely convenient for every user, however, and the grid layout is really quite efficient. It's used by Delorme and in every atlas I've ever owned. So far, I've traveled the whole of the Lower Peninsula with this atlas without hassle. In fact, the coloring of the maps is really quite user friendly. I am particularly appreciative of the extras on the maps. Campgrounds and other recreational facilities are really useful. The only negative I would mention is some sloppiness when it comes to accuracy on smaller back roads. Checking the errors against other sources, I found the mistakes are repeated in my Delorme Atlas and on Google maps, so it's hard to fault them too much. Overall, this is a great atlas, well worth the $$.UPDATE (4/14/10): Having used this more extensively, I had to trim a star from my review. The roads are all off in places. When I use the map around places I know well, I find it to be frightfully inaccurate in places. Roads that don't go through are marked as through-ways. Things misspelled, icons not always in the right place. Still useful, but I now bring both this atlas and my Delorme when doing serious exploring.

This is a fantastic map book. It even shows little dirt 2-tracks in the national forest! Love it!

It is true that Universal switched from a county-by-county view to a grid system, but overall I think this is a much much better product. I prefer this atlas over the Delorme atlas and over the Michigan County Map Guide published in 2000 by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. The maps are busy, but they show everything you would want to know, including the public land survey system Township-Range boundaries, section boundaries and numbers, township names, county boundaries, and even zip code boundaries. Universal obviously poured a lot of work into this. I was able to drive diagonally across the state using only back roads and never had to flip around, trying to figure out what page to turn to next. All those sectionline country roads are named, as are parks, airports, and all kinds of points of interest, both expect and unexpected. This book is kind of a hidden treasure, it doesn't seem to be getting much promotion from the publisher or the booksellers.

Apparently Universal Atlas no longer publishes a Michigan County Atlas. When I needed to replace my old Michigan County Atlas, I was surprised to find this atlas is divided into arbitrary grids. For example, if one wants to drive M22 from Frankfurt up to the tip of Lelanau peninsula, you have to flip through three disparate grids, located throughout the book, one of which has the bare tip of the Lelanau peninsula along with the Elk Rapids area on the other side of Grand Traverse Bay. As well, the maps are funky in general as they are cut up to show 1 mile sections, township boundaries, township ranges, zip codes and tons of other useless information, making it difficult to follow roads and natural features like rivers and streams.Most likely someone at Universal Map thought they were making a better product. But it is difficult to imagine that anyone who actually used maps would think this arbitrary grid format and the incomprehensibility of these maps was any kind of improvement. As it is, this atlas is a waste of paper and I am very sorry I purchased it.

On the surface, this seems to be a really neat book. The feel of it is great, the graphics are beautiful, and the idea is unique. The problem (and the reason I gave it 3 stars) is the content associated with each of the 'countries that don't exist'. There isn't much detailed information, and, in fact, the information is in a vignette format, almost like the author is telling a story of someone who lived in the specific country 'that (didn't) exist'. I felt as though I was reading a combined non-fiction / fiction book with the actual information shared about the 'countries that don't exist' feeling like the latter.The other issue I have is that I think that 'countries that don't exist' were left out. I seem to remember a few 'countries' in South Africa (Ciskei, Transkei and Bophuthatswana) that were independent states and were then reintegrated into South Africa. I am wondering if the author just ran out of room, or if these didn't meet the criteria for inclusion. And I also wonder if there are more than this out there?All in all, a good idea. A good book...but it could have been great.

Beautiful. The other reviews criticizing the entries in this book made me wonder if it was good. I think the graphics and format are BEAUTIFUL and the content is challenging even to my geographic expert family members! If you want to know more about the places and the conflicts surrounding their desire for independence and recognition, do your own research.

There are many really excellent stories here, but they're quite short and the authors provide no bibliography or index for those who would like to follow up.

I gave the book as a gift to my grandson, Alex. He loved and proudly took it to school.

Interesting, well written, easy to read

Rather disappointing. The author provides brief vignettes about each place, foregoing the opportunity to say something meaningful about any of them. It does have maps, which is good, but it's otherwise underwhelming. Not worth the money. At least on my Kindle edition of this book, all the type was in italics. Annoying.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. It's a great idea for a book, and the book is nicely done. The maps are good. It's a quick and somewhat amusing read.But it's a mix of not really real countries, call them concepts, and countries that could be very real and may be someday. These fall into several groups. A couple are places that do have a kind of existence, supported by a country for its own reasons such as Abkhazia and Transnistria (Russia) and North Cyprus (Turkey). A few are conceptual, such as the Republic of Lakotah, posited by the Sioux tribes (Lakota, Dekota and other names, "Sioux" being the most common name form outsiders).Then there are places that could be countries, that have culture, traditions, maybe language and have paid a price in the past for desire for independence--Catalonia (in Spain) and Sahrawhi (the former Spanish Morocco, annexed by Morocco and subject to some rebel violence). A few are countries in the sense there is a distinct culture and announcing moves for independence might lead to more attention from government, like Moskitia (of the Miskito people in Nicaragua--not to be confused with Belize).Then there are some that are troublesome and in the near term may see increased violence. Bangsamoro is a Muslim area in the Philippines, on the island of Mindoro and islands nearby, which resisted Spain for centuries, engaged in a gory little war with American troops after the US annexed the Philippines, and West Papua, annexed by Indonesia in 1963, subject to extreme exploitation.It's this odd combination of amusing conceptual countries, places with real separation movements, and places that have been the setting of ectreme violence (Circassia) that make for me, an uneasy combination. As noted maps are good. The brief comments are about the same length for large places and tiny places (Greenland and Mayotte); useful but too brief. The purpose of the book is assort of amusing armchair travel, but as noted the inclusions don't fit together particularly well. They might lead some readers to investigate more and really find out about some of these places .

An Atlas of Countries That Don't Exist A Compendium of Fifty Unrecognized and Largely Unnoticed States, by Nick Middleton (read 16 Jul 2017) This kind of spoofy book will appeal to people interested in geography. I recall when I was in 3rd grade in a room with 4th graders I envied them because one of the subjects they had was geography, which we third graders did not have. This book lists 50 "countries" some of which we all recognize, such as Greenland, Antarctica, Isle of Man, Somaliland, Taiwan,and even maybe Ruthenia. But Pontinha? Even the whiz kids who participate in geography contests would no doubt miss on that one. For good reason: its population is 4. (It is an island near Madeira--we know where that is, right?) And it is not the least populated "country" listed in this book. Akhzivland's population is given as 2. And there is one "country", Minerva, listed with its population given as 0. So no matter how skilled you are in geography, you are bound to learn from this uniquely designed book. (I think I am supposed to tell you that it was given me free in return for a published review, so I do so tell you.)

This is a challenging but rewarding book. When I first took it up it felt like an odd choice - while I was drawn to the idea of the nocturnal it seemed that this book would address no more than an odd little niche in the vast world of art. So wrong, (or at least so shortsighted), but so happily corrected.We start with Whistler, who came along after the vast and majestic western landscapes of the 1830's, and who embraced the nocturne as a form of pure painting unrelated to any representation of the "real" world. From these "tonal" paintings and nightscapes, which might be said to mark the beginning of interest in the nocturnal, the narrative moves on to later paintings, photographs, prints, and even advertising and popular media. What is the appeal of night imagery, and how does it connect with everything from the spread of electric lighting to growing social anxiety?We tend to take nighttime for granted or to ignore it, but for most of history, including American history, night was a palpable force in the routines of life. As daily life changed, as electricity changed the way we lived in and looked at the world, and as modernity transformed the landscapes so beloved by Hudson School painters, the nocturne was a reaction, a veil, a melancholy reminder of a simpler past, and an ambiguous and ambivalent commentary on the unknown future. You can get a little too cute with all of this; by equating nocturnes with "darkness", which can be a metaphor for anything you want, you can pretty much make any arguments and draw any conclusions you care to. I finally concluded that, in addition to the art history,the fact that this book gets you thinking along such lines, and offers you plenty of material to work with and think about, may be its best feature.This all sounds like it could be tedious or too polemical to be entertaining, and sometimes it is, but Valance is generally a knowledgeable, amiable and persuasive guide. Over 150 well chosen and faithfully reproduced drawings and prints illustrate Valance's points. While some connections and themes are fanciful, labored, and unconvincing, (nocturnes being a statement of "social whiteness" because race relations are a matter of light and dark, for example, and all nocturnes are implicitly racial metaphors), the larger discussion of nocturnes is generally thought provoking and skillfully laid before the reader. Insights regarding the switch over time from rural nightscapes to urban nightscapes are especially noteworthy. That said, this book leans more to the academic/scholarly side than to the popular side, which means that there is some heavy footnoting, some insider score settling, occasional esoteric jargon, and other scholarly trappings. Thankfully, that never gets in the way of the larger story and did not prove to be an obstacle to at least this non-academic reader.My bottom line - simply as an interesting art history book this works well. The artworks are well described, well placed, and well linked by the narrative. I finished with a better informed and deeper appreciation of night scenes, moonlit landscapes, nocturnes, and the like. As a social history, the author draws numerous apt and insightful connections between the art and its larger social context that prompt and reward further thought. This is an interesting looking at the portrayal of Night in American Art and the broader social issues. I enjoyed reading the book but I did find it slow going. I read an ecopy of the book and some of the illustrations did not show up well. This book should be read slowly and in a hard copy format. Anyone with an interest in American art and American history at the turn of the century will enjoy this book.
