If you can get a copy of this book and are a survivor of sibling abuse, get it - regardless of the cost. It is time someone recognized this issue as it is certainly different from abuse from a parent/friend/uncle/etc. It gave me the understanding of what happened to me in my childhood and how it affects me as an adult. I feel validated and now motivated and empowered to get help and heal. I've been in therapy for 20 years and feel like I have learned and understood more in reading this book than the 20 years combined. Very thankful for Dr. Wiehe.
pretty much the best book I've read so far on the topic.
I first found out about this important book on sibling abuse at the Uniformed Services Social Work Conference held in Orlando, Florida in November 1991. The author, Dr. Vernon Wiehe, a professor at the University of Kentucky and a prior director of counseling services for Lutheran Social Services in St. Louis, Missouri, presented a workshop which was not only useful to me as a social work professional but touched me on a very personal level having myself been the victim of physical abuse at the hands of my younger brother. I purchased a copy of the first edition of the book, published in 1990, at this same conference.A great deal of research was put into this book written, as the author explains in Chapter 1 An Undetected Problem "with several audiences in mind. Primarily...directed to professionals working in the field of domestic violence and to students preparing to become professionals in that field." He does admit, however, that "although the book is not specifically directed to them for the most part, victims of sibling abuse may be interested in reading this book." Dr. Wiehe was indeed sincere when he hoped that the book "will help victims realize that they are not alone, that the nightmares of their childhood is not their fault." I was not a child when the abuse that happened to me peaked: 28, a Navy veteran, just having gotten out of the service, at the hands of a 26-year-old architecture graduate student brother who gloated after he had beaten me up that he would get away with it. He very confidently maintained that my parents would not believe my version of what happened and instead say that I provoked it (which could not have been further from the truth). He concluded by adding insult to injury stating: "Always remember that I am the POWER in this house and don't you ever forget it." How true that turned out to be! As the author points out in Chapter 3 Emotional Abuse: "Many victims said that their ... abuse continued into their adulthood. The pattern of degradation established in childhood continued, even though they were no longer children. 'Labeling theory' explains that one child in a family may be labeled as a scapegoat or as outside the mystical family circle, and the pattern continues even as the family members move into adulthood." Much like a husband who physically abuses his wife in this case "The perpetrator abuses a sibling as a means to dominate or have power and control."As the author further explains in his introductory chapter "In chapters 2, 3 and 4 the victims tell how they were physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by their siblings, respectively. Chapter 5 describes the parents' reactions to the abuse. Chapter 6 presents a theoretical framework for understanding sibling abuse. The effects of sibling abuse on the victims is the focus of Chapter 7. Chapter 8 indentifies criteria for distinguishing normal interactive behaviors between siblings from abusive behavior. Based on an understanding of why sibling abuse occurs and what distinguishes it from other normal sibling interaction, chapter 9 focuses on strategies for preventing sibling abuse. Chapter 10 describes the research project. A final word to the reader is found in Chapter 11."A number of mental health professionals working in the field of domestic violehce treatment were themselves abused either as children or adults. It is probably no accident then, after we have ourselves survived our own abuse histories, that part of our healing has to do with helping those who may still be in jeopardy. This book has the unique ability of not only educating mental health professionals on this often overlooked form of abuse but also in helping those who have been victims of sibling abuse themselves. I would strongly recommend it.
This book was very helpful to me because there aren't a lot information or stories about sibling abuse. Its almost a mythical problem when talking to people. Sibling abuse is very real. Very damaging.
This book is a compendium of scholarly factual information rendered sensitively by someone who knows the truth about sibling abuse, both assault and incest. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking information about the subject, and especially for those seeking validation of their experiences, which is hard to come by in families affected by abuse or from peers who discount it.
As the survivor of over 15 years of sibling sexual abuse, this book was a godsend. For the first time, sibling incest was legitimized and shown to be just as damaging, if not more so, than parent/child incest. Very supportive and helpful.
