I read this compendium of the author's top plays cover-to-cover over a week. The memories flew back on those I have seen, and there were deicious tidbits on the shows and performers throughout. I made a list of 17 shows I have never seen but will now search for their revivals. Too bad the author didn't rate 250 as that would have made for a great second week. I did just put his book on Hair on my Christmas list for my wife to "surprise" me with.

This is a very readable and comprehensive coffee table book covering 150 top Broadway productions, with plenty of photos. For the theater fan, it is highly recommended indeed!

I've had, now, three copies of this book. We wore out the first two paper back's and I've finally gotten one in hardback, to read to/with my 5 grandchildren. At one point I looked for more Anansi books and found nothing like this one, sadly. Anansi is a manipulative spider who figures out how to use a bit of magic he discovers to his advantage against an entire village of animals. In the end, a little unassuming bush deer outsmarts him and reverses his manipulation, making things right again.We all have people in our lives like Anansi. The lesson in this book will come in handy one day, and the kids love the patterning and sound effect in the story. This is one of my favorites, which my children loved and now my grandchildren love as well.

My grandson who is not able to read loves this repetitive humorous story, and even acts it out! He is 9 and this story is ageless. A great buy for anyone!

This book includes one of my favorite Anansi tales, and I love how the clever spider is portrayed by the illustrator--as a "real-looking" spider rather than some sort of spider / human hybrid that seems to grace the pages of many children's books. This more "spidery" persona of Anansi makes him appear all the more crafty, sneaky, and greedy--much to the delight of readers.It's brilliant how the animals maintain a taste of realism while also sporting some recognizable human qualities too--like sitting in porch chairs and rocking chairs! This is a refreshing approach, and the illustrations are so fun! A joy to look at! You just have to laugh at a fainting hippo and a dejected lion.The story is well told too. We all wait for Anansi to be outwitted by Little Bush Deer after his reign of trickery and food collecting!Readers who enjoy this book may also enjoy "Anansi and the Magic Stick," which is created by the same author / illustrator pair: Eric A. Kimmel and Janet Stevens. For readers who like an Anansi that is a spider that has a human face, check out Verna Aardema's "Anansi Does the Impossible."This book makes a great addition to the family and / or school library.

I received this book in great condition and it arrived quickly as promised! However, the book itself is only alright. I have another Anansi book, Anansi and the Talking Melon, that I love! It is a fabulous trickster tale. I was hoping to add another great book to my collection. Eric Kimmel fell a little short this time.

This was a favorite book of mine when I was little. I bought it for my five-year-old son and he loves it. He's learning how to read using this book and he gets so excited when it's time for Anansi or the other animals to have "their moment."

If you need a fresh approach to teach main idea, you need this book. Anansi and Little Bush Deer provide language in their interactions that lend themselves to answering the Main Idea questions: Who, Did What, When Where, Why, and How.

Fun story! Children love to do plays about this in Elementary school.

As a beginning rod builder I found a lot of useful information in this book. Some information had been covered in a rod building class I took. But having it as a ready reference is good. Trying to cover the 4 different types of rods did come up short in some areas though. I would have liked to see some specific set ups for the different types in terms of grips, handles and guides. I would recommend this book though to others also starting out

I never did start building rods but learned so much about rods and I'm more knowledgable when it comes to getting one built. This book is perfect. Anyone thinking about custom rod making needs to read this book.

I've lived in Alaska since I was a year old (27 years) and I've been fishing my entire life. This book has kindled a fire in me that makes me want to start building my own rods and has definitely given me more than enough resources to do so. The instructions are clear and concise with pictures to help the reader along. Everything is covered, from selecting a blank, to modulus, to selecting guides and even to decorative thread wrapping to beautify your creation. This book gives more than enough information for the newbie rod builder and appears to have enough advice to help someone that has attempted a few rods of their own. Growing up in Alaska, I've fished spinning rods, bait casting rods, fly rods and deep sea rods but this book covers them all! The most intriguing part to me was the spiral guides technique for locating the guides for a trolling rod...I'm definitely interested in this because I've broken a few very nice/expensive rods fighting fish and I think that this technique may at least give my rods a "fighting" chance. (sorry, had to get a pun in there somewhere). I enthusiastically look forward to putting this new information into practice.

I used this guide as an introduction to building rods a couple years ago.I found it to be well out together and helpful tips that to this day can still be applied to rod building in an ever changing world.

Not everything you need to know, but a nice starter guide, and a nice reference book to have around. Definitely helpful. I used to build rods, but had not done so in about 30 years, so was essentially a beginner again, and this book helped me get back into the swing of it.

It's estimated that since 1970, more than one million children a year have been directly impacted by divorce. Jesse Butterworth is one of those kids. In SIX STRING ROCKETEER, Butterworth candidly shares what it was like to discover that his parents were separating and eventually ending their marriage.Butterworth's book reads like a high school memoir. It's filled with funny stories of growing up as a Christian with all its ironies and rather bizarre spiritual-meets-secular moments. He describes being part of the "God Squad" in school and the struggles and heartache of being a slightly overweight kid with the name Butterworth. (And in case you're wondering, yes, he has already heard all the jokes.) His personal stories are delivered in a humorous, deprecating manner that is both engaging and relatable.He writes, "We were often referred to as the "God Squad" because we were all church kids. But it wasn't our deep love for the unlovely, our hours donated to charity, or our total abandonment to Jesus that set us apart. It was that we didn't cuss. We avoided every forbidden four-letter word by substituting words like frigging and schista and using phrases such as 'What the crap!' Also, if we ever said something negative about a person, we began by saying, 'Bless her heart,' and then followed it up with something like, 'but Janet is truly the most repulsive girl in the whole school.'"Barely crossing 100 pages, the actual allusions to the breakup of his family are late in coming. In many ways, this isn't really a book about divorce --- it's a book about growing up as a Christian kid in a secular world and having your world rocked by an all-too-common reality. The actual moment where Butterworth finds out the gruesome news that his parents are separating doesn't hit until page 57. That's when readers discover his response of shock and grief. For the last half of the book, we learn of his emotional shutdown and recovery. We also learn how the tender gift of his father --- an old guitar --- provided a much-needed path for healing. Throughout, Butterworth acknowledges God and communicates vulnerably without being preachy.Within the chapters, the author adds little pieces of trivia and humor. The book is packed with sidebars and inserts. There's a reference to a babysitter who wouldn't let the kids watch "The Smurfs" and a respelling of a "Pines" neighborhood sign to something far more amusing.There's also a lots of random trivia, like the "Special Secret Mario Message" that reads: "Defeat Koopaling at the end of an Airshop (Worlds 1-7) while wearing either the Frog, Tanooki, or Hammer Brothers suit and receive a special message from the King." While only Super Mario fans will truly appreciate this, it adds color to the text and is a welcome addition for short attention span readers.Throughout the book, Butterworth does a masterful job of keeping off-color humor and references to a G-rating. He hints and alludes without crossing any lines.Overall, SIX STRING ROCKETEER is a refreshing read for today's youth. OK, maybe it's not that funny, but Jesse's humor certainly makes the painful story of a teenager's life in the midst of divorce much easier to read. I could hardly put the book down, and as soon as I did my teenage daughter picked it up and read it in two days! From the perspective of an adult who went through divorce at a young age, this book will help young people understand the complexities of divorce and help them cope.Whether you are a teen going through the upheaval of divorce in your own life, or you have friends whose parents are divorcing, this book is a must read. Since we all have been touched by the effects of divorce, that should put this book on the best sellers list in no time! Having known the Butterworth family many years ago, I found Jesse's insights and sense of humor very much like his father's. After reading it, I passed it along to my daughter-in-law (an adult child of divorce) and to a high school senior in our Christian school whose parents recently separated. Both found it to be very helpful with their individual struggles concerning their broken families. Great job, Jesse!

I loved it, this is a great book not only for youth but for parents to understand the dynamics of their children. I my suggestion don't hesitate. Snap this book up, it is a fantastic resource.

Just received the book and I must say that it reminds me of metaphysics which I believe in the power of the mind. There are some negative reviews from people who just read the introduction which it states "get over it" and because they didn't read any further the message was missed. When you continue to read you will read the true meaning when she says "Beloved get over it" which expresses compassion and healing. It depends on where you are at your journey in life. You may be ready and you may not. I have bought many books that my spirit wasn't ready for at the time. This one however is for me because as you learn with CBT its learned behaviors and how to unlearn some of the pain that travels with you. If your ready get it. If your new get it this is a simple way of understanding how we affect our own lives and our baggage. Great read!

I preordered this book knowing it would be worth the wait and it was. In typical Rick Steves fashion, there is a lot of historical and practical information. As always there are plenty of time and money-saving tips. I particularly like how the ‘best of’ and ‘must sees’ are called out and color or shape coded. It makes finding bucket list ideas easier. There are also some handy single and multi day schedule samples as well. The book describes what there is to see be geographic region, broken into chapters like Western Iceland, Southeast Iceland and so on. Like most of Steves’ books, it caters to families and older travelers in my opinion. But that’s his demographic. While the vast majority of the book focuses on the peak season of the summer months, there are some tips and highlights that cover winter as well (my interest) but not as much as I had hoped for. There’s a lot of value in this book and is pretty much all you need to plan a typical vacation to Iceland. I take a half star off for a couple of reasons. There’s a lot of back and forth page turning, where something is referenced on another page. Not a reason the dislike the book, but somewhat annoying. But more than that, I’m looking for more extreme adventure, such as self-driven off road sites on the famous F roads, or dogsledding tours, and this book doesn’t cover that much. It only references driving rules and encourages buying tours for the off highway stuff. I also wish there had been a color map included as a pullout to take in the car or something. An additional book will be needed for the backcountry or extreme adventure information. But all in all an excellent book. A must-have for your first time in Iceland.

It's great having a new Rick Steves book to supplement the meager Iceland travel book offerings! Before I received it, I read Lonely Planet Iceland which was great. However, Rick Steves definitely delivers with his down-to-earth, "opinionated" travel writing. He doesn't hesitate to tell you what's worthwhile and what's not, which is valuable for a trendy tourist destination like Iceland. He also has different advice than Lonely Planet on the highlights of the country, ranging from which broad regions to prioritize, down to specific sights. You may agree or disagree, but it's great to have another trusted opinion when researching your trip. I also like his description of road trips, including directions, scenic routes, suggested stops, places to eat, etc. The book is organized very well. I suspect this will be the book that earns a place in my suitcase!

We have been a follower of Rick Steves travel but this is not his best.NOT good advise to use Airbnb. Just spent 17 days. Think its better to stay in guest houses with breakfast (unless you have a big group and want to cook in...not my idea of vacation! I also don't agree with getting the small car and no 4x4. Even the "good roads" sometimes are gravel and potholes. We have loved his "off the beaten path" but only one suggestion in this book (Westman Islands) so nothing special. Lastly his travel times from place to place and his length of hiking time are not very accurate. Lastly, the book is hard to follow...jumps around too much.

It is a good overview and provides good information on what to see. But it lacks the in-depth knowledge and analysis that I found in his Italy books. I think he misses or undersells many excellent things to see or do. A drive around Heimaey is one example of one of the amazing things we did that he doesn't really discuss. I also disagree with many of his restaurant recommendations and he needs to provide more options reviews in Reykjavik.He may be more focused on how to see the most things in the least amount of time and more focused on museums over the natural wonders on the island.

This book literally made my trip 1000x better. Rick had one key piece of advice..."use airBNB". I wouldn't have occurred to me, and I never used it before this trip...but Iceland's population is like 90% tourist during the summer and the few hotel rooms are super-over-priced and not worth it (except a few). Rick did a good job of providing prioritized itineraries and so forth. Really helped me to plan a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Iceland. This book was much more helpful than all the other things I could find, because Rick allows for things that are must-see, not-so-must-see, and in between. The writing was well done and it was easy to read, but I could also bring the book out onto the road, with a few bookmarks, and it was handy. Probably the best tourist book I've purchased in recent years...
