Linda Bloomfield has been involved with pottery since 1973, although her career path led her to train as a materials scientist. She received a BSc in Engineering Science and a PhD in Materials Science from Warwick University, UK. After stints as a visiting scholar at MIT and as researcher in Tsukuba, Japan and London, she set up her current studio in London in 2001. I am a full-time ceramics instructor at a community college. I bought this book, as I often do, to add to my library of materials. The book just arrived today, and flipping through it I instantly realized it is a complete waste of money. The glazes are insipid and common at best- equal or better glazes can be found online for free. Also, many recipes use toxic materials. They rely heavily on barium for the mid-range glazes, which is the temperature I most often use at the college, and I can't believe I actually found LEAD bisilicate in a book published THIS YEAR!!! The introductory instruction is the most basic glazing techniques taught in a beginning level course, and then there is a very brief glaze theory section followed by lots of unappealing, old news recipes. This book is even worse than "The Potter's Book of Glaze Recipes" by Cooper. I would recommend that you spend your money on a more useful book like the Ceramic Arts Series "Cone 5-6 Glazes" instead.

I am presently testing several of these glazes. There are even some interesting raku glazes. Linda

This book is an expensive way to gather a few recipes with multiple pages of slight variations of oxides for color modifications. It includes materials that are not wise choices for a studio potter such as lead frit and barium. Don't waste your money on this book.

This book was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be! Cover to cover it's filled with highly insightful information about glazes! I am thrilled to add this book to my studio collection and will certainly reference it often for recipes, as well as ideas and inspiration! The Handbook of Glaze Recipes is brilliantly designed as a spiral-bound book making it the perfect companion in the studio without the worry of a cracking spine from all of the use it's sure to see.There are numerous other qualities about this book that make it an instant favorite: The book begins with a basic overview of what makes a glaze a glaze, common glaze problems (and their solutions!), popular oxides and their results under different atmospheric environments, and glaze application techniques for a variety of surfaces. All of that helpful information is within the first 25 pages or so, leaving the rest of the book for recipe after recipe! The recipes are divided logically by cone firing temperature making the book very easy to navigate for your particular firing range. Each recipe features a test tile of the glaze next to the glaze formula on a specified clay type giving the reader a clear visual representation of the glaze's surface characteristics, color, and opacity, instead of a wordy description of what the glaze will look like, as many other books have done in the past.The helpful test tile displays next to each formula made selecting recipes a breeze, and within the first hour of owning the book I was mixing up tests for my next firing. Unlike other books that call for a lengthy list of obscure materials most of the recipes in The Handbook of Glaze Recipes are possible to create with a basic material inventory, which I really appreciate because I can use the same materials for several glazes without ending up with leftover materials I'm unlikely to use for anything else. The appendix of the book outlines a UK to US materials conversion chart making this book an equally useful resource in UK and US studios!As another reviewer mentioned there are a few recipes in the book that call for materials I am unlikely to use in my studio, but I appreciate their inclusion in the book nonetheless. Safety and knowledge are the most important tools in the ceramic studio, and I think this is a prime example. A beautiful barium glaze has its place in the ceramic world, and while that may not be on the functional tableware I make, I can still value its exquisitely stony surface, and will simply not make that glaze for my pots. That said, there are hundreds of other glazes in this book that don't call for barium or ingredients you may choose to avoid in your studio. There is such an impressively wide range of glazes in this book!I really enjoyed the direct use of metals and oxides throughout the book as the coloring elements, which is a departure from the commercial stains I generally use. Out of curiosity I made a few of the glazes in the book substituting my commercial stains for the coloring oxides. The results were incredible! What made this especially interesting for me was that by using my stains I was keeping entirely within the palette I've already established for my work, but I was able to create several new surfaces that seamlessly assimilated into my current collection. This book is already one of my favorite new resources and I will be recommending it to every ceramic artists I know! It is definitely a must-have!!!

A nice little starter book for someone like myself who needs a clear and concise introduction to glazes.

The author does not shirk away from exposing unsavory information about Roman society. For example, it is made clear that as a woman, Hypatia was considered property of her father. The silver lining is that Hypatia’s father seemed to successfully twist a draconian system to support progressive ends, where Hypatia was made his protégée. Hypatia’s father worked and taught at the Library of Alexandria.The story culminates with the unconscionable violence that occurred while the Roman government weakened and Theophilus controlled the archdiocese in Alexandria. The violence is not skirted around, but it is tastefully handled and never graphic, making the book quite suitable for a younger audience.As a child, Hypatia meets and befriends Rachel, a Jewish girl close to her own age. Their friendship continues throughout Hypatia’s life, and while never converting to Judaism, Hypatia embraces Rachel’s Jewish heritage and even attends synagogue. Their friendship is what connected me the most to the book on an emotional level. The section where the great Library of Alexandria burns is also an especially well written scene where the reader can could emotionally connect with Hypatia.One area for improvement might be to temper the background information included in the dialogue with more realistic dialogue. For example, when Hypatia is five years old the conversation she has with her father is too advanced for a five year old. Cultural and historical background information may be best presented in other ways. There is also a stray typo here and there, though it did not bother me while reading and did not get in the way of the content or understanding.Hypatia is the latest release in Rockefeller’s Legendary Women of World History series, and loyal readers of the series will appreciate that Hypatia includes a hat tip to Boudicca, the Celtic queen of the Iceni and another heroine in the series.

I love books about important people in the past, and this book fans the flames of my love even more. Hypatia is an amazing woman, she pursued her destiny with great vigor and wisdom. In a time when written documents were so expensive, an oral tradition was essential for the transmission of knowledge. Hypatia gave her life to share and preserve knowledge gathered during her too short time on earth.Laurel has done a phenomenal job of capturing the life and times of religion and politics of this age, I felt like I was learning in Hypatia’s school of philosophy.Even if there was no historical fiction based on the life of a real person, the contents of the Appendix are quite staggering, Laurel has gathered so much information including a timeline, bibliography, and more. If you are a fan of ancient Roman and Greek history this is a must-have volume for your library.I give Hypatia of Alexandria a score of 4.8 stars, the score would have been higher except for the handful of spelling errors I found.

Suitable for upper middle school age readers and older, this interesting introduction to Hypatia will cause the reader to desire to know more.This book quickly takes us from Hypatia's early understanding that her life was not meant for traditional female roles. Taken under her father's tutelage, her quick mind and open acceptance led her to circles where ideas and possibilities were discussed. She did not judge people based on artificial measures. These were violent times and religious intolerance was rampant. Hypatia used her position and connections as best she could. Sadly, she could not save those closest to her.I was fascinated by the astronomical discoveries and the discussion about learning having it's own benefits and rewards.I accepted this book for review. The opinions expressed are my own.

While fiction, the author clearly and concisely provides a credible backdrop to the struggles of a woman who lived in ancient times and fought the restraints and religious tyranny of her period. Laurel Rockefeller demonstrates a high degree of expertise and knowledge of ancient history in her series, The Legendary Women of World History. Whether you are an aficionado of history, or just want to learn more about a remarkable woman, Hypatia of Alexandria is a great read.

This read was over before I knew it and it left me yearning for a time machine as I would love to go back in time and explore that century. This tale quickly pulls you in with strong world building and beautiful characters. Hypatia is very endearing as she is open minded and not quick to judge. There is violence but it is done in a way that won't upset the stomach. About the Author

If you've tried other breathing methods or yoga and found them too complicated or time-consuming, not to worry, the Buteyko Method is so simple that even children can learn it. And they do. In this book you'll learn how to do it yourself, at home. What's here is more than enough to get you started and give you a real foundation in the method. Using the easy-to-follow instructions in the book, in under 3 minutes, I cleared a stuffy nose and went to bed breathing freely and easily for the first time in days. And you do this sitting down, with no pills or sprays or anything. On top of that, by breathing this way, you focus better and your energy stays balanced much longer. For example, I used to feel sleepy after lunch, and would find myself yawning and ready to doze off for a nap. Now I follow the instructions in the book, and in less than 5 minutes, I am rested and ready to go. Another very nice benefit is feeling great upon waking every morning, even after having just six hours of sleep.

The information in this book is very powerful. It is also counterintuitive until you understand Dr. Buteyko's discoveries. For the past 20 years I have worn out three CPAP machines and a dental appliance trying to relieve my diagnosed severe sleep apnea condition. I believe the condition and the CPAP machines caused me to undergo three heart catheter ablation operations for persistant atrial fibrillation. After only three weeks using the information in this book along with some personal consultations with the author I am now breathing normally and free from using dental appliance gizmos and CPAP contraptions while sleeping. It is key, as another reviewer has said, that you do the exercises and follow instructions.

By following the simple instruction in this book I have conquered my congestion issues. I was told I had COPD and given Ventolin as a method of clearing the congestion. I was also told it would only get worse by the medical person I dealt with and the they had no idea what caused the problem. I was inhaling 200 times a month ($63 in drugs) just to breathe. Now I know the REAL REASON for the congestion and have totally handled the problem using the techniques in this book. No drugs for over 3 months now and my lungs are clear. Thank you for making the truth known!

I haven't had asthma since I was 13 yet for the last 13 years (I am now 26) I had this very annoying feeling of not being able to take a deep breath. It stuck with me for a very long time and no matter what I tried it never got away.This feeling was also accompanied with dizziness, tingling lips, digestion problems and cold feet/hands.It brought out alot of frustration and many doctors thought that I was suffering from anxiety since all the other tests were clear.I was subscribed with SSRI and was told to take it regulary to stop my symptoms. I refused, and decided to search the internet for an answer instead.Then I stumbled upon this method and decided to buy the book. I tried doing the exercises and even though it was every hard, the very next day I already felt a relief: I could finally go a whole day without feeling like I need to yawn all the time!I am going to keep doing the exercises and decrease my breathing rate.Thank you for writing this book.

This book and the Buteyko method are fantastic. After decades of battling asthma and chronic sinusitis, they are now almost gone after less than a month with Buteyko. Every person, regardless of age, who has been diagnosed with asthma should check out the Buteyko method. It has made a major, positive difference in my life.

A gem. I was diagnosed with Asthma well into my adulthood and was prescribed steroids, etc. I started breathing the right way and got rid of the inhalers. This year my allergies are gone and I go to the gym or walk hard 3-5 times a week, and I live in a dirty-aired city.

This is a very unique publication containing original texts by Dr. Buteyko. There are also texts by three other medical professionals explaining why and how the Breathing Normalization method works. The book offers step-by-step instructions on how to improve your breathing. To me it was extremely useful. I was able to stop most of my asthma trouble by following recommendations in this book. Anyone who has asthma can benefit enormously by reading this book.
